Power cut in Ossy

From 9 O'clock tonight until just now, I've been sitting here in the dark, couldn't watch telly, couldn't use the computer, couldn't even have a shower. I've been reading my book by a tea light! Damn power cut.

Makes you think what it must have been like before electricity.....awful.:(

It's just come back on now. Does anyone else in Ossy ( Garinda, Panther, Gayle) know what happened to make it go off?

slinky 12-03-2008 21:24

Re: Power cut in Ossy

I heard about this from My uncle. I came on here to see what might have happened.

My son said it was lightening earlier, I thought it could have been something to do with that, but maybe not.

All our lights dimmed for some 3 to 4 seconds around that time, the power stayed on though...Burnley Road area of Accy

Power went for about two seconds down here as well, it upset a lot of burglar alarms otherwise did a reboot, I used the time to make a brew.

Just thought it's Wednesday, that's the day rindy usually does his hair, Super deluxe Hair dryer on extra blow and his curling tongs plugged into the same socket, no wonder Ossy went dark.

On way home from Stanley I noticed power was off from Dill Hall lights (lights not working either) all the way to Henry St lights, all church was off, coming up Union Rd was OK till about the palladium then they were off from there up to the Ossy town hall area, top end of Ossy was Ok

Chris phoned United Utilities about half an hour ago to find out when the power would be back on and they said, probably about half six in the morning, then it came on about 10 minutes later.

Apparently it's in pockets all around Accy and Ossy - so not just over here.

Re: Power cut in Ossy

Hurrah!!!!

Light!

My friends in Gran Canaria called my mobile, my landline being down, and I told them we were having another power cut, the second since the earthquake. They killed themselves laughing, as they think the U.K. is now like Beirut. Come to think of it....

I was just playing the quiz, when total blackness descended. Luckily I managed to find my lighter, and then a candle, before making sure the lady next door was ok, and giving her a candle too.

I tried to find a battery radio I have, but gave up looking when wax was poured in my underwear drawer. So, unable to even read much by candlelight, I lay on the sofa, covered in a blanket, and remembered the power cuts of the seventies, when our house was the only one in Ossy with lights, and a portable television, thanks to the generator powered by a massive windmill my dad built on top of the garage.

Thanks to Neil for phoning to see if I was ok, and if I needed anything, and for happily informing me his house was ok.

Oh well, at least the house smells wonderfully of lavender and vanilla.

Damn, the lights are flickering, I'd better post this quick.

If it goes again, we should storm the Civic Theatre, and seek refuge.

I've printed off some Vera Lynn songs, and have a spare gas mask if anyone needs it.

And that is unusual for you because?

It was fun at the Area Council Meeting which was help in Rhyddings school. I would have thought the school would have emergency lighting. Is was a black as the ace of spades in their drama room or whatever the one with the tiered seating is called. On the bright side I did manage to acquire a pocket full of biscuits while the light were out :D:D:D

Hey, don't knock that Garinda !.. remember was doing 'Pyjama Game' at the Civic Theatre during the 4 hour power cuts .. 'course went during our show didn't it :( .. had to keep the audience entertained with 'Songs From The Shows' 'til they came back on .. just during my striptease number too (in the best possible taste of course) ... :D

Couple of power surges in Clayton .. nothing else. Word of warning .. listened to the dangers of t-lights in a programme the other day. Without going into detail of the tragidies that ensued ... THEY HAVE TO BE PUT IN A PROPER CANDLE HOLDER/NOT MEANT TO STAND ON THEIR OWN IN THAT TIN FOIL CONTAINER . BURNS THROUGH .. BEWARE :dflam::dflam:

Being a gentleman I offered Gayle a lift home but she declined.

Don't worry she would have been perfectly safe, as mentioned at the meeting the picnic area of Haslingdon old road is closed and will not reopen :rolleyes::D

I even phoned her to make sure she got home ok and see if she needed anything, like I did with you.

Off topic, sorry, but when it used to be open there was a plaque, naming the various hills visible from the panorama, and on the bottom it said who donated the land to be a picnic area, I think it named one of the Proctor farming family, if my memory serves me well.

I read the council now say they don't know who owns it, which is a load of rubbish, and more than a little frightening if true, and doesn't bode well for any other records H.B.C. are supposed to be keepin on our behalf.

Up until it's recent closure the bins were emptied by somebody from the Countryside Alliance.

I also find it hard to understand how the Council does not know who owns land in its Borough. Then again LCC are not sure either. It looks like it is owned by United Utilites but it would cost too much money to reopen it due to the constant problems up there. Fly tipping being one of them.

That's what they're trying to say. I doubt very much the land was given to the water authority by the farmer.

Yet again another amenity vanishes.

The same way Oswald House, at the bottom of Rhyddings Street, was given to the council, and which was used as a museum, before they sold it off.

Well, 'sort of Slinky .. :spank:

Sorry, serious hat on tonight .. really deaths have been caused by this practice, particularly amongst university students who think it is cool, but far from it .. very, very hot. This was the sad story that inspired the feature on Jeremy Vine's programme.

BBC NEWS | England | Beds/Bucks/Herts | Fire death mother in safety plea

Mine went off at about 8.50pm I was just sitting down to watch The Apprentice, and was even more worried that i'd miss Torchwood!!! lol.

Harry was petrified, it was quite amusing though because he was stood in the middle of the room when it went off and started trying to run around and I had to start trying to find him! We all jumped into the car and went up to my Dads on Bright Street it was fine up there.

The lights were on from Rhyddings Street upwards on Union Road. I don't know if there was something on at the Town Hall but there were loads of people stood outside when I was going up to my Dads. That must have been scary half way through a show and the lights go off, and you have to get down all them stairs!

Normally if your house lights fuse, there's still the glow from the street lights, but it really was pitch black last night.

I felt like Audrey Hepburn in 'Wait Until Dark', scambling around trying to get my bearings, and a lighter for the candles.:D

It was wasn't it.

All the street lights were out here and because we only have Foxhill Bank infront, there was no glow from anywhere.

After i'd rescued Harry from the middle of the room I nearly knocked myself out looking for my mobile to get the camera flash out!
