Hi I'm a new member, thank you for the welcome. I am researching my family tree. My Mother Mary J Shaw was born in Accrington 1901, the daughter of James Shaw a school teacher, who lived at 103 Manchester Rd. Mother, married
William Young Sept 1923 at Haslingden, he was an officer in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he was awarded the Military Cross & Bar in WW1 the address when applying for his medals = 50 Plantation St Accrington. Can anyone advise how i can obtain local records relating to this etc JG |

He may have moved into Accrington after the war. Medals had to be applied for usually in the 1920's, its not often there is an address on the back, about 1 in 500, so your lucky. Have you tried seaching in the Haslingden area to see if he is on any of their R-O-Hnr. I don't think theres any one in Rossendale doing WW1 research on the same scale as me, try the library first. Retlaw, many thanks for the information. I have tried 1911 census but failed to find him at addressea in accrington, I have been unable to trace his birth cirtificate and his parants, but I have located his marriage Sept 1923 the blank i'm trying to fill is his birth and war years leading up to 1923 ?

Re: jggeoff
Hello Geoff and welcome,I did a couple of checks and here are some possibilities for you.
James born 1869 in Trawden married Minnie Ethel Preston on Aug. 4th 1898 in Colne. Jame,s father was Thomas Shaw who married Margaret Ann Badger in 1862 at Christ Church Chatburn. Thomas was born in 1821 at Trawden and Margaret in 1833 in Worston, they were farmers "Top of Trawden" They had three other sons and three daughters, you can find them in the 1881 census. Hope this is correct and helpful. |
