a question for you

Does coleslaw count as one of your 5 veg portions a day?

Because it is veg - carrots, cabbage and onions - just covered in mayonnaise.

ShortStuff 30-01-2007 18:52

Re: a question for you

It should count as 3 of your 5 a day if it's got carrots, cabbage & onions!!

Mancie 30-01-2007 18:53

Re: a question for you

awww!... to late..yes 3.. and fruit salad, pears, peaches, and cherries (but I recall someone complaining there were only 2 cherries in a tin)

shillelagh 30-01-2007 18:55

Re: a question for you

yeah but you arent eating 1 full carrot are you or half an onion etc

Margaret Pilkington 30-01-2007 19:07

Re: a question for you

I think it would be safe to say that one serve of coleslaw = one portion of your five a day fruit and veggies......OK, i know there is more than just one veg, but you aren't eating the whole of a carrot or a portion of Cabbage and onions.

Mancie 30-01-2007 19:16

Re: a question for you

but what if its a large portion of coleslaw.... made with a whole carrot, half a cabbage and a whole onion... eh? not so sure now are you? :D

ShortStuff 30-01-2007 19:18

Re: a question for you

It depends on the size of the portion rather than the number of actually fruit/veg in the serving.

Margaret Pilkington 30-01-2007 19:21

Re: a question for you

If it is double the size of the usual portion then, yes it will count as two...or three if you are particularly greedy/hungry.
The size of the portion is usually designated on the pack....ie, serves two etc.

panther 30-01-2007 19:23

Re: a question for you

but its not very healthy with all that mayonaise!!

entwisi 30-01-2007 21:07

Re: a question for you

1 portion is classed as 1 handful of an item, having 2 handfuls doesn't count as two!

shillelagh 30-01-2007 21:08

Re: a question for you

oooooooooo a handful of coleslaw?

Yep.. my dad used to say "more than a handful is just going to waste" Peter Andre take note

WillowTheWhisp 30-01-2007 21:42

Re: a question for you

If one handful counts as one portion how come two handfuls doesn't count as two portions? Whose hands are we using to measure it out? Yours may be bigger than mine! :p

entwisi 30-01-2007 21:53

Re: a question for you

is about people not just eating 5 handfuls of one type, they are all measures/values made up by this goverment anyway!

WillowTheWhisp 30-01-2007 22:01

Re: a question for you

The Healthy Heart Campaign reckons you should choose different colours of fruit and veg too - so not all green ones. Coleslaw in multi handfuls has to count for more than one portion because it's got more than one thing in it though surely?

entwisi 30-01-2007 22:19

Re: a question for you

like I said, this is all made up stuff anyway, no 'real' scientific evidence

Mancie 30-01-2007 22:41

Re: a question for you

oh nuts! I fell into the trap.. I thought this was a joke thread but now understand its a real dicussion about health and having whole carrots/not whole carrots..whats up doc?

garinda 30-01-2007 23:05

Re: a question for you

If you just had one piece of cabbage/onion/carrot from a tub of coleslaw, I'm guessing it doesn't count as three of your five daily fruit and veg portions.

WillowTheWhisp 30-01-2007 23:08

Re: a question for you

What if you just lick the mayo off the cabbage? :D

flashy 31-01-2007 11:37

Re: a question for you

panther 31-01-2007 11:49

Re: a question for you

According to the Healthy Heart bods unless your apples are one red and one green/golden they only count as one!
:D

panther 31-01-2007 12:55

Re: a question for you

WillowTheWhisp 31-01-2007 13:08

Re: a question for you

It usually says on the packaging. Unless you've made it yourself as Flashy does. But I would imagine that one portion of coleslaw = one of your five a day (although saying that how big is a portion???)

LancYorkYankee 31-01-2007 17:12

Re: a question for you

There' an extra benefit that come from eating things like cole slaw, cottage cheese, saurkraut, yogurt, etc. These types of items are filled with acidophyls (sp?) which are a huge boost to the good bacteria in the intestines. Helps us out in all kinds of ways especially with digestion and cancer prevention!

Yeah, I believe flashy's right. I'm not even sure I've ever even see a white cabbage and I've gardened for ~40 years.

Well done Flashy, that would explain why it tastes so bitter .. yeh, come to think of it never saw any white cabbage myself there (just love it raw) .. don't know what they are missing. Wonder it be possible to grow ? Or could start new export business ?.. :D

Thanks for the pic. Ian. That's not as white as I would have expected. Can you give me a couple of names of the varieties you guys grow or buy?

Thanks, Brian

It looks whiter than that the further in you get and the crunchy stuff put in cole slaw here is almost totally white, not of that pale green looking stuff.
