Coronation Street is Rubbish!?

Saw this article in the Daily Mirror about Coronation Street...

Coronation Street is being killed says Mike Baldwin actor Johnny Briggs - mirror.co.uk

former Corrie Star, Johnny Briggs is slagging the show off saying it's gone down hill.

I stopped watching it when they brought in Michelle Collins so I don't know what has been going on. Fans are saying that it's going they way of Brookside.

What story lines would you like to see? Do you think it's gone wrong?

We don't want the Rovers landlady talking with a scouse accent she's bad enough with a lancashire one or so I'm told:D

Michelle Collins recently played Fred Dibnah's wife at a play at the Octagon, and did a fairly believable Lancashire acccent.

The story lines have gone from the plain daft, to the ludicrous and finally to the looniest.

Himself used to be an avid fan, though I could take it or leave it...but even he has become disaffected with the show recently........and he can't abide Michelle Collins. So I can't see him tuning in until she has gone.

I don't even know what's going on in it anymore - nor Emmerdale soaps are a waste of time really - I understand how people get pulled into them..

1) By liking the characters. 2) Then you want to find out what happened to them. 3) Hence you are compelled to watch it! But it's just dots on a screen really - NOT REAL! :)

Yes, I appreciate it isn't real. Most of us look to TV for entertainment....to take us away for half an hour from our own mundane existence.....but there is precious little that is entertaining these days on the box.

I was thinking that they are setting the storyline up for Sally to be Franks next victim and it will come out he's done it before! :do-one:

Note: I know I said I don't watch TV no more but someone gave me a PC TV USB and Software so I take the occasional peek at the soaps - Emmerdale has been gripping lately!

Re: Coronation Street is Rubbish!?

I still watch it, and will carry on doing so, as long as I find it to be essential viewing.

Johnny Briggs? Sour grapes.

Michelle Collins accent's got better, of late.

Though I don't know why she just couldn't have been a southerner. Just as Mike Baldwin was. People do move about the country, from within a mile of where they were born, so I'm informed.

Johnny Briggs never attempted to play anything other than he was, a cockney wide boy. Who in his time, had some truly ludicrous storylines himself.

It's nothing like the dying days of Brookside, which went totally loopy.

Corrie is still a good mix of northern drama....and humour.

I think Sally's going to be taken up the alley too.

Second Corrie claim to fame, besides Vicky Entwistle chasing me home from church, shouting she loved me, which I recently asked her if she remembered, which she did, saying I was her first love, ahhhh.

When I was a college, we used to drink in the Everyman Theatre bar.

We were sat at a table with Brookie's Karen Grant, and Craig Charles, now in Corrie, but then a relatively unknown comedian married to the then more famous Cathy Tyson, came across, and said I had nice hair.

Weird, but true.

Don't worry, I don't have anymore Corrie trivia to share.

Dennis Tanner, played by the original actor, is back.

He was living rough on the streets, but is now shacked up with Rita Littlefair, that was.

Is the Rovers Return now owned by one of those pub chains that put desperately naive punters behind the bar and then hike up the rent and price of beer to the poor tenant until after 3 months of working 24/7 the tenant does a moonlight, leaving Corries producer free to introduce a new up and coming star straight from his casting couch?

If not, why not?
That would make the series more true to life.

Groove thinks Emmerdale has been the best soap this year. Corry goes hot and cold and regularly has periods of poor storylines. Emmerdale is gonna be good with Cain getting a hiding resulting ina whodunnit scenario, with several suspects with a grudge against Cain.

Another safe bet, in Emmerdale - I reckon is that Amy's kid, of which Cain is the father - will have the bone marrow match for Debbie and Andy's daughter Sarah - so all's well that end's well ha? :mosher:

No, not name dropping 'again'. Just adding a little colour, to yet one more moany old thread.

If I was into name dropping, I can come up with many more impressive ones to drop, than Vicky, and Craig Charles.

Corrie has lost the plot since the Tram Crash.

How did Becky manage to find a handsome man who is moving to Barbados? Which man in his right mind would think of her as a 'catch'. A chain smoking, drunk who loots corner shops. Bonkers.

Plus I don't like it's depiction of Northerners as adulterous drunks. I can't think of one long-term marriage in it (Hayley and Roy? Mmm) or a traditional family set-up.

I agree with some of your points! One big error in all soaps is the issue of prison visits. They always get non-family members visit appointments on the day at short notice! In reality that does not happen. An individual or family member can not turn up at a prison to see someone in there by cold calling - they just would not get in. Yet in soaps they always do - it's rubbish! Your right they are all stereo types all northerners arn't drunks or wife swappers - except maybe Jaysay! :p:D

Yep the prison visit thing has always bugged me too. We used to visit a lifer who was an old school friend of my partner and had to wait for him to send us a visiting order before we could go and see him. He was in several different gaols before he topped himself and the routine was always the same.

Not sure as I didn't watch Summer Wine on a regular basis. Here is a Street trivia question: what was the name of Minnie Caldwell's cat?

I am not in the habit of making false declarations, anyway you undoubtedly don't need your ego boosting Margaret.:D

I appreciate being called "young "as i no longer am that youthful, wish i was.

My declarations are always truthful - this so that they who have received them know that I am always to be believed. Absolutely.

He was in several different gaols before he topped himself and the routine was always the same.

Yep that is right - the Prisons arn't hotels were family members can just turn up and get in. As you say a request/visiting order is sent out by the prisoner to who he wants to see and that takes about 1 month. If they change their mind there is nothing you can do. So when you see soup actors swanning in and out of the nick like they are in Benidorm it's non-sense.

I don't think they care. In the time they have it's easier and more effective to ignore reality to keep the story flowing.:hesoff:

Are prison visiting times not more relaxed, when someone's only held on remand?

As Fiz was recently?

Although you're imprison, you haven't been found guilty of any crime.

It's the same. Because if they remand someone it's usually coz they are afraid they may repeat the offence or are probably guilty.

How often you can visit someone in prison

'A convicted prisoner is allowed at least two 60-minute visits every four weeks

A prisoner on remand (waiting for their trial) is allowed three 60-minute visits a week.'

Visiting someone in prison : Directgov - Crime and justice

According to this a prisoner on remand can have three hours of visits per week.

As opposed to to two hours per month/4 weeks.

Not the case, Bail is normally refused cos of nature of offence/ Police object/ No fixed Address,/Fear of repeat, is only 1 possibility./ Likely to be guilty don't come into it.

Not necessarily, what he and I said about visiting convicted prisoners is correct, but it does seem that the regime is more relaxed for those on remand. Still don't think you could just turn up at the prison unannounced.

Here you go: Barry Stanton (born ? ?, 1940) played Albert Cook on Coronation Street in 1967 and Tony Ditchburn in 1981. His other credits include The Sweeney, Upstairs, Downstairs, Minder, Yes, Prime Minister and the 1994 film The Madness of King George.
From Barry Stanton - Corriepedia - Coronation Street, UK soap opera

His parents had an icecream shop/cafe on Whalley Road just below the railway bridge, on the same side of the road as the Clock Garage. We used to hang out there on Sunday afternoons in the early 60s. I can still taste their Vimto ice lollies!

Do you mind me asking why you want to know?

Well thanks for clearing it all up I wasn't 100% sure! However the issue I was pointing out was that an individual family or otherwise except legal representation - can't just turn up at a prison and demand to see a prisoner! They have to go through the process of getting a Visitors form sent to them by the prisoner. The rest if it is splitting hairs!

Also has any Corrie actor got a part in Eastenders?

I wasn't sure! But the point I was sure about was that the prisoner has to send them a visitors request form and that visitors can't just turn up on the day and demand to see a prisoner. Which is what you see in soups and the way it's done is like it's on the same day or the day after someone gets nicked! Perhaps it certain circumstances they can? But once someone is convicted they can't!

Yes Kestrel and the reason you and I know this about convicted prisoners is that we have both been through the experience of prison visiting.

I presume you are talking about Barry Stanton. My post about him was over a week ago and I wasn't sure you had seen it. I assume my info was correct according to your mum.

It would be helpful if you quoted the post you are replying to as there have been quite a lot on different topics since then.
