Game of thrones (HBOS)

I saw some trailers for the series the other day so I thought I'd look it up online to have a watch, Series 1 episode 1, then 2,3,4,5 through to 10 in quick succession (a couple of episodes a night). Shocking, absolutely shocking, gratuitous & lascivious, debauchery, incest, homosexuality & posseltutes, nudity for the sake of it & the language, even as an ex-Squaddie it made my ears turn pink! Not your average Saturday afternoon family viewing with Gran or the Parents by any stretch of the imagination.

It's proper train crash viewing & morbid curiosity will keep pulling you back in to watch it, the rise & fall of great families, their desire & ambition for riches, putting it about with all & sundry, domination, death & destruction most horrible & violent, the right to rule. I sat & watched 5 episodes of series 2 yesterday evening. If you don't mind the disgustingnessness mentioned above & you enjoy your swords & sorcery (& can cope with bits flaccidly flopping about blokeys & wimmins) well worth a watch, but don't come back here all offended if it upsets your sensibilities, you were warned! :D

Rating 18+ + +

Re: Game of thrones (HBOS)

I have never watched it, although I have seen my adult grandchildren make similar comments about it as you have.

I used to be capable of reading and watching horror and violence. I was an avid fan of Stephen King and Dean Koonz. I ceased being a horror fan when I adopted a stress free policy of living, so that when I see or read it now I find it mentally and physically repellant.

I do not require such images to invade my conciousness. They do stir up an emotional and ,thus a hormonal, bodily response which I find very uncomfortable. An adrenalin increase does you no good at all.

There is even a rather, some consider, outlandish theory that such such negative emotion is provoked in order to be energetically harvested by other dimensional intelligent beings. It is named 'loosh' by an 'out of body experience' researcher named Robert A Monroe (amongst others) - a sort of psychic vampirism.

Whether you consider that possible or not - watching such violence is not physically harmless, so why do it.

You ain't planning to watch it, it isn't going to give off fumes, it's probably been developed by, the bankers so that they can take even more control of the participants way of life, just put your foil helmet on and you'll be safe.

Sorry, did I miss my appointment? I don't recall booking in with you Doctor Mags. :)

It's a TV series, I'm a bloke & not averse to some good looking Wench waggling her bits about, not so keen about the tadgers though. ;) As to the rest of it, I believe I have the mental faculty to discern fact from fantasy/fiction, enough to be able to function affably within a civilised society.

Unlike yourself I've not been reclusive & have enjoyed or not as the case maybe the big wide World in all its grime & glory, from the simple pleasures of family, friends & nature, to the depths of depravity that mankind can inflict upon each other (being a soldier afforded me this insight to our darker nature.) But despite it all I'm still plodding along gamely, like I said it's a television series, It's not real & as long as I can make that distinction I think I'll get by. :)

I just don't watch any TV anymore - haven't switched it on in weeks !.

I don't express an opinion on something I know nothing about.

In the past I had a close male friend who was employed by HM Customs to impound such 'material' at Liverpool docks.

I don't believe so Mags, maybe some of the others mentioned may remember the evening. Memory can be so selective I know & perhaps I'm wrong (although I honestly don't think so). Like I said I was quite surprised by the contributors contributions which is why I recalled the event. :)

Don't worry about it Dave, there are enough gentlemen that remember what some ladies were like until they found purity.

I have admitted that I was promiscuous for a short time following the breakdown of my 2nd marriage. I understand why I was like that and expressed regret (my blog - now deleted). I have never indulged in porn, nor have I ever expressed approval of it. It is denegration of women to be useful chattels for male satisfaction. ie. a tool to combat impotence.

It was expressed to friends only in order to explain the immoral behaviour. It is difficult to explain what effects living with a narcissistic psycho does to you after you have been told you are worthless and undesirable for 8 years.

I needed to prove to myself that I was still 'desirable'.

For which they volunteer & are well paid! Most of the girls involved have made a conscious choice to take up the profession. Just because you can't agree with their career choice does that make them any less worthwhile? they're working, probably juggling their lives & making a contribution to the governments coffers.

So Sugarmouse who dances tables for a living should be condoned for her life choice? Well, after all, following your thinking it's only a step away from performing lewdness for a camera!

Blimey, Dave ! Think you are a bit over the top with your description of this series. Not half as bad as you have painted.

My son introduced me to the books a couple of years ago, and have read nearly all of them.

I don't have Sky, but son had the DVD's of the 1st series and watched them back-to-back. They have got the characters just right but, of course, never as good as the books. Loads missed out.

I'm definitely hooked.

It's been absolutely riveting and a never miss for me for all three series. I'm biased..I'm a swords and sorcery nutjob and love this kinda stuff.

Yeah there's nudity, and violence...In my opinion its part of the tapestry of the story. Death aint clean and pretty a la Richard Greene and Errol Flynn, getting hit with a sword does not result in a pinprick of blood appearing on your chest, nor, I imagine, would a bloke who is probably about to die give his missus a quick peck on the cheek before wrapping his bright colourful blanket around him and falling asleep.

It's a great story, with rich characters, goodies with faults and foibles who sometimes do bad things, baddies with humanity and honour who sometimes do good things, the main actors actually die without warning. It has great shock value, whether its the nudity, the violence or the sudden twist in the tale and I'm literally drooling in anticipation for series 4 next year.

You know its funny how a few boobs and bums on TV has the rent-a-feminist brigade screaming exploitation, yet the sado-masochistic puerile nonsense of 50 shades of grey was lauded as liberating to women...go figure

Anything by Home Box Office is always top notch.
My jailbroken Applebox has frozen so I can't watch the last 2 episodes remaining of GofT until it's fixed.

HBO's Deadwood for sheer aural assault with swear words Ian McShane plays Sheriff Al Swearingen... absolutely marvellous character.
Google "The number of ducks (sic) in Deadwood"
A few clips on youTube will give you a flavour.

As my mate Walter used to say "Thur's some reight salty dialogue in theer D"

;)

Dragging this back to the original topic ;) I have to agree with this consensus as I have read all of the books released so far and will probably start them again soon. Yes a lot has been left out of the series/ changed slightly for clarity for non book readers but it's still an excellent read/watch. Nudity never hurt anyone, I grew up watching Kenny Everett and as I am fond to say, nothing wrong with a bit of smut! :hehetable
The author has actually been quoted as saying a lot of the storyline is based on history ***WARNING SPOILERS IN LINK FOR NON READERS**** 'Game of Thrones is more brutally realistic than most historical novels' | Television & radio | The Guardian

In the meantime I've ordered the box set of "A song of ice & fire" 7 books & a free Map of Westeros no less! to be going on with. :)

The books are great- so much more detail. You'll look at them and think it'll take forever to finish them all but you'll soon end up in the same boat as me and hoping for some small snippets of info when the next one will eventually be published! Think I'm gonna start rereading them again :)

Her best line for me.

Arya: That's stupid. If I need help, I'll shout 'help'.

Not for me matey, I've read all the books (still waiting for the guy to get a grip & finish off the chronicles) so know how things pan out, the protagonist got off lightly if you ask me, there death should have been far more ghastly & gruesome. ;)
