My hubby worked in a stockyard in Oz(attached to an abbattoir)...and he used to bring baby lambs home(mothers slaughtered...but lambs born).....he would rent them out to the neighbours to keep their grass short.....then they would go to the stockyard and they would be slaughtered and be divided up among the neighbours.
It sounds a cruel thing but it is the way it is.

I read somewhere, quite recently, that the majority of meat served in restaurants and sold through supermarkets is halal. That certainly backs up what you heard Willow. It was also a topic for discussion on Radio 4 recently too.

No, couldn't eat them. I used to work for a butcher many years ago, and one of the assistants used to have fresh black pudding(hot and steaming, freshly delivered by Tattersalls) with a good smear of picalilli.

Today I was talking to someone about how animals are slaughtered and she said that all abbatoirs in this country just stun the animal and then slit their throats and let them bleed to death.

I thought that was only the halal and kosher ways of slaughtering.

Does anyone have any first hand experience?

That's why some Muslims and Jews (I'm not 100% but I think it's mostly people of Jewish faith) who keep trying to object to the law in the UK that the animal must be stunned first. According to their belief, it should be slit whilst alive so that the heart continues to pump the blood out of the body.

I've also been told that this is one reason why pigs/pork is not eaten by muslims - apart from religious connotations the pig doesn't have a neck and so there is no way of slitting it's neck properly. I'm happy to be corrected if I've misunderstood.

Found this in wikipedia...;)
Qur'an prohibits pig consumption
One example of verses from the Qur'an on pig consumption:
Qur'an 16:115.
He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Qur'an 2:173.
He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful. Muslims consider the eating of pork to be forbidden, with a limited exception to avoid starvation. The Islamic taboo tends to come under scrutiny in places where it is not common, especially when it interferes with those who are unaware or do not follow it. In many cases, the prohibition is extended from consumption to the handling of pork products, creating issues in grocery, shipping, and restaurant environments.

You are right Cashy...I worked there for my stepfather when meat came off ration....I was fifteen at the time....many moons ago.
Cattle shot with captive bolt and then blead. Pigs, sheep and lambs and veal calves...stunned and blead.
All animals were led in individually from the attached pens.
