Its not that long Eric since they outlawed asbestos, relatively speaking, I was using it in the late seventies, although there were directives to use masks when cutting it up, don't know exactly when it was outlawed must have been early eighties

There are several types of asbestos, its what is refered to as blue asbestos that's the killer, once used as pipe lagging, and insulation in walls and ceilings, but like every thing else its a knee jerk reaction, cement asbestos is relatively safe, its still available at some builders yards, mostly corrugated sheets.
I replaced my soil pipe last week, the old one was made from cement asbestos, went to the tip and they gave me some red coloured bags to put it in,
just smashed it up with a hammer and bagged it. At the tip they just threw the bags into a container.

see if theres a department in teh county council or somthing that can say if asbestos in your bedroom is safe .Incidently have hynburn homes used lead paint to decorate it woudlnt surprise me if they think asbestos is safe
