Oil Drum

Where will i get an old oil drum from? I desperately need one to burn a heck of a lot of brambles and twigs and bushes that i've chopped down in the garden, if i don't get rid of them Twin Valley will be on my case, any suggestions welcome

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

Try a local garage workshop Shaz, but to be honest I think you'll be hard pushed to find much with scrap metal prices as they are.

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

would an old galvanized metal bin not do just as well?
Not that I have one of those, but someone on here might just have one that they would lend you....the power of Accyweb is boundless.

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

I was on about one of those with my dad earlier Marg, he said they aren't as thick as an oil drum and with the heat wouldn't last long, they sell them for £20 in Wilkinsons, i was going to get one until he changed my mind

Margaret Pilkington 14-03-2011 14:12

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

but if someone has one of the old ones..... which we did until it was pinched by the itinerant metal collectors...they were quite thick and we used to burn stuff in ours......failing that it looks like you are going to have to build a brick one :)

Oooo i'd never thought of building a brick one, anyone want to offer to build one for me? :D

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

Shaz it doesn't need to be built properly, just stack the bricks making sure there are some air gaps....if you know what I mean...sort of offset the bricks so that it isn't a solid wall.......your brambles will burn a treat.

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

The problem there shaz, as I see it, is that your dad is using a right handed tin opener, maybe the chap who made the drum put the lid on with a right handed "putter oner" so you need a left handed "taker offer" to remove it.

This forum is getting me as daft as of some of you.

Re: WANTED Oil Drum

Your Dad's going to have to go at it with an angle grinder I think Shaz. :)

Good photos, raised a smile.

DON'T use an angle grinder, any residual fumes inside that drum could ignite from the sparks.

Its quite obvious you haven't read the rules before you joined Gremlin, it clearly states you have to be a sandwich short of a picnic to become a member:D

Re: Oil Drum

I would still err on the cautious Shaz, a friend of mine was killed using a grinder to cut the top off an oil drum, I dont know what kind of oil was in the drum, but it set him on fire and he died from the injuries, his name was Steve Walsh and he owned Auto rescue in Bury, Im not trying to be morbid, just asking you be careful! :D

I totally agree Derek,
I spent thirty years in the chemical and hazardous liquid business driving tankers.
We had to attend many courses on safety and pass C&G exams.
It was stressed most strongly that you never allowed a naked flame, heat or spark to any enclosed vessel which had contained a flammable liquid. Even the most friendly liquids such as heavy oil can give off flammable gases when heated. Practical demonstrations were done using small models in laboratory setting with the utmost of safety.

Take care.

Gordon Booth 16-03-2011 20:39

Re: Oil Drum

Strongly agree with derekgas and Gremlin. Don't use a grinder on a drum that has had oil in it, Shaz! Even motor oil gives off volatile fumes which will ignite when mixed with air and exposed to a spark. The amount of gas in an oil drum would give one hell of a bang and you'd be right on top of a steel drum exploding! Think what happened to the Japanese nuclear power station buildings-same problem.
Don't know what the others think but if you filled it full of water (to get rid of the gas and oil first) I think it would then be safe to cut.Just don't let the water get on the grinder or you have another dangerous problem.

Re: Oil Drum

Personally , I would have used a drill to make a hole , then a jigsaw with a metal cutter in it . Shaz got it at 10.44 so it must have a very large hole in it by now !

Re: Oil Drum

use a cold chisel and a lump hammer , ideal project for a young lad and his mates, fill it with water first to stableize it and cut down on the noise ;)

flashy 16-03-2011 21:33

Re: Oil Drum

lol David, we got it home, i put it in the garden, hid it from 'scrappers' and just left it, going to have a go at it tomorrow at some point if the weather is ok

SJ, Reece's mates would end up rolling it down the street whilst one of them was in it, i daren't let them loose on it, reckon i'd better do it myself

sorry , missed your post .... anyway its good training for a sprog , good for teaching hand/eye co-ordination, the fun part is using a 1/16" drill to open up your first blackened finger nail, though these days it would probably be classed as child cruelty and require a hard hat, ear muffs, steel toe cap boots and a respirator . :D :D

Re: Oil Drum

Shaz I burnt some of my brambles and over growth from the garden the other day but was told by my Dad to ring the Fire Stn first to let them know I was having a "controlled" fire.

They appreciated my call and told me in future to call if I was having any more just incase a neighbour in the surrounding area called them out.

flashy 18-03-2011 05:33

Re: Oil Drum

Thanx Heth, it will be controlled, when i attempt to get the top off this bin, i only have one neighbour, i doubt he will ring the fire brigade, he's the old chap in the photo's, mi dad ;)
