Advice
Didn't know which section to put this in so here goes. If you look back over past years, (some of use have more to look back on than others) Can you say what piece of advice you have been given has helped you most on life's journey. I have no doubt at all what mine was, On the Sunday night before I was going to start work for the first time that Monday morning, as an Happyrentice Joiner at R. P. Townley's Burnley Road Acc. my Fathers said when you start work never be afraid yo ask if you don't know something, its far better to ask than to bungle your way through. That's something I always remember, plus another little gem never say "I know" ( especially when your learning) if you do nobody will tell you anything again
|
Re: Advice
Both my parents told us to hold our heads up high, and to remember we were as good, but no better, than anyone else.
Something I probably didn't do as a child. When after years of being called a puff, I'd try to keep a low profile as possible, so as to avoid further abuse. I found that useful advice, both personally, and whilst at work. Our parents certainly weren't boring goody goodies but have/had stong morals. We were told never to lie, speak out if you think something needs to be said, and remember what you were taught at Sunday school. Which I do, even though today I'm an atheist. |
Re: Advice
My mum always told me, if you can't afford it, don't buy it, save up, and thats what i've done my whole life, no debt at all in my house
|
Re: Advice
The best bit of advice I was ever given was....'Find something you enjoy doing, then get someone to pay you to do it'.
Work never seems that hard when you enjoy what you are doing. I have been given lots of other bits of advice along the way. 1) Live within your means. 2) Don't lend stuff that you want to get back....and never lend money. 3) don't borrow unless you are prepared to give back what you borrowed, plus a gift. 4) believe in yourself...you can do anything. 5) don't forget your old friends. 6) do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 7) Save for your old age. |
Re: Advice
Can't really pin it down to just one piece of advice as so many people have given me good advice through to this point in my life. But my earliest guidance would be that of my parents, remember we're family & look out for each other, be honest with yourself then you can be honest with others & always give as good as you get.
Pretty good points as far as I'm concerned. |

My mum used to infuriate me by saying "Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are" Funny she only said it when I brought someone hope that she had doubts about!! Another one was 'Don't speak until you are spoken to' THis has unforyunately earned me the reputation of being a rather 'cold' English lady over here! |

Re: Advice
Best advice I was given, be yourself and dont change who you are just to please people. If people dont like you just for you, they aint worth bothering with. I wear the clothes I like, have facial piercings cos I like them. Anybody who doesnt like them, they got the problem, not me

Re: Advice
Last night, going to bed, there was a rather nasty looking, but drowsy http://planetsmilies.net/animal-smiley-4915.gif crawling around the bathroom floor. The thought that I may have got up in the middle of the night to go to the loo, and trodden on the nasty creature, gives me cold sweats ...brrrrrr.

Re: Advice
I've been given plenty of advice over the years, much of which I'm thankful to say I didn't take, particularly when it came to romance.
My nana told me never to put all my eggs in one basket and never to wash cotton with taffeta, the former having been of most use to me. Whilst the old Latin phrase carpe deum isn't a bad ideology but I taken the biggest inspiration from my own family motto: non nabis salum (not for ourselves alone). There are other variations from American Moss families and also those from Norfolk and Kent but the Lancashire original is the one which provides a good life ethic and one I am trying to embody as a councillor. |
Re: Advice
When i embarked on the self employed part of my life in the pub trade i had never ever worked for myself before and a chappy from Huncoat said to me "you will get alsorts of people giving you alsorts of advice" but my advise to if you only remember this little one is "give a little and you will get a hell of alot back" and i always remenber this doing something for nothing quite often brings you alsorts back

It's a shame you didn't get advice on spelling, grammer and punctuation, as it's terrible, almost non existent. It's as bad in your emails. Maybe you need to get yourself a secretary! |

No, I am not trying to score cheap political points, it's only the Tories that do that. I am trying to make a point that someone who runs a Recruitment Business, and can assess the suitability of candidates, has such a poor grasp of English himself. Shouldn't they be setting an example? |

And yes, I would criticise any other Councillor, regardless of party, if their posts were as badly written as all his. This poor grasp of grammar, punctuation etc, also extends to his emails replies too. |

Being dyslexic never really held back Richard Branson's success in the world of business. He just got on with actually doing things, and probably employed an anally retentive nelly, whose spelling and grammar was equal to that of a robot, to do all the boring things, like writing. |
Re: Advice
My hubby is dyslexic and has a job where he brings his paperwork home and I do it for hlm. I must be his anally retentive nelly:rofl38::rofl38::rofl38::rofl38:

2. People's should be peoples', being plural. 3. Councillor shouldn't be capitalised, seeing as it refers to councillors in general. 4. You should never start a sentence, or a paragraph with 'and'. 5. Etc. should really have a full stop after it, being an abbreviation. Other than that, spot on. Next time we have a vacancy for an anally retentive nelly, we will consider your application. ;) |

Re: Advice
Seeing as this is supposed to be an advice thread imparting words of wisdom how about this particular little Gem ? :)
“Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.” Benjamin Franklin Sadly not one that some take heed of, even I am not impartial to this folly on occasion. So let's lighten up on the issue of spelling shall we or it'll only come back quietly, with it's mates, in the dark, when least expected & give us a slap round the back of the head to remind us that we too are not perfect. |
Re: Advice
I agree with that sentiment......we are not in an English grammar class, as long as we get across the point we are trying to make.
I'm sure that I am not the only one who, in the heat of the moment, whilst trying to make a point, my english lessons(which were a darn long time ago) fly right out of my head........and rules(well some of them) are meant to be broken. |
Re: Advice
Never do anything you wouldn't eat.
And in Canada: for six months of the year, if you are outside, don't lick metal. Don't pet bear cubs if mom is around. (Theirs, not yours.) Never drink lite beer. Don't criticize folks' grammar and spelling, like in "Hey Ken, that should be "carpe diem";):D |
