Anyone Know What This Is Please?

1 Attachment(s)
I am trying to find out what the Mystery Article in the attached photograph is,

or what is it used for, can anyone help please?

So far everyone I have asked, have been unable to identify it, so I have decided to send it to everybody in my address list.

I think that it is probably fairly old (possibly approaching 100 years)

I think it could possibly be connected with craft work.

The frame is steel, painted black.

The two handle are made from hard wood and when rotated wind in the tapes which pass through slots in the black frame at either end.

There is a metal “D” ring on the end of each tape.

There is also a stopper fixed to the centre of the base, which can be lifted up, to stop the handles from rotating

Are you sure it's only six inches?

Hold it in your hand, so we can judge it's size better.

If your list is that old don't expect too many replies.

As for the object?

No idea.

With the shape of the, what look like rollers, must be something that's pliable, was thinking pastry, but the straps would get rather messed up

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

I have been looking at weaving and spinning gadgets, and early looms.
I think it is an attachment for something much bigger.
What you call 'handles' I see as spools.

PS there were gadgets named skeiners which came as attachments for spinning machines, although I haven't found one that looked like this.

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

I first thought it was something that I've seen before for winding wool but now I'm not so sure.

It could be something on a boat as a handle for winding the sails in or something like that.

DaveinGermany 14-07-2010 19:56

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

Don't think it's boats Gayle, I've done a little bit of sailing & never come across anything like this. Also it appears to wind in when the straps are pulled but with only about 3-4ft of movement plus its small size, I was thinking maybe some form of Harness, no doubt the Horsey types will have a better idea & correct me & my assumptions.

Gracie Fields sang a song about girls involved in a sequence of manufacturing processes which all ended up with making a thingymajig work. I think your object may be a thingymajig.

Or maybe it's a subtle joke perpetrated by someone's great grandfather !!

Could be some form of tensioning device, the bar then locks it in place. Are there any holes in the metal support for fixing to another object.

Retlaw.

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

I suspect it is a LazyKate-
In spinning, a lazy kate is a device used to hold one or more spools or bobbins in place while the yarn on them is manipulated. Typically, a lazy kate consists of multiple rods and come with bobbins that fit onto them. Tensioned lazy kates have a band that loops over the bobbins to prevent the spools from spinning freely. Lazy kates are used to ply yarn

the corset laces wind around the dowels when you pull on the 'D" rings :D

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

If it's for winding yarn etc. then surely the 'handles' would be easily removable - are they ?

It is nothing to do with horses. Not that i know of anyway. Showed it to my horse riding companion and she has never seen anything like it regarding horses either. :D

Then what happens when you give loose of the D rings to tie the knot, the lace ends are all tangled up on bobbins.

Those handles are the wrong shape for winding yarn.

Are they eck, any wool or cotton would slide sideways and get trapped in the pivot pins, all bobbins have a flange at the end, and straight bodies to stop the thread coming off, look at your sewing machine, and the thread holder that fits into the shuttle underneath. Bulloughs used to make all kinds of machines for handling cotton threads, and I never saw any bobbin or spool that shape.
That object has nowt to do with the wool or cotton industry. Its some sort of tensioning device.
Retlaw.

Re: Anyone Know What This Is Please?

I think it's probably some sort of tensioning device - possibly used in the textiles industry but maybe not.

The puzzle then is - why does the frame have no obvious means of securing it to a fixed point ?

So perhaps there may be a clue there - did she work in mills, was she a knitter, did she own a boat or a horse?
