Brief Encounter
Just watching a recording of Brief Encounter, a so-called classic film starring Trevor Howard. All I can say is I've had painful bowel movements that are far more entertaining than this load of bilge. And I bet Barry Norman never said that in all his film reviews.

Re: Brief Encounter
I thought it was just me being a philistine.
I have seen the film, and could not understand why it was seen as a great film, a classic. To me it was just a mediocre black and white film. |

Re: Brief Encounter
I love the way the Doctor, a chest specialist, chain smokes his way through the film, brilliant

Re: Brief Encounter
I much prefer the Victoria Wood version.

Re: Brief Encounter
Being a lover of what we used to call 'the black and whites' I used to find it a little to clip English, but over the years and particularly with the new Blu-Ray issue in such high quality detail its a nostalgic watch.
David Lean was of course an accomplished film director and a screen play based around Noel Cowards Still Life all set 1938 with much of the film being shot at Carnforth Stn in blackout conditions during 1945. In some movie reference books its rating is well up there with the likes of 'Attack of the killer tomatoes' but in film circles it is regarded at a classic of British cinema. Stockport Plaza Super Cinema have a annual screening of it which is packed each year also possibly due to the art deco restaurant where you can enjoy afternoon tea 40's style with some people also going in costume. Fair to say then its at its best shown on a big screen where you can get the full impact and detail of the locations perhaps. Happy days! Talking about Tomatoes they are showing THE BLOB Steve MCQueen in October if you like the old drive in movies http://stockportplaza.co.uk |
Re: Brief Encounter
And also remember the wonderful background music which got me interested in my lifelong passion for classical music Rachmaninovs 2nd piano concerto

Re: Brief Encounter
The music was the best bit of the film. I love that piece.

Most of the stuff that we are told is 'good' these days, I find to be far less than good and in many cases it is dire. I might have some grey in my hair, but I have not yet lost the power of critical thought. |

Re: Brief Encounter
we,ve had a go at brief encounter. is there other so called popular films that people are less than keen on. for me my worst three are Casablanca, Titanic and Gone With The Wind..

Re: Brief Encounter
Another pet hate of mine are televisions TV reporters where the studio go over live to a on the spot journalist to ask what his or hers views are of a current event. They should be reporting happenings not giving there own view on something which is why I always turn over or off whenever this inevitably happens every blasted day.
Talking of old films I'm still watching silent films made in the late 1800's never mind Brief Encounter. EE 1898 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXI6rBKI5Qc |
Re: Brief Encounter
I dislike Casablanca....haven't ever watched Titanic or Gone with the Wind.
39 Steps is dire, the lady on a train....I cringe when I see these as I know himself will inevitably watch them for the millionth time (ok, maybe It wasn't a million, maybe it was a million and one) |
Re: Brief Encounter
I like Casablanca, but I'm not fond of Gone With The Wind, mainly owing to the ham acting of Leslie Howard. And speaking of ham actors, I've always thought that Laurence Olivier was vastly overrated. Titanic was OK, but I prefer A Night To Remember's telling of the event.

Re: Brief Encounter
Like Casablanca although it could have been a different film and ending which was pretty much undecided during filming.
Watched Scrooge last night 1935 :-) |

Re: Brief Encounter
Me neither Cashy...like you, we know the ending, but also I was never really keen on Leonardo Di Caprio or Kate Winslet and that put me off watching it too.
I am not a big fan of films. I have been disappointed so many times. I am sure they show the few best bits as trailers and the rest of the film is dross. Himself watches some right tripe. He likes violent films full of bad language...when they come on I make a quick exit upstairs. He will sometimes say 'don't run away' but I tell him I won't run away if he stops watching the rubbish that he watches. No wonder he fights in his sleep. |

Maybe it's those boxing gloves that you gave him for Christmas, :D
