thanx Ian, my dad has his eye on one in Blackburn at the moment, if we haven't picked the one up from your mate tomorrow then my dad will already have one, thankyou so so much for sorting it out for me, it is very much appreciated

The problem there shaz, as I see it, is that your dad is using a right handed tin opener, maybe the chap who made the drum put the lid on with a right handed "putter oner" so you need a left handed "taker offer" to remove it.

This forum is getting me as daft as of some of you.

DON'T use an angle grinder, any residual fumes inside that drum could ignite from the sparks.

it was oil , so angle grinder will be ok ,
