Olympics have officially Begun - But...

Still 2 days to go to the opening ceremony!

Did you know that the Olympics have officially begun?

Yep today it started with Women's football and GreatBritain beat New Zealand 1 - 0.

But isn't it a bit odd starting some games before holding opening ceremony - don't you think that's a big odd.

I reckon they should have had an opening Ceremony and that day been a day off for every body. :)

It's bad enough here Friday nights as it is without having to endure Friday morning as well. Living near the parish church we get bellringing practice from 8pm every Friday.

This will be not just church bells, but door bells, cycle bells, hand bells too.
The 'artist' who thought that one up needs torturing with a week of heavy metal music.

Cashy dear - it is a nationwide event - so all the god botherers will be clanging anything that makes a metallic sound.

Perhaps our PC brigade have got in touch with that poor little Chinese lass that was deemed too ugly to open their games and promised that they will let her appear?

(The press will be allowed photographs but only from the back).

Work No. 1197: “All the bells in a country rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes” presents a truly celebratory work for the Games. It was commissioned by the London 2012 Festival as a ground-breaking new work. When it is performed, people all across the UK will be caught within its rich tapestry of sound. No two people’s experiences of Work No. 1197 will be the same, making it both a personal and a communal celebration.

Any Bell. Anyone. Anywhere.

And if you win the competition on the website you get an inflatable Stonehenge for a day!

History In The Making | An Inflatable Stonehenge on Tour by Jeremy Deller

Very well named... truly is a sacrilege in the name of art - I despair for the future of culture in this country sometimes.

Personally I love the sound of bells -something timeless about them, but then i don't live under or near a Campanile!

As to the Olympics -ended up watching part of the Brazil match but my men do not rate women's footie and soon turned over (thankfully!) Am looking forward to seeing the opening ceremony -who will be lighting the final flame?

Saw that the first Faux-pas has been made though -a mix-up between the North and South Korean flags! Not a good start, I wonder who was to blame...

Actually I like bells abroad - just not English change ringing which just goes on... and on... and on... When we lived in Warwick again we were right by the parish church - it was at the bottom of our garden - and they were mad on bell ringing, plus the tower had a carillon which used to play tunes every three hours.

No one knows who will light the final flame - it is a secret till it happens.

BTW Dianne who is that in your new avatar?

It seems to be the fault of a guy that's been claiming the dole since 1948 trying to get the sack, he always said he was an Olympic flag salesman, This year the Manager at his employment Exchange said there was no excuse for him not to be working.

I just stumbled across the Torch run in London, first came a bus promoting Coca Cola then a bus promoting Samsung computers, full of tanned and blonde 20 somethings shouting slogans about the "Olympics being great!" - then groups of acrobats and performers then a 4 min gap - then 2 minibuses of Police in track suits - then Police on motorbikes then finally the torch carried by an athlete surrounded by other athletes followed by another minibus of track-suited police and then a load of cyclists!

I have been past the Olympic Park twice today and it does look an exciting place to be.Everything looks colourful, the different venues, the flags, even spotted a couple of red telephone boxes with people queuing.
There is a lot of corporate advertising about, some of it is strategic,i.e. hiding unsightly buildings. BMW cars with Olympic decals are everywhere, not just in the designated lanes.
The sunshine and blue sky today made the whole venue look like it could be a success,I might have caught Olympic Fever today..

You need to disappear to a desert Island somewhere for the next 3 weeks, complete isolation with no contact to the outside world, that should help cure you.

Problem is the isolation bit, because there's quite a few others who'd happily join you. :D

RIK CLAY 2012 OLYMPICS part 1 - YouTube

The area where the Olympic is now was a very barren industrial area prior to being taken over for the Olympics, there used to be a lot of raves held in the area and I just found this out from Wikipedia...

The site covers parts of Stratford, Bow, Leyton and Homerton in East London, overlooking the A12 road. The Royal Mail has given the park and Stratford City the postcode E20, which was previously only used by the television soap opera EastEnders for the fictional suburb of Walford.

I think it is time that countries stopped trying to out do each other with these spectaculars costing millions of pounds and went back to what the Games should be all about = sport. We have heard far more about the ceremonies than about the actual games so far.

To many people, sport in all its aspects is a large part of their lives, whether as competitor, coach, spectator or whatever. It gives a focus and purpose and can help folks turn their lives around. It also contributes to the health of he nation's inhabitants and provides employment for many.

As in many other aspects of modern lives, big business and money have become involved, leading to telephone number salaries for footballers and other downsides.

We should not forget however that for what I hope is the majority of participants in these games, this will be the highlight of their lives, whether they win or lose. They will just be happy to have been there.

We are all looking forward to seeing it here -just hope it won't be naff as the only Brit present.

I do like fireworks so i hope they are good.

I imagine that for most of the athletes who don't stand a chance in hell of winning, that just taking part is the pinnacle of their career. I enjoy quite a lot of sports and can see the skill in most of them - but to be honest some of the best sports events I've ever watched were when my son was playing football as a little one and was goalkeeper for Scalenghe FC near Turin -great fun and you can't beat cheering someone you know on!

(Hated having to wash the kit and clean the boots though!:D)

Why is it so long - 3 hours + also It would have been better if they had it in the afternoon then started the events directly afterwards wouldn't it?

Yes it would, or even better do away with this trash, it will only become more & more expensive for each Country wanting to be the host, I don't think that is the meaning at the heart of the Olympic games.

Exactly, way back in the mists of time it was based around military skills & who could kick whose arse. Standing armies & bloody battles were a bit pricey & costly in bods, so they sort of agreed to sending several of their best arse kickers along every 4 years to do the proverbial kicking & just remind each other who exactly was the Doggies danglies in said kicking. :D

Now if they reverted back to that sort of performance I might well be interested. ;)

I have declared my house an olympic free zone - but it's very difficult to escape from when you turn the telly on - the thought of the next few weeks makes a little rainy cloud appear over my head!
I appreciate the dedication, skill and talent of our athletes even though I'm not at all interested, but I suppose that's my problem and I do wish them every success.

My point exactly Less.

Been watching for 40 minutes, haven't stopped cringeing yet. Now got the NHS bit, nurses rock and rolling, dressed in frilly frocks, pinnies and hats. Don't they know what a real nurse looks like these days?

Kes, they do it at night so they can get lighting effects when it's dark, also presumably to attract the crowds who wouldn't come during the day. And they have been having events all day already.

Oh god now it's Harry Potter. Pass the sick bag! All truly incomprehensible.

Not really watching Cashy, more listening with it on in the background. It is truly dreadful, they haven't shown the Queen, presumably she isn't looking very happy. They had a young lad singing Jerusalem, he was good, now someone's singing Abide with me -flat as a pancake.

Would probably have watched Poirot instead if I hadn't seen them all umpteen times (got the boxed set).

It was OK for about 1 hour then I started thinking what's this got to do with Sport really? I suppose it's about selling the history of the country.

We've already had some Men's and Women's football and archery before the ceremony. They should have had a national day off or something for the opening day ceremony and then start the sport.

That James Bond (pouting Daniel Graig) bit was a bit stupid - of course it wasn't the Queen jumping out the helicopter and I bet Graig didn't even jump out insurance too high!

I meant the telly one, remember as a kid on Holidays at Stalag Butlins or some such in the 70's, the Telly scoffed the ackers like no ones business. (and being as it was probably a rainy & windswept North Walesian location, there wasn't a lot else to do.......try it nowadays & social services would be impounding your Kids ............. hhhmmmm, now there's a thought ;))

I was getting a running commentary on an international forum I use :D

I paste below comments made -

"I'm waiting for the parade of knife wielding chavs clutching bottles of buckfast tonic wine. Yeah i agree so far it's full of sterotypes and it's embarrassing

I'm kind of seeing rich bankers destroy country...nothing new

I could do with not seeing the "dancing industrialists" and their weak moves again. They're like dads dancing at a wedding

Christ, this is embarassing. British people aren't really like this. Honest!

England, I'm sorry, but this is like watching Blazing Saddles. I can't get anything but amused....and I'm laughing as I'm typing here and watching on the other screen. It's all to over the top stereotype and over the top absurd.God... laughing is all I can do.

So what are all the hospital beds symbolizing? Future plague or something? Really bizarre....

Oh..there is Mary Poppins.. ...flying in with umbrellas. (I wish I were kidding)

LOL. I see a paedo with a chariot collecting kids.

About the tree of life symbology definetely could tie in with peter pans neverland where any humans go there live forever. The dancing with the kids on trampling beds and nurses is crazy, now there dark ninjas and what seems like a 100 foot grim reaper conducting the choreography , now dozens of marry poppens flating around and ninja backflip mahen,, they look like ninjas,, the freak did i just see?

It's taken a bit of a dark turn. There's now a 40-foot paedo, and nurses making weird handsigns. No idea what all this is about.

I was joking when I said I expected Mary Poppins to appear at any moment. It was a laugh at the extreme, goofy..corny stereo typing.

She really DID come...following a BUNCH of little Dick Van Dykes flying in on unbrellas. (slaps forehead)If only I were kidding.. I wish I were.

chariots of fire ...classic but with mr.bean good god they desperate

What is this guys? It's cultural or something. I don't recognize anything but to say it looks like an English version of High School Musical or something

rocket guys with jet packs.....popping glitter bombs...and thats absolutely all the meaning I got from that? What am I missing? This has to make more sense for the British here, doesn't it?

Jack in the box guy after a bender??

Vomit time. Damn, this is gross."

It gets worse - the commentator's just said the drummers are not actually banging the buckets/drums... they're made of plastic. So the noise must be recorded.

Oh dear - team GB have just appeared - in outfits decorated with bits of gold foil... The Queen still looking stony faced... not surprised.

Commentator said Danny Boyle wanted all this to be on so late so he could do clever things with lighting.

She was picking her finger nails and looking at her hands as the team GB burst out onto the scene!

The TV transmission seemed a bit disjointed when it showed footage shot at another location - I take it that this footage was shown on big screens to the live audience in the stadium?

Yes Kes - very confusing... There were big screens round the top of the stadium.

Now we have Arctic Monkeys - why? Completely broken the atmosphere - sure the Queen wants to go to bed.

So it was all pretty naff -my husband didn't understand most of it despite Italian comentary and my attempts at explanation. God knows what they thought about it in Rwanda or Guam or the Congo...

After half an hour of feeling faintly embarassed I began to understand where it was coming from -until it turned from the hard-working ethic of the British Isles to the youth culture of today based on TV and technology.

As Susie said: thank goodness the athletes started to enter into the Stadium at that point - All the world in a Stadium- globalisation in its essence- a celebration of humanity.

Dianne, embarrassing is a word I hadn't quite got around to but it's very fitting.

Hope no one minded my running commentary...

The athletes' parade was interesting in that there were so many small countries and groups of islands that one never hears about - and some of the costumes were amazing and very colourful. The best thing was seeing the happy smiling faces of the participants.

We've had the lighting of the flame... I thought the design of the cauldron was stunning and very imaginative - but then I am an admirer of its designer Thomas Heatherwick. Was only thinking yesterday I hadn't heard of him for a while - now I know what he's been up to.

It should all have finished there but it's STILL GOING... nobody seems to know how to pack it up.

We've now got Paul Macartney for heaven's sake... and Hey Jude my least favourite Beatles song. Pack it in Paul, you look and sound terrible, time to give up the day job.

Sue Barker just said she thought it was an immensely funny evening -too true but not quite in the way she meant.

It's over - thank goodness.

mobertol 28-07-2012 00:05

Re: Olympics have officially Begun - But...

Didn't have the British commentary but like you(Susie) thought the design of the cauldron and the Olympic flame truly represents each nation, though lit through the Olympions of the past nominating a young athlete to carry their light to the new games -very evocative.

Great fireworks -but then I'm a fan.

The representation of Brit music was also well done - even the Sex Pistols represented!

Tried to be too "Hollywood", having the Queen as a Bond girl, though it made me smile, then Beckham speedboating it up the Thames with a winning smile was just too much...no doubt Posh will be having erotic dreams about it tonight...:D
