Asbestos removal : Directgov - Home and community
Your council can offer advice to residents and businesses on what to do if it is thought that asbestos may be present in a building. Inspectors may visit the premises to confirm the presence of asbestos and advise on procedures for removal and disposal

If it is identified as asbestos, be prepared for a large bill to get rid.
The precautions such as special masks and suits will make you think there has been a mini Chernobyl in your back yard.

just wondering , Has any research been done on how many thousands have died across the country from asbestosis, through living in the post war prefabs ,(probably same stuff as Yolandas shed roof) seems to me thousands of kids and their parent were exposed to the nasty stuff . How much has HBC paid out in damages for exposing its citizens to the nasty stuff ?

Its not that long Eric since they outlawed asbestos, relatively speaking, I was using it in the late seventies, although there were directives to use masks when cutting it up, don't know exactly when it was outlawed must have been early eighties

There are several types of asbestos, its what is refered to as blue asbestos thats the killer, once used as pipe lagging, and insulation in walls and ceilings, but like every thing else its a knee jerk reaction, cement asbestos is relatively safe, its still available at some builders yards, mostly corrugated sheets.
I replaced my soil pipe last week, the old one was made from cement asbestos, went to the tip and they gave me some red coloured bags to put it in,
just smashed it up with a hammer and bagged it. At the tip they just threw the bags into a container.

Retlaw.

I agree Retlaw, it was blue asbestos which I used mostly, don't know how asbestolux rated but there used to be loads of dust flew in the air when you were cutting it

oh with hyndburn homes they will say anyting is safe until you move out and then they will do what is needed, they told me i dint have a damp problem despite teh dam spreading down all my new decorating, rotten floorboards and rotting my new carpets and when i moved out within a week they were gutting the place repairing the roof and pulling up all the rotten floorboards upstairs.

contour housing own hyndburn homes and they are well renowned for been a cowboy outfit.

see if theres a department in teh county council or somthing that can say if asbestos in your bedroom is safe .Incidently have hynburn homes used lead paint to decorate it woudlnt surprise me if they think asbestos is safe

I actually don't think they would say it was safe if it wasn't accyman, asbestos becomes unstable when its moved or cut (smashed)
