Will someone help me describe the Just William books to the youngsters on here? I was in the chatroom and i came out with im going to thcream and thcream till im thick! And they didnt know what i was talking about! Violet Elizabeth and all that. Used to like reading the books and watching it sunday teatimes.

Or is it im just getting old..........................

I never read the books but do remember the 'Just William' series on tv in the 70's.

William'n neighbour Mrs. Bott was played by the wonderful Diana Dors. Her precocious brat of a daughter was played by Bonnie Langford, whose career will always be associated with the part.

Can anyone recall seeing the old black and white film of Just William starring a young Dennis Waterman, he of "Minder" & "The Sweeney" fame? It was made late 1940's/early '50's, I think. I saw it in the early 1990's, when I was in my teens.

William always MEANT well - it's just that it didn't turn out quite like that ..... The wonderful world of grown-ups never seemed to realise what good intentions he had and how he was thwarted along the way. I could certainly identify with that! Painting the swing comes to mind ....

I read all the William books, as a child, and used to listen to it on the radio on Saturday mornings when I was about 5. I thought, at the time, Violet Elizabeth was called Violent Elizabeth.

My children read all the books, too, and loved them. It amuses me now to think how the stories started off with him living in a large house with a cook, maid and gardener but in the last books he lived in an average semi. He also managed to remain 11 years old from the 1920s, when his sister wore cloche hats and shingled hair, throughout WW2 and through to the 50s and Russian spies.

In the last few years Martin Jarvis has read William stories on Radio 4 and they're still brilliant.

That reminds me. William had a sister in the 70's television series with shingled hair and cloche hats, who was incredibley beautiful, and with whom I was in love.

I think the actress was callled Stacey somebody. Can anyone else remember her, or her name?
