Re: scotch eggs
:D Have you ever tried making a Scotch egg? Pesky things to get even. I always get more meat at one side than the other.:(

Re: scotch eggs
Was it a Scotch egg you bit into...or a Dog's egg?

Why do they call 'em Scotch eggs? don't remember any ingredient being of the whisky variety, but maybe they do add this in Scotland :) When I was at school, after the rock cakes, this was the delectable dish we had to produce ... could never get the sausage meat to bind proper .. and finished up all cracked and parting itself from the egg very quickly. Tasted good though, better than in the supermarkets. ;) |

Home made is always better and it is an artform to get the binding right and even harder if doing mini ones. |
Re: scotch eggs
Kate sounds like proper scotch eggs.. but i'll bet it was buckfast you were mixing in.. anyways stop tryin to make out the scots ain't putting small eggs in.. we know what you lot are up to! just another ploy to break down these Isles .. after all we all are British!

Re: scotch eggs
Now pay attention, I shall be asking questions later.
When you make a scotch egg you cover the egg with a coating of sausage meat and breadcrumbs. If it's going to work at all the sausage meat must stick to the outside of the egg, right? If it doesn't - it will just fall off into a sad little heap and you're just left with, er, an egg, right? Now we get to the tricky bit. Mancie bit into a scotch egg that had a loose egg inside, an egg with a space round it, an egg that didn't fit. We've already proved that the egg must have fit inside before the thing was cooked, haven't we? So what happened? The answer is obvious. This egg was laid by a Shrinking Leghorn hen. This breed comes out of the supermarket freezer weighing 6 lbs. Once home in your kitchen it is left to thaw and within a few hours you have rather a large pool of water and a chicken that weighs 4lbs. 8oz. Once it has been roasted, the chicken you thought was big enough to feed a family of 6 is just big enough to feed 3 of you, as long as you're not very hungry. The egg was patently the offspring of one of these and, true to the breed, it shrank to half size in the oven. Q.E.D. |
Re: scotch eggs
I think Scotch eggs must have come about from a need to be frugal, just like the Yorkshire pudding did over the border.
You stuff yourself on something that's relatively cheap, and then aren't disappointed when there is only a bit of meat. Just like the Scotch egg. It looks like a big dollop of breadcrumb covered sausage meat, but most of the inside is filled with a cheap chucky egg.:D |
