What do you do with your food waste?
As I write this there is a discussion under way on Radio Lancashire (Tony Livesey inspired) about what you do with left over food.
Tony flushes his down the loo but Alison seems to think this is disgusting. If we have left over cooked food of a sloppy nature it goes down the loo. Uncooked food is compostable but if it has been cooked you can't use it for compost and if you try to put it in the bin it means using a plastic bag which it could burst out of anyway and the smell of it going manky over the fortnight between bin collections would be disgusting. It would also attract vermin. So what do you do with your left overs from the tea table? |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Left over food? You people have that? I have 2 sons... 24 and 19... if there are left overs... they are usually gone by the next day!
Scraps from preparation... peelings etc, go in the compost bin... then onto the garden. Fat cut from meat etc... goes in the dogs dish. On the rare occasion when there are left overs that need disposal... then i agree anything of a sloppy nature would go down the loo! |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
What's food waste???:D I had my dog for 10 years and she polished off any leftovers both cooked and uncooked. She would eat anything and loved curries, garlic, veg etc (although, at times, it would smell like a bad case of C-Difficile in my house:rolleyes:)
Now that the dog has died I have Sparks, there's no such thing as food waste in our house..:D |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
All our left over food goes in the bin, I wasn't aware that you can compost anything, I do all the peelings etc.
|
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
lol, when we had a dog we didn't have such a thing as food waste either. Now we have cats and they are very fussy. They would not eat something discarded by humans.

Re: What do you do with your food waste?

my waste goes in the bin:D heres a question for you where do you put your used cooking fat out of the chip pan???? down the loo, or down the sink or back in the bottle!! |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?

You shouldn't put it down the loo or down the sink, even if you rinse it down with boiling water it will stiil clog the system up. I usually use an old plastic milk bottle and then throw it in the bin. Technically I'm not recycling the milk bottle but it's better than throwing oil/fat down the sink. And this is for somebody who is going to give me a scowl when she reads it :p:p:p:p:p |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Now this one I've wondered about where the recycling rules stand because I'm with you about putting it in a plastic bottle and binning it. I can't think of any better way of disposing of it.

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
mine goes down the sink with lots of fairy and hot water:o.....oops

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
If serving dishes were used instead of just presenting somone with a plateful, then it is hygenically acceptable to reuse any food left in those dishes at the end of a meal. eg - cold mashed potatoes can go into homemade fish cakes, cooked veg can go into soups and omelettes etc. Reheating meat is not recommended more than once and then it needs reheating very thoroughly.
Wasting food is just not the way I was raised - during post war rationing. There was no junk food then, which is probably why it gets left in the 1st place -I cant think of any way of reusing cooked potnoodle, but I never eat it so havent tried :D |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Try frying them with the left over chips and curry sauce from your supper. If you happened to have passed the kebab shop on the way as well a bit of Chicken Tikka or donner adds a little extra kick.

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
There's very little ever left, in our house, but what bit there is is scraped off the plate into the waste bin and I still feel guilty, doing it. In my head I can hear a voice saying, "Don't throw that away. I'll take it off your hands if it's going spare", which is what Jet, or old dog, would have said, accompanied by an accusing look, if she'd been able to talk.
I have very little "sloppy" waste, what constitutes that? I use olive oil for frying but in such small quantities it's absorbed by the food and I haven't had a chip pan or deep-fat fryer for many years. If the pan is left with a residue I rinse it under hot water and I put Domestos down the sink regularly. I can't think of anything else that's sloppy apart from the milk that's sometimes left at the bottom of a cereal bowl. The more solid waste, what bit there is of it, goes in the bin and gets transferred to the wheelie bin in a tied plastic bin-liner. Uncooked vegetable waste goes in the compost bin. |

You might be eating trans fats - not good for you

The 'sloppy waste' which inspired the debate on the radio was Tony Livesey's left over breakfast cereal, with milk.

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Tony Livesey also asked how many people ate in the toilet? Seems pretty disgusting to me, but in the name of research I thought I'd give it a go.
Didn't really work out for me. The candelabra and napkin kept slipping round the u-bend. |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
eww how can anyone eat in the loo!!
just the thought knocks me sick! |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Im with you on that Panther.... eating in the loo.. ewww!!

Yes I thought that was the most disgusting thing ever. That Alison takes a brew into the loo! YUCK YUCK YUCK!

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
We eat lot's of leftovers and rarely have to throw any kind of food item in the trash. Grease and oil and fats get thrown out. Everything else is thrown into the compost pile or given to the chickens and guineas.
Have never heard of throwing anything into the toilet over here. I guess alot of folks have garbage disposals that grind it up and it goes into the septic system. We have a septic tank and putting food items in would cause us to have to pump it out more frequently. Brian |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Most of our left overs are given to our hens, found very little they won't eat.

It amazes me that people are disgusted by mothers breastfeeding. There is nothing disgusting about it. It's perfectly natural human behaviour but oddly somehow it has become almost on a par with pornography in this country. We are a weird lot aren't we? Quote:
My Grandad never used to throw anything away either - it all went to the pigs and chickens. Unfortunately we can't keep pigs and chickens in terraced houses. Maybe that town centre farm isn't a bad idea after all - except I think there's some rule now about not giving left over food to pigs and chickens. |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
The rabbits get any veg peelings but don't like leeks and spring onions! The guinea pig will eat virtually anything, I recommend one,bit like a miniature goat ! The cat is too damn fussy and will only eat cat food, unless you are having fried chicken. The rest of the waste goes in the bin if it's not recyclable; with leftover cereal I would pour milk down drain and tip rest in bin. Don't have a compost heap but my mum composts everything !
|
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
compost bin, bin, sink and drain outside is where all of mine goes.
Mind u the compost bin is getting full now and so it will all probably end up in the bin. |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Eat it, because if you don't your mummy will send it to the hungry little black children in Africa.

I was allways told to clear my plate because there were staving Armenians ,
bit of a sidebar ...does anyone remember the "sunshine children" during the 50s, children at the Parish primary school in Gt. Harwood were given tear-out books containing photos of african children whose faces were printed in the center of a sunflower (bit like Weed on Bill and Ben) and we were instruced to go and sell them for 6d each the proceeds going to missionaries in Africa , I remember being commended for selling the most and being called to the stage during a morning assembly , all went well until I told the gathered pupils and staff my secret .......outside the Royal pub at chucking out time  :cool:  |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
Not much food goes to waist in our house. Oil or liquid goes into an empty carton or bottle n put in the bin.
Nowt goes down the loo or sink. |

I remember being given booklets of pictures of smiling children to sell but they were just the children's faces, no sunflowers.
My Mum used to encourage me to eat by reminding me that there were people starving in Africa. I couldn't see the logic - how was me eating spinach going to stop them starving? |
Re: What do you do with your food waste?
most of our waste food goes inside sam .........my fat little dog .......not that there's much waste here .

I think it is disgusting that some water companies, based in seaside towns like Brighton, can still pump untreated sewerage straight into the sea.

yes all mine go in the bin as well and less the dog want,s it .

Re: What do you do with your food waste?
How can a bit of sloppy mash be regarded as more foul than human waste? If a loo can deal with poo surely it can deal with some squidgy spud. You never see mashed potato washed up on the beach do you? :D
I see their point about some of the things that people put down the loos as they will not get broken down but surely things like soggy breakfast cereal and sloppy mash will be practically disintegrated before they get round the U-bend. |
