How Many Members Use Public Transport???

I have been reading and noting the posts about how much fuel prices are rising. It affects all of us but was just wondering how many members actually use public transport?? Have had no choice in the matter as I don't drive but must say I found it easier and not much slower to get to Blackpool Victoria than the new Royal Blackburn hospital.
If the transport was available how many would ditch their cars and use public transport?

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

I haven't learned to drive yet because public transport meets all my needs. I suppose I will eventually need to learn to drive for ease of getting around efficiently, but I still feel I'd use public transport as much as possible, especially for long distance travelling.

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

The problem with public transport services is that in bad weather they are unreliable....they don't start early enough to get those folk with an early start, to work......those folk who work late into the evening also have problems, because many buses have either stopped running or only run an hourly service....meaning long waits, in the dark, the cold and the wet. And if you are one fo the unfortunate folk who work weekends AND unsocial hours you often have to find alternative means to get to work.
Transport services are also damned expensive.

If the government really wanted to solve city congestion, they should have formulated a
public transpot infrastructure that made it reasonable both in time and cost for people to leave their cars at home.
Transport needs to be cheaper than car travel, reliable and timely....start early to catch the early workes(if necessary, put workers buses on ) and not stop at 8pm as some workers do not finish a shift until 10pm.
At present the barriers to this are the fact that fuel charges have rocketed and transport services are in the hands of comapanies whose main aim is to make a profit.

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

I don't drive because of my eyes so when Busman isn't around I depend on Shank's pony and public transport. Getting to the hospital in Blackburn is one of my pet peeves at the moment as there is only the one bus from Accy which gets you there too early and if you catch the same return it leaves too early too so you actually get about 1o minutes of visiting time after you've hiked down the mile long corridors! Yes, I know there is also a later bus and I'm planning on catching that one today as I am visiting two people.

In some cases public transport is easier than driving - I like to get the train to York for instance as I enjoy the journey and there's no hassle about parking when you get there. I think it works out far more expensive in the long run though. I know the buses don't run on thin air but 95p up to the top of Ormerod Street from the Accy Pals health centre is a bit steep - but on the other hand so is Ormerod Street! :D

8pm?? The Fern Gore bus stops at tea time!

Margaret Pilkington 25-06-2008 07:55

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

And while I am on the subject, many of the buses are dirty, because there are folk who believe it is Ok to sit with their feet on the seat. I recently challenged one young madam (who must've been all of 16) and she told me to 'go forth and multiply'......and often you are on the bus with loud mouthed individuals who thing nothing of effing and jeffing for the whole of the journey. It really does irritate me.

WillowTheWhisp 25-06-2008 07:58

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

And the noise of their mobile phone ring tones, 'personal music' (ie ipods with sound blasting so loud it deafens the whole darned bus)

I use public transport, most days, til the weekend, when the fella is off work
I will soon be using it a lot more when we move to Clayton!

Will then need it to get the kids to school, to get home from work, to go to town

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

If public transport was re-nationalised, the need to operate 'for profit' would be removed, and it would be able to provide services on non profitable routes and at non profitable times of day.

Any government subsidy needed would be offset by the reduction in car use, and all the benefits that would bring to quality of life in urban and city areas.

What a lovely utopian impression you have of our lords and masters. Reduce car use and therefore reduce taxes raised on fuel, reduce income from congestion charges and then add outgoings for subsidies for cheaper public transport? Can you really see our leaders doing that in the name of ecology?

Margaret Pilkington 25-06-2008 08:41

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

No, Willow...which really means that they don't care a jot about the global warming that they are forever going on about, and preserving non-renewable resources.
If they were really committed to these high ideals, then don't you think that someone would have some up with an ecologically friendly fuel to run machines?
What do you think gets in the way.....the vast muscle of the oil and petrochemical companies who would stand to lose by this.

'Our leaders' will eventually have no other option. We will eventually exhaust all this planet has by way of carbon fuels.

Then public transport powered by natural energy sources will be the only option.

Taxes to fund public services will change - loss of reveue from one source will be replaced with others - that is what government budgets do

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

Although I passed my driving test at seventeen, and drove my parent's cars when I was up here visiting, I didn't own my own car until I was thirty nine.

In London car ownership wasn't an option. Public transport was quicker and cheaper.

After the deregulation of the transport system, when profit was seen as more important than service, outside of London I found public transport expensive and unreliable.

I lost count of the amount of times I've been stood at Accrington station (the first train never stopped at Church/Oswaldtwistle,) and the train never arrived.

No tannoy announced explanation, and certainly never any staff to ask why the train hadn't appeared, and if the next one might make an appearance.

Unfortunately I think you'll find that there are bus routes in Accy which run at a loss and have to be subsidised or they wouldn't be there at all.

There is something very topsy turvey about life.

Until they sort out prices and service level I'll stick to my car.

As on a previous post, I think its disgraceful that a taxi can be just as cheap as a bus.

I've been to catch a bus once in about 20 years. It didn't even bother waiting for me to get to the bus stop so I ended up walking. They seem to think they can set off when they want, what happened to the customer comes first :D

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

One thing I don't get about buses:

When you are on the bus there's a notice which says for your own safety you must remain seated. When you want to get off you must ding the bell and remain seated until the bus comes to a halt. Try that and they'd sail right past your stop anyway! BUT if it is so important for your own safety that you don't stand up until the bus stops why the flippin nora do they set off as soon as you've got your ticket and before you get a chance to sit down? I've stopped trying to put my change back in my purse since one time the driver set off like a bat out of hell and propelled me to the rear of the vehicle where fortunately I was caught by Emzie!

Possible thats why people don't bother with public transport dave, and keep to their cars

People who don't have cars don't have a choice, so drivers should be made to consider the customers!!

Iv noticed more pensioners on the bus now, since they get free travel!

Well why not, leave the car at home...its cheaper.

And this would be the time when there was a shop on every street corner, where you could get most things an not be ripped off...when the supermarkets didn't buy huge out of the town sites.......OK...I know there are online facilities, but not everyone has access to them.
How does a mother with a couple of toddlers get her shopping home on the bus...is it practical...no of course it isn't...and that is why most people have a vehicle.
Work also has moved out of the towns, so you need transport ot get to a job, especially if that job includes weekend and unsocial hours working(as many of the service industries do) I used to spend 3 hours per day getting from Clayton to the Blackburn hospitals...and hour and a half at each end of the day......time I would have been happier to spend caring for my family. The public transport system isn't a service to rely on since it was privatised.....it runs for profit, not for the public.

Me and my Fiance use public transport all the time as neither of us can drive.
It can be infuriating at times but its a necessity for us ATM.
Hopefully Frank will be learning to drive shortly which will make life easier for us.

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

I havnt used public transport for about 8 months.
On a day to day basis it is not an option because of time and when I am travelling I usually have files and boxes with me.
I tried to get a train to London the last bank holiday but as it would have included 4 changes and an 8 hour journey I didn't go. (Now I will never get to see Tutankhamen)
Public transport needs to be re nationalised and returned to being a transport service, rather than just a money making venture (often for foreign countries eg Transdev) Also along the way the yobs need to be kicked off, (passengers not just the managers)

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

What a bad picture this is painting of our local public transport and a very unfair one IMO. I have been a regular user of public transport in the last few weeks and can vouch for the reliability and cleanliness of the buses I have used. Of course I realise for lots of Accyweb members public transport is not a viable option and I appreciate that. On the other hand for some members where public transport would suffice they will not even try it!!!

I always use public transport unless one of the family pick me up. Its quite handy having a bus stop outside the house not far to walk. Im lucky i live on a main route the buses start about 5.45 am and finish about 11.00pm and every 10 mins during the day and every half hour after 7pm.

Im not too keen on using buses, esp double deckers :o, refuse to sit upstairs lol always think they are gonna tip over hahaha , I know I know Im a clown :dummy2:lol but they really do scare me,:dummy2: I was fine when I was younger but its only since I learned to drive and ceased using buses

I will and do use the little buses on occasions though and tbh find them quite pleasant they re a lot better than they used to be;):)

Re: How Many Members Use Public Transport???

As I don't drive I do use feet and buses a lot but there's one instance where public transport isn't sensible for me and that is getting to our temple near Chorley. It takes about 20 minutes by car. It takes hours by buses counting the waiting time between buses and by the time I get there I have very little time to do anything before I have to set off to come back! It's also considerable more expensive than getting a lift off a friend with a car and sharing petrol costs.
