Lost Pub
There was/is a small pub on Whalley Road Clayton.
Situated near Sparth Road. I spent many an hour in there, dominoes, darts, spud pie, with John Laing. Could someone give me any information of one or better still both. Lance |
Re: Lost Pub
Dunno how long you've been south of the equator, Lance...but Accy/Hyndburn now has lots of lost pubs. At a rough guess, we've lost at least 50% in the last 30 years. It may even be nearer to 75%. I can't remember the one up by Sparth Road, though.

Re: Lost Pub
If you mean The Lamb Inn, it's now been converted into flats - think that The Oddfellows a couple of doors up is still open though.
Only other one I know is The Royal Oak on Sparth Road itself - not sure but I think that's also closed & up for sale |

Re: Lost Pub
I'm just thinking of the pubs there are/used to be roughly from Church to Accy, along the line of Blackburn/Hyndburn Road. The ones marked with an * are now closed:
Commercial* Thorn X Guns Queens* Stag Wellington* Bridge Tanpits* Tanpits club* Oak Tree* Antley* Hyndburn* Miners* Palatine* Union* Last Orders (can't remember original name) One next door* (Globe?) Black Bull* Blockade* AEU club* Imperial 't'other one before it. Apollo.* Thats 16 closed/demolished out of 23, which I make 70%. It's a poor do for us drinkers. |

Aye, it's even grimmer - I forgot about the Crown. 17 out of 24 = 71%.
|
Re: Lost Pub
ya missed the "Big Crown" T, now gone, Railway still open, n Nags Head still open.:) then ya reached accys Commercial, dunno what called now? was regency last i knew. was also Horseshoe just down from nags, corner crawshaw st.
|
Re: Lost Pub
as ya included the union, king st club, blockade, palatine, old black bull are along that line also long gone.

I guess the Ossy list from the Black Dog to Church Commercial would be even worse. Ooops...I missed King St Club...so including that/excluding Apollo gives the same %. |

Re: Lost Pub
I think we all know the reasons...cheap supermarket booze..corner shop sales...all those inhabitants along Blackburn Road who have taken the pledge. Its such a dam shame...some fantastic Victorian and earlier architecture, now gone for good.

Re: Lost Pub
Yes you are correct with the remark about the thimbles.A few years ago i worked the amount out from the Commercial at Church to the Black Dog at the top of Ossy.In 1901 there were 33 pubs on the main road between and starting with a thimble full at the Commercial and doubling up at each pub (approx 143 thimbles to a pint) not so many would get past the Printers (14 pints drunk),then at the Golden Cross where you would be throwing a mere 57,000 pints down the neck. And when you finally reach the Black Dog 30 Million pints would be waiting.

Re: Lost Pub
Noticed the Royal at Clayton has re-opened and looks like the Forts is about to, as a gentleman was painting the outside yesterday. Have noticed lots of cars at night parked there, like a meeting was going on or summat.
All is not lost then. :) |

Re: Lost Pub
Was there a pub on the old Hynburn road just past the old bus depot back door?
I seem to remember the girl I married living very close to it and I think! the chap who ran it finished up with a couple of lorries. Memory plays tricks after all these years, it must be about 1969 I am talking about just after I moved from sunny Yorkshire. |
Re: Lost Pub
that was the union gremlin a Lions house, used to go out wi the daughter in 60s.
|
Re: Lost Pub
will try again. was the "Langs Arms" on Grant st, which ran Blackburn Rd to the Underground, used to pop in on friday nights until the "Miners" decided they were better without me custom.:D
|
Re: Lost Pub
That's the place I remember, The Union. Memory is not so bad after all, I just wish I could remember the name of the chap who had it about that time.
He died a year or two ago and his coffin travelled to the crem on the back of Alan Brierley's old lorry. |

Re: Lost Pub
Now you're talking! All regular ports of call for me. The Langs Arms was definitely on Grant Street almost opposite a row of red brick houses (which was unusual for Accy). Out of the house, through the underground and into the pub for a couple of early pints to set me up for a night on the town. The Union and the Palatine were cracking little pubs, too. Fancied a very attractive young lady who used to frequent the latter pub, but, alas, she was a dingle, so romance was out of the question. ;)
