spread eagle pub

i have been reserching the pub i live in (spreadeagle) and ive been trying to find out how long its been a pub etc,i have been to accy libray and found out a bit more (thanks to catherine ) ive found out there were beer houses and public houses,i also found out that in 1947 the spread was still a beer house and the landlord was a william holmes does anyone remember him or the pub being a beer house, and not a public house?( the differance is that a public house can sell spirits and a beer house only sold beer)and has anyone got any photos of this part of blackburn rd?or any info on the pub?i also found out that in 1888 the rear of the pub was called pomfrets yard has anyone heard of this or what was its use ?
and if anyone likes a knees up were having one on paddys night as the landlady (sheila)has been in the pub 8yrs on that night, everyone is welcome.

ive always believed the spread eagle got its name because you can view teh spread eagle on teh coppice from its front door very clearly

wheni say clearly i meant before hbc and all teh rest of teh pople who think they know anything wrecked teh coppice by sticking fences and extra trees up there that now block the spread eagle from propper view

Don't know about the history of the pub,but my grandfather and family at the 1901 census were living at no. 1 Pomfret Yard so there was at least one residence there.

Is the Lamb and the one up the road from it in Clayton still open? They are in the middle of a terrace.

Re: spread eagle pub

This is absolutely no help to anyone but about 20 years ago when I'd just left college I had a job as an artist at a signwriters and I painted the Spread Eagle pub sign - feathers are quite specialed to do and so I did a lot of bird related pub signs around Lancashire around that time.

End of boring trivia fact no. 723!
