Or anyone else that might know!! But I have a sneaky suspicions that MR will know this one.

I have tried to wash my window frames, but they are not coming up as nice as I would like them to. Please could you give me any tips as to what to use on the plastic widow frame to get them lovely and white again??

Thanks in advance x

Sorry - can't offer anything new.
I use just a damp microfibre cloth on mine.
If they have gone yellow, it's just old age and pollution.
It happens to the best of us :D

Thats what happens to white plastic.
I have gradually replaced all my white/yellowed kitchen gadgets with steel, because they looked shabby.
They dont make things to last nice :(
Someone may have invented some toxic concoction that might work, but I don't know of it

Have you tried a bit of sugar soap slinks or even hot soapy water with a good bleach in .. Just a thought

MargaretR 22-05-2008 23:50

Re: F.A.O Margaret Rothwell

Before I stopped using bleach, I did once use it on a yellowed juice extractor.
It did seem to work at the time, but then it yellowed even more = risky

I have just been looking on t'internet.... and apparently you can buy like a pvc gloss for windows!!

entwisi 23-05-2008 04:50

Re: F.A.O Margaret Rothwell

You can buy PVC restorer from places like Home and Bargain. it works OK.

If its ground in crap you could try some T cut ( mild abrasive) but you would need to put a good polish on afterwards to seal it or they would get dirty very quickly. YOu should test this on an inconspicuous part first. It worked OK on one of mine but YMMV

Re: F.A.O Margaret Rothwell

Have you tried a strong solution of biological washing liquid?
Or toothpaste....I know that sounds daft, but if toothpaste cleans your teeth without rubbing off the enamel, then it might work for your frames and be a tag gentler than T-cut.
Tell us how you get on.

Re: F.A.O Margaret Rothwell

If it's not too bad try washing up liquid. Don't use bleach! It will remove the shine and they'll end up even worse. I've got some stuff called "tough and tender" if you'd like to give it a try. You can't buy it in the shops but I'm sort of an agent for the company Melaleuca. I use a lot of their stuff as I like it but I'm not into aggressively selling it but will order stuff for other people at cost price if they want.

Its simple, rip them out and put wood ones in. UPVC windows are rubbish.

Sounds a bit abrasive, thats probably why it works. Do they have fine scratches on them afterwards?

:p which ones teeth or windows:)

you only need to use a little for both but yes there may be a few scratches on them ( but would would see them on the window )

also the vanish paste you can get from the pound shop works... or neat bleach....

Re: F.A.O Margaret Rothwell

All my window frames are white UPVC and, apart from the kitchen ones and the French windows which I have renewed within the last 10 years, have been in situ for about 23 years. I noticed the bedroom windowsills, particularly, were looking a bit grey so I bought some special stuff from Kleen-eze that was supposed to clean them up. Don't waste your money on it - it doesn't work. In the end I used Flash with bleach. They're a bit less shiny now but you can't see that from the ground and they did come up a lot whiter.

At least you can paint wood window frames. Good wood ones will last longer and are a better heat insulator than plastic. Wood is more secure as well. The same goes for doors as well as windows.
