Grand Slam Tennis 2012

The season has started with The Australian Open and so far I've only managed to watch one full match. A great one though : Nadal vs Berdych. Nadal rallied at a crucial tie-break point in the second set and managed to make it one set all and then fought tooth and nail till the end winning with great merit over a Berdych who was playing at his best.

Nadal now goes into the Semi-final against Federer, which promises to be spectacular as they are both playing well. The Fed. winning easily over Del Potro.

Djokovic tomorrow against Ferrer should be worth watching and in the early hours Andy Murray against a lesser known Japanese player who beat Tsonga. Murray hasn't really been tested so far but should make it through to the semi-final. So it should be the top four in the first Grand Slam semis.

I have a feeling that it's going to be a good year for Murray, don't ask me why! Since my all-time hero John McEnroe, he's the player I find to be most creative and brilliant in his shots when at his best. I'm hoping that new coach Lendl can give him the mental strength to bring out his best tennis when it counts most. He'll need it to beat the likes of "Gladiator" Nadal, "Cool" Federer and the crushing tennis of Djokovic.

My money is already on him for Wimbledon this year.:)

Fair! You are giving me rather short odds there Cashy -Ladbrokes gives him 7/1 today -that may change depending on the Oz Open result;):D

Think its time they clamped down on these silly women grunters playing tennis, not as I watch much tennis but the thought of even tuning into a woman's match knowing they are up and down the court impersonating a pig for an hour and half really turns me off the idea

Can't remember the last women's match I watched either Jay -for the same reason.

Apart from the noise, the men are more pleasing to the eye too!

Joking aside, watched some great tennis earlier, Fed. vs Nadal. Nadal deserved to get through to the final on sheer determination. Some fab rallies in the fourth set, would have been happy whichever of them won.

Will (hopefully) be able to watch all the Murray/Djok. match tomorrow morning - been building up a nice pile of ironing to do while it's on, so no-one can accuse me of not doing anything useful! ;):D

A fiver bet it is then if that's OK by you Cashy.

Think it must be some form of Déjà-vù connected to the Royal jubilee which is giving me this feeling about Murray winning- am sure her Maj. would love to give him the winning trophy as she did back in 1977 to "Ginny" Wade -the last "Brit" to win a major title.

(Am not counting Murray's brother who won the mixed doubles a few years ago - bet that really annoys Andy!):D

I didn't mind watch the odd ladies singles match when the likes of Anna were playing, but the grunting by these ladies should be confined to the bedroom me thinks:D:)

Jay, not to put too fine a point on the fact. As a modern, relatively young and dynamic female, who appreciates tennis. Bashing balls about the way they do these days, is best left to the TV commentary of Wimbledon and not to real life and us average mortals! (Unfortunately!!!):D

Waited to post on today's match so i wouldn't be too emotional:o:rolleyes:

I really enjoyed today's match and loved the "new" Andy, reminded me of a young Charlton Heston. Was so disappointed he lost but it didn't matter as he had shown the right attitude and had fought to the end.

Not in the old Henman "well let's put up a fight but you all know i'm going to lose in the end anyway 'cos I'm a good sport" sort of way, but convinced.

Don't forget, before you criticise certain parts of the match, that he was playing against the world No 1 who won nearly all last years major tournaments. It really could have gone either way and i think he can take heart from the way the new Lendl match plan worked - aggressive and going for his shots from start to finish, even if they didn't always come off and occasionally he was really unlucky, there were some fabulous rallies and it may end up being the best match at the Oz Open this year.

Will have to see how the final is first!

I am even more sure now that he'll do it this year and win Wimbledon!:alright:

(The bet's still on Cashy!)

Now Jay, don't knock my hero -I have a very soft spot for Andy as he looks very like my eldest son. My son of course is more handsome;) but no-where near as good at playing tennis.

Oh, don't forget he is 4th in the world -not that bad.:D

He's alright when he's winning, he's just useless when he loses, our Andy made the mistake of saying he hoped England got beat in the world cup, then tried to back track, lying scotch git :D

Thinking like that is why he will never win a grand slam he didnt beleive that he could go on and put djokivic (i think thats it) to the sword when he was 2 - 1 up , do you think nadal would have let that position slip i think not.

The 4th set was a bit of a shambles as he'd spent so much energy in winning the third -it all happened too fast for him to realise. There is a big psychological element in Tennis too don't forget and they both had a lot of ups and downs in the match.

Nadal is the tennis equivalent of a Pitbull -a real gladiator, but he loses sometimes too! As for "Spokovic" - he comes across as a nice guy but i don't like those who just stay on the base-line -give me a bit of serve and volley every time. Bring back McEnroe!!!:D

On a different subject, I must say i preferred it when maurray was sponsored by Fred Perry -he was much more elegant on court and always in white. Wasn't keen on the Adidas Orange and blue ensemble.

Winner for elegance and style is Federer every time - if it weren't for his nose he'd be perfect!:D

Top and bottom of it is murray i think is a chocker , whenever it matters he bottles it. Sorry dianne but i think murray will never win a slam because of that flaw in his psychological make up.

I hope you are wrong Dave, this was his first outing playing with a new style which coach Ivan lendl is teaching him - a new game plan of aggressive "go for it" tennis which is what he played throughout - it just needs a little perfecting.:)

Can think of worse things to endure, Jay :D

I'm glued to the telly when Wimbledon is on I'm afraid - not the women's game but i like some of the doubles matches too.

Have been following it since forever - though I do remember missing the final when Arthur Ashe won- back in god know's whenever (sometime in the 70's) as mum had decided we'd have a day out at Howarth, doing the Bronte tour. I remember sitting in a café having afternoon tea and hearing it on the radio...

I even had Top Trumps Tennis player cards at Junior school - friend Charlotte had them too but no-else! One of the best cards was the Italian Adriano Panatta and another was Vitas Gerulaitis...!

Doesn't make any difference to me, don't get Eggheads - my mum watches that every day, so i've seen it out in "Tenegrief" when i stay with them, it's not a bad quiz-show.

I watch Wimbledon on SKY sports -the best thing is I can knock off the commentary and just watch the tennis and hear the noise from the court.:)

Wouldn't mind the Beeb commentary with McEnroe but you don't get it on SKY unfortunately.

Switch on the TV Cashy and get watching - Nadal has a really gritty personality -don't think he's going to take losing the last 2 sets lieing down!

Still haven't worked out how Djokovic managed to win:confused: - Nadal was incredible too!

French Open, next Grand Slam - a bit of a wait. Quite a different tournament, different surface and atmosphere - the Aussies are a noisy lot of tennis supporters! The favourite on clay has to be Nadal.

Hope Murray keeps practising his new approach and does well there too. Can't wait to see him in the Wimbledon Final;):D

Despite pulling a muscle Murray has managed to get through to the semi-final in the Miami masters tournament - came back from a set and a break down. Great start to the year so far.

Will be playing next against either Tsonga or Nadal.

Excuse me but has anyone got any paint they'd like me to keep an eye on while it dries? Switched on BBC2 at 9pm hoping to watch The men who make us fat, a documentary. However, because Wimbledon is still going, it isn't there.

Could someone please enlighten me as to how people can get so excited about two people hitting a ball at each other? It's always baffled me. This event receives blanket coverage during the day on both BBC1 and 2 and in the evening it has been on BBC2 since six o'clock. The football is small fry by comparison, and much more interesting and entertaining. :idunno:

Rant over, but if they cancel Mock the Week at 10pm I shall really get annoyed. Meanwhile I'll try to stifle my yawns otherwise you might hear them in Accy. :sleep8:

I love Wimbledon and tennis in general Sue -it's an amazing battle of skill and nerves in the singles matches and the doubes matches are quick and entertaining. Even if i don't watch every match -it's on in the background to keep me company - no commentary -just the noise from the court. Sky interactive is great -you can choose between 6 matches!
Had meant to re-open this thread myself to let Cashy know that a five-pound note is on the dresser in the dining room with his name written on it in pencil (superstitious!)-this is for our bet which we took on at the beginning of this year!
Having seen Murray's first two matches I still say he will win it this year...he finished off Davydenko easily 6-1,6-1-6-4 and then yesterday beat the Croatian giant Karlovich, 7-5,7-6,6-7,6-4 in quite a tricky match. He's looking mentally strong and was playing all his shots. Let'shope he can keep it up and improve through the tournament. C'mon Andy!:D

Can't understand why the BBC have to cancel programs at all, they have two digital channels, which are obtainable on freeview too, which are not used during the day, they only come on air at 7pm each evening, what a wast of licence payers money. Can they not get it through their thick heads that nowhere near everybody in this country want to watch people hitting a little yellow ball over a net for 3 or 4 hours at a time, its a load of crap, dreading the Olympics, think it will be a fortnight on the Discovery Channel for me

Just finished watching yesterday's Nadal match -had deliberately avoided hearing the score. Was really surprised he lost, this player Rosol is a new one for me, played an exceptional match let's hope it was a fluke- but for Murray that's the really big one off his side of the draw -so good news for him I think!

Looking forward to his next match against Baghdatis!:)

Well, guys, back to the ball game in question!

Windy today on Center court, Serena Williams made it through somehow and showed her fuschia pink shorts off rather a lot when her skirt was blowing in the wind. I do believe she has the largest backside of the tournament!

Sadly Nadal is out, among the men he has one of the cutest "derriéres" - Federer is still in -he's not bad either, lovely in close fitting white shorts!!:D

Watching the Murray match right now -he's making heavy weather of it for some reason against Baghdatis...C'mon Andy!!!!!!:p

No mention of Murray's derriere, m! Why does he always remind me of that gawky teenager in Gregory's Girl?

I was intrigued to hear that there is an 11pm curfew on matches at Wimbledon "so they don't disturb the neighbours".

They take over the neighbourhood for a fortnight, allow thousands of people to trample everywhere and yell and grunt at the top of their voices, parking their cars everywhere and making the local residents prisoners in their own homes......then start worrying about disturbing the neighbours.

Interesting logic!

Would be a bit incestuous to look at Murray's rear view -my eldest son is very similar to him and the same age!

I do think that Murray has a strong look of a young Charlton Heston at times. (See photos -couldn't find one of him with a tennis racquet!);)

I get what you mean about the actor in Gregory's Girl -but Murray has worked hard on his fitness over the last few years -can't really call him gawky these days.

As you say the curfew thing is odd - perhaps they had complaints from the local residents!

He hasn't got an easy draw - Marin Cilic on Monday and then the winner of Ferrer vs Del Potro.

Let's hope yesterday's poor performance will be a wake up call and he'll take his game to a higher level between now and then.:alright:

Rafa is only 10 months older than Murray.

They definitely have to do something about the 11pm curfew. Imagine if that had been the men's final? Millions of people would be perched on the edge of their seats around the world (including most of the residents of SW19 as well).

A World Class tournament deserves to run its course! And if that means financial compensation to the neighbours, then that is a comparatively small price to pay.

The curfew thing is not odd at all, it's simple politeness and respect for others. It's not to do with the noise from the court but the noise of hundreds of people banging car doors, revving engines and driving away. Or so I was informed by the commentators who were desperately trying to find things to talk about on Thursday when I was forced to watch Wimbledon while waiting for my postponed programme which never appeared.

Exactly -it's only once a year for 2 weeks anyway. As you say most of the locals will probably be watching it too!

The longest ever final was 2009 -Federer -Roddick -brilliant stuff, didn't miss a minute -would probably have been interupted with this new rule.

The 2008 Nadal - Federer final lasted nearly 5 hours too (I watched it all!), it was a thrilling match and being interupted by rain would also have gone past the curfew if it had been in place.

Murray vs Cilic today - will be a tough match -looking forward to it. C'mon Andy!:hothothot:D:hothothot

We're expecting thunderstorms in theory but it ain't happening! It's very oppressive about 38°C -am inside with the shutters closed to keep out the heat -we are praying for some rain!

Not likely to meet him as they re on different sides of the draw -unless Federer beats Djokovich which is possible but unlikely. Federer has some back problems apparently.

Roofs on on Center court tday -don't know if Murray will manage to finish his match today. He'll be playing either Del Potro or Ferrer -the match just about to start on Center court...at least he'll know who he'll be up against if he can finish Cilic off. Was serving and moving really well on court yesterday I thought.

Thanks Susie - much apprecated as i know you are a tennis hater!

Caught a repeat of the match on SKY a bit later- good win.

Very difficult match next round against Ferrer -he has lost the last two matches against him - psychologically possibly more important than a "final" ?!

Glad to see I'm not the only tennis fan on Accyweb. Just have to hope the weather allows us to see some good games for the rest of the week:)

By no means Cashy -it was a fantastic win against a great player.

3 sets to 1 is not "skin of the teeth"! Mentally showed great strength - he had lost the last time the two of them met and although seeded 7 at Wimbledon Ferrer is No 5 in the world.

I am just coming back down to earth again - some fantastic tennis was played by both.

48 hrs to the semi-finals. Should be two great matches.

Just before the last point -husband, who hates Murray said :"Mangio un gatto (Pardon my Italian!) which is the equivalent to = I'll eat my hat (although in Italian they say cat!) If he is a true champion at this point he'll go out on an ace like Lendl used to. If he does he'll win Wimbedon this year!"

He did just that - fingers crossed! Though I can't decide which of my cats to sacrifice!:D
