Both of them ... but Elvis had such a powerful voice; remember these were the days before the massive banks of amps and speakers, you can see it in the early Beatles broadcasts too. It's the voice tho' ... there again Elvis came out of the gospel tradition, the same roots that Mahalia Jackson came from ... now there is a singer! If you have never heard her stuff, give it a listen ...

And don't forget Edith Piaf, Cleo Lane, and Peggy Lee

Never that keen on Cleo's scat, give me Ella Fitzgerald or Lady Day anytime.

Love Piaf and Ms. Jackson but I'd also add Bessie Smith, she was one bluesy Momma.

Still reckon Little Richard and Chuck Berry could out-rock Elvis anyday!

I don't accept that Elvis was one of the greatest singers, Roy Orbison was a much better singer than Elvis Presley (The Big O's version of Mean Woman Blues cannot be beaten). Buddy Holly - he was truly great.

Ok ... but do you remember the duet that he did with k. d. lang, that fantastic version of "Crying" ... I would say on that one k. d. had the more powerful voice.
