Whats happened to Accrington????
I grew up in this little town, as a child i would go with mum and dad shopping on a saturday...crossing the zebra crossing on broadway!! Shifters and the cinema...
Thursday nights at Lar de dars, sunday night starting off in Regency at 7, then late drinks in the Arcade bar...those were the days!!Even 5 years ago it was still busy but i went out last weekend and i was so shocked, apart from the Calder and Bridge, everywhere was dead!! Whats a single girls supposed to do?? 5 years in sunnier clims and i can't believe how things have changed...maybe its just cause i am getting old!! lol:D . |

There's little interest to make Accrington compete with Burnley in terms of both night life and shopping. |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
reasons i think it died was greed and stupidness...they put prices up and let any dick or harry in the pubs,no dress code, and most of them had dic++++ds on the doors who would just big it up with their mates and let them get away with murder do i go on?????

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Accy has been dying off slowly for years and so has ossy.
Ossy used to be fantastic on a sunday night till a few years back then it went like a ghost town . Sounds like accy has done the same . |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
I used to love coming up from London every month or so, and nightlife in Accy was buzzing.
Ok you might not bump into as many famous face up here, but it was cracking night out, especially Sunday. It is rubbish now, and like others have said, give Burnley a try Amanda. Better to spend money on a cab than watch the tumble weed blow down Church Street.:D |

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????

|
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Sorry but its just so depressing reading threads slagging accy off :( Maybe they have all lived in places so much better? i haven't.. I wouldnt want to live anywhere else to be perfectly honest :)

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
i have lived in much better places K-P, but still love accy, but if someone asks i just say as i see it.

It's disputed by no one that the nightlife in Accy has gone down the pan, compared with twenty, ten, or even just a couple of years ago. Even the pub/club owners will tell you that, after cashing up their dwindling takings. |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Preston Born, Leyland School, Back to Preston Then Blackburn Then C-L-M and finally Accy .. 20years in Accy and wild horses wouldnt get me out of here. It has faults yes.. But not as many as other places.. there is no shangrila... Nowt so much wrong with Accy believe you me.
In case your wondering... second bottle of white :) |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????

The risk of being glassed in the face is slightly lower too. As long as I don't look at the missus the wrong way, I'm safe, but even if not: She's a nurse, and will look after me just to keep the blood off the carpet. |

|
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Accy born and bred! Lived here all my life and although the town centre nightlife may have died out quite a bit (or be full of people you wouldnt want to socialise with) you can still have a good night out, a night is what you make it :D and with good company can be done almost anywhere.

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Yes Accrington's night life has died on it's feet but it is the same in many towns throughout the country. Pubs which used to be locals, with their own identity, have been turned into trendy bars with no soul, just conversation killing loud music. The town centre pubs all had loud music and the atmosphere in those places was fantastic. To some the pub crawl was an excuse to drink the entire town dry but to most, wandering around the pubs, was what you did.
There was some trouble around town but nowhere near the level that we see today. I wonder if one of the causes is the type of drinks which are available these days. Those alcopops, which could fuel a motorbike, are drunk in large quantities, people lose control and get into all sorts of scrapes. There are other violence inducing substances available too but alcohol alone can do more than it's share of damage. As for knocking your own town, that is something we Brits are very good at but we are wasting our time, the politicians are too busy protecting themselves from cross party snide attacks to take any notice of the electorate. :mosher: |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you all (fair enough I live in Ossy, but its all Hyndburn) Burnley is a far better night out, dont really shop much there, I have no need to as for £5-80 I can get a return to Manchester, and you cant get better shopping anywhere.
I even went to London last week it cost me £13 return! I'd do that every week! Why not!? Trust me the second I can get out of this place then I'll do it like a shot. Can't wait to move away! |

Dont agree with that though jaysay sorry, but everyones different. I lived in Cyprus for a year and getting away was tnhe best thing I ever did, I only came back because of family commitments (my brother was going in the army and i wanted to see him before he got posted anywhere.)
Its more difficult getting away now I have Harry, but I will do! Theres no nightlife, theres no shopping, theres no jobs, what the hell is there to keep me here? |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Burnley is crap for shopping, i ventured there a couple of weeks ago with my sister and we where walking around for ages trying to find a decent shop, Burnley is full of tat, maybe the dingles like it but i dont
|
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Have`nt been out in Accy for ages , i would`nt waste my hard earned cash.........bus/train to Manchester for a great day out shopping or a great day&night drinking and far safer too:rolleyes:

I agree with Lolly here to a certain point. I was born and bread in Ossy and wherever I ventured I always returned , It was like some kind of magnetic force that kept drawing me back there. NOT any more im affraid, Once my mother died I had no real need to stay in the area. Its not that I didnt like it at the time , I was and always will be proud of my roots but this last few years its gone a lot worse. When I moved Back over here for the 2nd time My kids finally rolled on at school mainly because they werent being asked to get heavily involed in multi cultural activities, they could finally study what they were supposed to be studying and school became a much happier place for them . Just wish Id have moved my kids schools at the beginning of thier education . However the folk of Ossy and accy IMO are the best in the world without a doubt, You get what you see with locals and to me and the way I was brought up is most important. |

With regards to shopping and daily consumerism - Burnley's market is better, the town centre has more high street shops, that massive Tesco is a country mile better than our asda, the cinema there isn't the sespit that ours is... etc. Accy has become a grimy little place, but it's home. |
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
So the concensus is that home is were the heart is regardless of how bad it gets?
|
Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Presume you wouldn't consider other pursuits like our History Societies, events at the Civic Theatre, programme for women's culture, Haworth art gallery, etc., etc., etc. LOL. We are not just one big nightclub entertainment here.

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????

It was warm, seats wide and comfy, sound was not penetrating my ear drums from all directions, and the films always come around in the end ... just not as many units that cinemas have in larger towns. Guess cinema seats may always be sticky these days 'cause of the popcorn, but didn't particularly notice this myself. |

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Ever been to Rawtenstall shopping? Don't bother. Accrington has a great shopping centre which I use often. Our precinct has a Post Office and an Ethel Austins, everything else is boarded up. As for night life, you might as well sit in Accy cemetry there's more life there. They filmed some scenes for that TV series (?Survivors) in our town centre and didn't have much to do to make it look like an abandoned ghost town. We do have a nice little market tho and a few nice but expensive shops on the main street. Don't knock Accy's shopping centre. If you do come to Rawtenstall will the last one out turn the lights off!!

Re: Whats happened to Accrington????
Must admit nights out arnt the same these days. Usually call in at Brooks Club on Fri or Sat, at least you know theres entertainment on, but some nights can be very quiet in there. The Abbey Pub is pretty decent and gets a few in at weekend, sometimes go the Arden too, but thats been quiet for a while. Stanhill WMC seems to do ok on Sats, but you have to put up with the dreaded Bingo!! Ive noticed that apart from the pub and clubs guide "the Entertainer" that places dont advertise anymore, if they've got anything on, or any special promotions, and the like. I'm sure its probably been suggested before, and i would'nt be sure the best way of going about it, but would it be at all possible to have a "Whats On" section started on Accyweb, perhaps for pubs and clubs to put their own information on, on a weekly basis, to let people know of current or forthcoming events. Perhaps each venue could have its own thread. Obviously that would mean letting each establishment know that this facility was available to them, perhaps via a leaflet. But long term it could prove beneficial to them, and obviously to all users of Accyweb, because we would always know in advance if anything was going on that we would like to see. I realise a lot of places probably wont keep things updated, but at least they'd be offered a chance this way, that would'nt cost owt, and their own fault if they did'nt take advantage of an offer like that!

....But no one who runs any of the Pubs/Clubs seems to be using it or even be aware of it, if they are told there is this facility it could prove beneficial to them and all Accy Web users!

Do like the Burnley cinema a little better though, just the ambiance like. Definitely a better night in the centre .. not sure why (used to be really rough) .. maybe because they have themed their pubs more .. dunno really. Strange The Bridge gets busy in Accy ... can't get any rougher or dirtier than that .. so just atmosphere or summat. Would love to see some lovely wine bars in the new proposed square, with small Bistros and outside covered areas with trellises and dangling vines where you could sit and have a drink in comfort. |
