is there a cut off time for putting deposits in?

i put some money in pauls account to pay a bill on monday and paid the bill, hes had a look this morning and it says the money went in on tuesday instead and made him over drawn. the money was put in at 3.48pm, ive got the reciept so im wondering before we take the reciept in to show them the money was there, did i put it in too late? im with santander and the money goes straight in the account when you put money in over the counter :confused:

It used to be that deposits made after 3.30pm were processed the next day but I would have thought that would have changed by now with the banks opening longer.
