Recycling Centre ...what are they doing?
 

Eight East Lancashire household waste centres earmarked for closure (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Lancashire County Council are looking to close 8 recycling centres in East Lancs ... and replacing them with 1 super recycling centre each for burnley, rossendale, hyndburn and pendle.

Those earmarked for the axe are centres in Langho, Padiham, Great Harwood, Burnley, Accrington, Haslingden, Bacup and Colne.

However at this stage council bosses are at the planning stage, and may decide not to close any sites, instead ‘rationing’ the centres’ work.


So where would they put the super recycling centre in hyndburn .. theyre saying no one should have to travel more than 5 miles ...

The one at Langho is usually very busy and it is a long way to the nearest one after that. Probably Clitheroe or Great Harwood.

I can see more fly tipping if they do close them.

Not normal household waste no. It is for bigger stuff like rubble or like me yesterday an old ironing board and a broken PC chair.

Ok ... just curious. We have a regular large item pick up ... the city comes and hauls it away .... just stick it out by the sidewalk, and what the scavengers and pack rats don't get, is taken away by a city truck. I pay taxes to the city; so, I don't expect to have to do the work myself.

I am horrified!! :idunno: My hubby works at one of these sites and he knows nothing about it...
He said there was some talk about it a while back but they were told it was all off. I can't get it....The newspaper report says the council are locked onto a contract with Australian firm Global Renewables....what has that to do with SITA then, the firm that pays the wages of the local attendants at the centres and collects all the skips?
I think it's awful that this is in the paper before the workers themselves have been told anything about it!
I also think it's a typical short sighted money-grabbing scheme that will result in more fly-tipping than ever! We already have an entire 3-piece suite dumped in our back alley..it will be even worse with less tips to get to...

.....And they were all told not so long ago that it was practically a 'reccession-proof' job as even if SITA moved on or did not win the contract, they would be still in jobs under the LCC....:mad:GRRRR I'm angry!

seem to remember when I clearing my Dads house , I called Hyndburn , explained the situation and what the stuff consisted of (Beds, Furniture, appliances, black plastic bags of clothes etc.) they told me to put the stuff in the backyard , they cleared the lot two days later . This was Gt. Harwood in 99 , the guys even took the mop bucket , great service was well worth the £10 tip .

yeah we usually end up having to take it ourselves by teh time the council have dropped it all over the streets .:rolleyes:
