Alex Higgins
did any see the morning programme today with alex in it?
he looked so frail and dainty, i was really shocked, he is not the man he used to be, he's only 58! but it wasnt until i heard that he had throat cancer in 98 and it nearly killed him!:( must have been all the booze and fags he had that had caught up with him! not to mention the temper he had and the women! but he was a good player and was enjoyable to watch even though snooker can be v.boring! what i can remember anyhow!http://www.itv-thismorning.co.uk/Ima...cle/1/2308.jpg |
Re: Alex Higgins
Another sad case of someone who was brilliant at his game, but succumbed to the drink & women which eventually saw his fall from grace(a la Best,Gasgoine & Flintoff,if he's not careful).Every interview i saw with Higgins he always seemed off his face, though he played brilliantly.I believe he played a few times around these parts & could be a bit of a pig if he desired.Ah well, how the mighty have fallen.

Re: Alex Higgins
Played him a few times up the Elite, well not really, I just fagged the balls out for him. In his prime he was brilliant, seen him make 147 without thinking. But, unfortunately he had no class. Still, sad to see him like that today.

Like him or loath him, that picture shows the ravishes of illness, saw him on TV not to long ago but he has worsened big time since then |
Re: Alex Higgins
I saw him win The World Championship at the Selly Oak British Legion in 1972 against John Spencer, Higgins was brilliant but not half as nice a chap as Spencer
|
Re: Alex Higgins
Not nice to see anyone like that, even if he was n arsehole.

Re: Alex Higgins
:eek::eek: hell fire! He looks very ill and old. He was brilliant in his time. I used to love watching him whizz round the table.
I always remember him sniffing, twitching and rushing. Was he on something besides booze? |

Re: Alex Higgins
He used to back his horses with my dad when my dad worked for Bradlows betting shops. He gave my dad a record player with his name signed in the back. I played many a record on that when I was young:D

Yes he worked there and at a few others, he was a manager. I'm going back a lot of years lol
He was called John Oldham |
Re: Alex Higgins
Time to bring the thread back up.
He died today. |
Re: Alex Higgins
Sorry to hear that, he certainly livened up the snooker world in his prime. Probably the most exciting player of his day.

Re: Alex Higgins

Re: Alex Higgins
I met Alex a few times many moons ago, playing down at Elite!...In fact i played him in practise a couple of times...i paid of course...and i lost of course...as most people did!....One of the top 5 or 6 snooker players of all time!...Yes he was a Total Prat at times...and at some times, much worse than that, but he was truelly Mercurial around a snooker table..he had charisma and a touch of magic about him, and he brought snooker to a much wider audience than it ever had been before! He will always be talked about as long as snooker is played!...He could almost hold his own with Ollie Reed too!....RIP wee Man!!

Re: Alex Higgins
The last time I saw him was around 1989 had a frame of snooker with him in Ossy Con one Saturday Lunchtime, he called in with Denis Broderick who was his first manager when he first came over from Ireland, he had a flat over a shop on Catlow Hall Street for a time R I P Alex

Re: Alex Higgins
Just about the time everything went 'downhill' Alex lived in Holcolmbe brook, used to play pool in the local pubs, a pound a game, winner stayed on the table for the next game and the challenger paid, he didnt spend much time watching, and was always keen to get the game done and start the next, even at a pound a time, he made some money out of it. RIP Alex Higgins.

Having been on Hols, i've only just had chance to watch the programme they did the other week about Alex. Was good to see some clips there of him playing in the old Elite Club!
