Surely that is an abridged against?

Locally 'a gate' means 'said'.

She was agate, blah, blah, blah.

I recall using the word agait in a street game.
The words 'ged agait' was the signal for the game to start whereby we ran off and hid from the one who was 'it' and said it.

We understood it as 'get doing'/start
..which would explain why people asked
what are you agait? = what are you doing?
