No the school was where the undertakers is. The school st the bottom of Crown street was St Oswalds. What was your grans name. I dont know what Hindle and pad was/is. I lived from willows lane walking up Crown street (the houses only started on the left hand side ) half way up.
The fourth house up on the left. Almost opposite Peter street.

St Peter's school was on the land which is now Wolstenholme's funeral directors .

St Oswald's school was next door going down Willows Lane between Brown St and Crown St . The land is now used mainly by M and M Coaches .

St Oswald's had to be closed in the mid 1960s because the building was unsafe .

The two schools are now back as neighbours at the top of Fern Gore .

I think that St Peter's Institute was a building mainly fronting Richmond Street, but also at the corner of Higher Antley Street. It was on the left hand side facing up Richmond Street.

I never heard of Hindle and Paddbury on Crown Street. The only yard down Crown street was Jim Bullcocks scrap yard with the entrance at the bottom of Crown Street near Willows lane. Jim's house was on Paxton st ( I think). The only Taylor round that area was my best mate Malcolm Taylor and he lived just round the corner in Ranger Street opposite Michael Ellwood. Mikes dad was a piano tuner. There was a chip shop by Crown Street and Ranger Street in the late 50s and there was little Jacks grocer shop on the corner of Crown Street and i think it was Maden Street. ( I think Paul Cavanagh lived up there). I think Cashy knew some of the young gals around my area as well.

And Len never went beyond fish , chips , peas and steak puddings .

Like you say , the best for miles .

In the 1970s , when his wife had died I used to see him in the Stop and Rest . He used to bring a few fish wrapped up for some of his fans .

When my dad used to work at Bulloughs , he often took sandwiches made from a fish from the chippy for his bait . A delicacy I have inherited from him . ;)

No Lens was at the top end of Ranger street. This was a little house come chip shop. The very last house on Crown street on the left hand side going up from Willows Lane before Ranger street. Think it was next door to either the Gillfoyles or the Bartholomews, Didn't last for long they couldn't compete with Len. Mind you they were crap.

I was in the same class as Tony at St Oswald's Infants . Then I would see him after that when we were both altar servers at the Sacred Heart church .

The last I heard of him was from his dad whom I saw in the Willow Mount in the early 1970s .

If I remember rightly , Tony had joined the army . That's about all I know .

Len's chippie was on the corner of Ranger Street and Eden Street, opposite the side of St Peter's School. Definitely, best chippie ever, anywhere.

St Peter's Institute was on the corner of Richmond Street and Higher Antley Street. Used to go to the youth club there around '63/'64.

My Grandma lived at 57 Ranger St. Len's chippy was on the corner of Eden Street and Ranger St, across the road was St. Peter's school, I used to go there on Sundays after Church. I have a photo of me and my brother on one of the church processions standing on the slope going into the school.

Wasn't that also the Mothers Union Club? I think my grandma used to go there when I was little.
Is St.Peters Church still being used as a Church? lol

The Institute was used for all the various societies and groups from St Peter's Church - the Mothers' Union, the Mens' Fellowship, the youth club etc. Not been up that way for a long time, so no idea whether or not it's still being used as a church.

Yes St. Peter's church is still up and running .

The priest , who was ordained about 6 months ago , lives in the vicarage now on Park Crescent , just before Bullough Park .

Glad to hear the old place is still going strong, Colin. I was an altar boy there about a million years ago. ;)

Wyn , you can probably remember a priest who was at St. Peter's a million years ago .

I can picture him walking down Willows Lane to the school in his cassock and wearing a biretta . More Catholic than the Pope . ;)

I pass it sometimes on my way up from town . I see Peter Crook , I think that's his name , going into the church . He used to live in Willows Lane near the top of Ormerod Street . When I was living up Fern Gore I would often have to go down the lane to Ingham's butchers and Whittaker's confectioner's . Peter's mum would be outside their front camping . Come back in two hours , and she would still be there camping . :)

Days when people had time and were not caught up in the frenzied rush of our 21st century life .

Peter is a member on here, He was at St Peters with me. Lets hope he responds. Last time I saw Peter was about 20 year ago in the Royal on Blackburn Rd.

Yep, I still see Peter up the Stanley from time to time. The priest you remember was probably Eric Franklin who was there in the late 50's/early 60's. St Peter's always was High Church back in the day (or "smells and bells" as some folk like to put it!).

Re: old st peters school crown street

I am sorry to be so late at joining this thread but on my school report, when I was in Miss Briggs class, it stated "Peter's work is satisfactory but he does tend to be slow". Anyway to answer a few of the queries St. Peter's Church is still open for worship however the rear half of the church is leased of to SureStart to be used as a nursery; I think that the priest you used to see going down to school in cassock and biretta could possibly have been Glynn Jackson as Eric Franklin didn't tend to go out with his biretta on; the Institute was sold off many years ago to an Asian group called HUDA although it seems to used as family house now.Terry Murnane who was a assistant Curate at St. Peter's got the position as vicar of St. Thomas', Musberry and St. James, Haslingden but sadly died after being there only a short time.

it was Len's chip shop and it was on Eden Street across from the old St. Peters School, I used to go to Sunday School there in the 50s. my gran used to live across the street from Len's on Ranger Street, it has since been pulled down.

The Institute was used by the Mother's Union for its meetings and they used to hold afternoon teas there, upstairs there was 1 full size snooker table and one three quater size snooker table.
Yes Len's chip shop was at the corner of Ranger Street and Eden Street and at the top of that row Lena Whittaker had the grocer's shop and as you say all demolished now.
