Why?

When we first moved to Accy I was gob smacked because almost everybody eats their Easter Eggs on Easter Sunday.
Why is this.
Even religious people do this and they are supposed to know about Easter?
Perhaps Accywebbers can enlighten me.

Re: Why?

Well I'm one of those 'religious people' I suppose and Easter Sunday is the celebration day for me so that's the day to eat yer eggs!

Good Friday is definately a no-no for egg eating as Friday was they day of the Atonement and Crucifixion and is therefore a sombre and reflective day. Saturday was the second day, the Jewish sabbath when basically not a lot happened as far as the disciples were concerned. Jesus' body had been laid in the tomb on the Friday eve before the start of the Sabbath and then the Saturday was their holy day and day for not doing anything. The third day, the Sunday, the day after their Sabbath was the day when they could do things again and Mary Magdalene went to the tomb - remember they hadn't had time to embalm him or anything on the Friday because Sabbath starts at sunset. (good job too!) But instead of finding a body she found an empty tomb - and the risen Christ.

So Sunday, the third day, the day he rose from the dead is the celebration day and the most obvious day to me to chomp on the celebratory egg or two. Mind you, the number of eggs our kids got from friends and each other they will still be eating them a week later!!

Hope that explains it from a religious person's point of view anyway :)

Re: Why?

So have you always eaten them on the Monday Bert? It's actually the existence of Easter Monday which puzzles me because there is no Biblical reference to the Monday as anything significant. It's the Friday and the Sunday that were the pivotal days, the first day and the third day.

easter eggs don't last two minutes in our house. They are there to be eaten aren't they? As Homer would say "Mmm chocolate".

Never thought about it before -- eaten them at any time. Off shortly to Canterbury and if I see the Archbishop will ask him about it.

Is it not to celebrate the end of the fasting period of Lent when traditionaly on Easter Sunday, catholics may cease their fasting and start again whatever they gave up for lent, after they attend Sunday mass.

garinda 12-04-2007 09:39

Re: Why?

I'm with Willow. Traditionally Easter eggs should be eaten on Easter Day, as that is the day the women who were going to annoint Jesus's body, saw that the stone, later represented by an egg, had been rolled away from the entrance to the tomb.

Another reason why we use eggs to celebrate the resurrection is that one is mentioned when Mary Magdalene went to visit Emporer Tiberias.

Tradition relates, that in Italy Mary Magdalene visited the Emperor Tiberias (14-37 AD) and proclaimed to him about Christ's Resurrection. According to tradition, she took him an egg as a symbol of the Resurrection, a symbol of new life with the words: "Christ is Risen!" Then she told Tiberias that, in his Province of Judea, Jesus the Nazarene, a holy man, a maker of miracles, powerful before God and all mankind, was executed on the instigation of the Jewish High-Priests and the sentence affirmed by the procurator Pontius Pilate. Tiberias responded that no one could rise from the dead, anymore than the egg she held could turn red. Miraculously, the egg immediately began to turn red as testimony to her words. Then, and by her urging, Tiberias had Pilate removed from Jerusalem to Gaul, where he later suffered a horrible sickness and an agonizing death.

I never thought that Easter eggs had any religious status. I thought they symbolised the start of Spring  mthead's also just explained they symbolise the tomb ...... eeeee you learn sommat new every day. :)

Re: Why?

I don't think it matters when you eat them, but it does matter which end you start eating first. Much debate has been raging on this point ever since Swift described the consequences of choosing the wrong end.

Margaret Pilkington 12-04-2007 14:30

Re: Why?

I, too have always kept the Easter Eggs until Sunday...and i was always taught that an egg looks dead, but has the essence of life.....Jesus was dead, but after the resurrection he was alive in the hearts of men.

Let's not forget Anne is originally from Preston.

Rather than eat the Easter eggs, she was brought up to believe she should be rolling them down the hill in Avenham Park.;)

Sorry Chuck(y egg) couldn't resist it.:D

Re: Why?

Mmmm lots of interesting answers here. Rindy's right. Well sort of.
This is what I was led to believe, firstly by Mum n Dad and later through Sunday School.
Good Friday was the Day that Jesus was Crusified. He rose again 3day's after the Crusifiction.
Day 1 Saturday, Day 2 Sunday, Day 3 Easter Monday. Assention Day.
The Chocolate eggs are to represent the rolling away of the tomb stone. It was considered unlucky to eat the eggs before Easter Monday without rolling them, till they broke.
On Easter Monday in Preston has always been a big event were the eggs would be taken to Avenham park and rolled down the big green hill. If it was raining then we wern't allowed to eat the eggs untill they had been rolled in the house and broken.
If they were to symbolise the start of spring Tinks we would be eating our yummy choccy in March.

Ah well there you go, That explains it. Except he didn't rise 3 days after the crucifixion. He rose 'on the third day'. Friday was the first day, Saturday was the second day and Sunday was the third day. This is also why we have Sunday as our holy or Sabbath day. You know that "Six days shalt thou labour and do all that though hast to do but the seventh is the sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no work, neither thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor the stranger within thy gates etc etc..."? Well if you look at a calendar you'll see that Sunday isn't the seventh day. It's the first day.

The Jews (today and in Jesus's time) have Saturday as their Sabbath day because it is the 7th day of the week and they are doing like it says - mind you some ignore the manservant, maidservant and stranger bit and get other people to do things for them on the Sabbath even as far as switching a light on or off for very orthodox Jews.

The early Christians also kept Saturday as their Sabbath but somewhere along the way it was changed to Sunday in honour of the day that Jesus rose from the dead.

Ascension Day is another thing altogether. After his resurrection Jesus spent time with various people. He even had a picnic on the beach and chatted to a couple of chaps on the road to Emmaus but it didn't dawn on them who he was at first. It's generally regarded that he stayed 40 days after his resurrection before ascending to Heaven. This year Ascension Day will officially be May 17th - it's always on a Thursday but some churches sort of celebrate it on the following Sunday. Our church doesn't actually make a thing of it at all though and like "Whitsuntide" which used to be celebrated with Whit Monday walks and things it seems to have become largely forgotten nowadays.

Here endeth the lesson for today :D :D :D

Very interesting thread -- just shows one is never too old to learn. However, I am somewhat concerned as to wether or not Him / Her Up There will give me bad Karma for eating them before the official date. And by the way, as it was a Fiver to go in Canterbury Cathedral I didn`t get the chance to see the Archbishop. ( Footnote: I am rather careful regarding parting with Coin of the Realm these days.)

When do you stop eating Easter Eggs?

Last year my granddaughter got so many she was still eating them in July - she's only allowed a limited amount of chocolate a day. In October I found one lurking on top of a kitchen wall-cupboard. I had a look at it and the chocolate was all, sort of, filmy so I chucked it in the bin.

This year her mum pleaded with everyone not to buy her eggs so she got the money or presents instead - but she still got 4 of them and 2 chocolate rabbits. Sadly, no one bought her a dark chocolate one. If they had, I could have helped to save her teeth and prevent obesity - but I hate milk chocolate.

Re: Why?

Willow we were taught that Friday was the day of the Crucifixion and not day one. Saturday was day one, Easter Sunday we were given an hard boiled egg and a small chocolate egg in a little paper basket to take home and were always told NOT to eat it until Easter Monday. Day 3.
If this wasn't the case then why would we have Easter Monday?
I just naturally assumed that everyone ate their eggs on the Monday, but you live and learn.
Most people nowadays just assume the egg thing is to do with the Easter bunny.

It's a Bank Holiday, not a Christian festival. Up to 1870 it was just an ordinary working day like any other and it has no significance whatever in the religious calendar.
