The West of Scotland is said to be warm and wet, the East cool and dry.

You'll find palm trees grown there, but it's all relative. It'll still be cooler than the Gulf (of Mexico) from whence it came.:D I lived up there for three years, and usually found the best weather was in the late spring/early summer. If you go near the summer solstice in June, you'll have daylight for about twenty hours a day, if you go far enough up...and in the small towns and villages the pubs only close when you leave.:D |

The warmest place I have been to in Scotland, and definately one of the nicest, is a place called Wick, take all roads north and you get there eventually.

Re: Scotland
As to those famous west coast midges the size of dragon flies I am lucky I dont suffer from bites of them musnt taste nice. The West Highland way walk takes you through some cracking scenery and as it starts at Milngavieyou have about 100 miles to Fort William its worth it.

I found Scotland to be divided east/west, just as England has a north/south divide. The western folk are emotional, wet, and the east is more reserved, dry. Just like the weather. I love the whole of Scotland, but I never felt at home in the east. Mind you I thought north London was odd too, and could never have lived there either.:D |
Re: Scotland
i used to spend a lot of time in Oban on the west coast, and some days in July and August were really warm and sunny. There are palm trees growing there which made it feel like being abroad.
The rest of the year it was typical British weather!! |

Went to Largs for my honeymoon in 1978, it rained solidly for 7 days, think that should have been an omen of stormy weather ahead:D

He didnt pay his bar bill at Oil Can Harrys' and thanks to the heavies had to emigrate. Either that or he upset them by putting lemonade in the malt whiskey. |

There are lots of places you can sail to from there, and accommodation is plentiful, as there are lots of big Victorian houses on the front who do B & B. |

Everything from beautiful stretches of water (lochs) to hills, castles, islands ... could go on and on, but you will never be bored no matter where you choose for a holiday in Scotland. I love going through Glencoe, and had a holiday around Pitlochry ... was great. Driving along Loch Ness is exciting too. Maybe good idea to try the West Coast first as get the benefit of the coast as an addition. Quiet roads are an advantage. Think after you have passed Glasgow (Glasgow's great too though), just close your eyes and stick one of those needles you stick in other people and go for it. Although beautiful places in England and Wales ... it does have the feeling of another country .. magic. Eeew think I might come with ya'. |
Re: Scotland
When i was a kid mum & dad used to take me on holiday to scotland over easter. He'd just drive and wherever we ended up we'd find a b&b to stop in and then next day set off again. We always ended up at fort william though ... and drive up by the side of loch ness on the monday .. Stayed in Pitlochory - and saw the fish ladder they had there.
Mind you we were always in scotland - went to ireland from stranraer to larne every year ... |

Attachment 13657 Breathtaking. If you carry on to the end of this road, you will find Rannoch Station which takes you on a lovely train ride north. Think I ought to put my name down for Tourist Marketing ... :D |

Isle of Bute, you get the CalMac ferry from Wemyss Bay, just outside Largs, been a few times, lovely scenery, plenty to explore, would certainly go again. It's in the Gulf Stream so does get good weather now and then!:)
