Plinths on accy market hall
I was stood on the bus station the other day outside the papershop and i looked over at the top of the market hall and saw they have a few plinths up there, what where they used for and has anything ever been on the top of them?
I've tried to search for it on here but couldn't find anything |

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
It makes me wonder of they were once chimneys that have been capped off.
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
On a totally different note, today when we went into town we walked under the viaduct and there were men there cutting down mature trees and ripping up the shrubbery.
I looks like this area is going to have some sort of cobblestone barrier and great lumps of stone set in earth. It really grieves me to see the destruction of mature trees. They are a habitat for the birds and they soften the sharp lines that buildings make. I thought thecouncil were short of money...yet here they are, fixing something that wasn't broken. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I always thought they were chimneys or ventilation ducts or similar. In the photo with the bus the second one from the left appears to have a chimney coming out of the top.
That coloured photo shows just how awful that new market structure is and how it detracts from the old building. I can hardly bear to look at it. |

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
From English Heritage:
Market house, 1868, by J.F. Doyle. Ashlar, 3-span roof of slate and glass supported on iron frame. Wide rectangular plan, gable to road. Two storeys. Robust 9-bay symmetrical facade in ornate Renaissance style: Corinthian pilasters to ends and centre, flanking blind arcading with cornice and balustraded parapet. The centre 3 bays are treated as a Triumphal Arch with round-headed doorway (a bull's head on the keystone), and ornate panelled attic which has a clockface between cherubs with cornucopias and carries on each side sculptured groups of figures with agricultural produce; the flanking walls each have a central door, sashed ground floor windows and circular 1st floor windows. Side walls have coupled sashes and 1st floor lunettes, tall chimneys on the parapet, and a pedimented entrance in the centre. Interior: 7-bay nave and aisle arcade of slim iron columns supporting slender roof trusses with tie-rods; balcony round all sides (carrying offices). History: built by Local Board of Health. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
It is the most beautiful market hall I've ever seen in this country.
The magnificant frontage used to fascinate me as a child. It was terrible when the statuary was taken down for a couple of years, to be cleaned and repaired. I was so glad when they came back. I would have hunted in every councillor's garden, until they were found. :D |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Shame it isn't as well used as it used to be -always remember the market heaving on a Saturday, inside and out.
The biggest shame of all, looking at the old photos is that you don't get such a good view of a really impressive building it is because of all the cheap, nasty outside stalls blocking the entrance and side. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
The Old Piece Hall in Halifax is a very impressive and well used building, quite a thriving place when I went there a few years ago. Think it was the original wool market for the town...
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Thanx you lot, i don't know why i'd never noticed them before
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
From memory, the design of the Burnley Market Hall is (was?) very similar.
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Here's Burnley, Bob - similar chimneys and arched windows but not nearly as pretty as Accy at the front.
Burnley Market Hall I think Gary is right - Accy is the most beautiful market hall in the country. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
The plinths used to have busts of PB on them otherwise known as gargoyles:D:D
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
There is only one thing wrong with that WM....gargoyles are nicer looking than PB!

Might just do a bus ride one day on my own........I would really enjoy that.

My best bus ride was Lancaster to Keswick and back, 3 hrs each way through the Lakes, all for 50p each way - that was before the bus pass was totally free. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
My best bus ride was when I was eighteen, half-way back from Malham Tarn to Skipton.
Was helping my friend Jacqui prepare for her Dof E Gold Award and we'd been walking with massive backpacks and camping all weekend. That bus was like an Oasis in the desert when it appeared! Was a great weekend though -mid-august and we lay with our heads outside the tent watching shooting stars at two in the morning!:) |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I go off on the bus to Manchester sometimes with my camera and just enough money to buy lunch and a drink...that is so that I cannot be seduced by the shops.
I love the architecture of the old buildings in the city. |

A place I love is Santa Cruz in Tenerife, amazing mix of modern and colonial -if I lived on Tenerife I'd be there every week -my mum, who lives on the Island just doesn't get my enthusiasm, only ever goes if I insist -you and your camera would have a field day Margaret! In the UK and not to far from you is Liverpool -am revisiting it virtually at the moment, after being student there in the 80's -fantastic place -think you'd like it if you've never been...:) |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I have never been to Liverpool, but I am sure it has similar architecture to Manchester...after all they are both towns that were forged by industry and commerce.
(I lied - I have been to Liverpool, but only once to a study day at one of the hospitals there....it was November ...dark when we landed, and dark and foggy when we were driving home). I think there are many places in the Uk that are under-rated for their character and their beauty. I like Leeds.....not what some would consider beautiful, but full of character. |

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I haven't been back in 25 years but i believe it is better now than when i lived there because of all the re-generation -except for the Garden Festival site of '84 which has been left to go to rack and ruin -though there are plans for regenerating it.
A friend of mine went the other weekend, with my god-daughter who is 9, and she said they had a fantastic day out. They went to the docks to visit HMS Liverpool where her brother had served as a sailor many years ago -it is being de-commissioned apparently. Liverpool is full of stunning buildings and offers great galleries theatres and shopping. Stick your fingers in your ears and give it another go Sue! |

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
The Garden Festival site has been partly restored (some of it's going to be residential) and is open I believe.
Visited Liverpool a few times recently- quite impressed, I believe its much better than it was before Liverpool 1 was built. The accent does grate a bit, though! |

a vibrant new community with over 1,300 new homes across 26 residential blocks... I hate it when they use the word community in a context like this - a community as to develop not be created from scratch. Granted the buildings of Liverpool One look nice but I'm not really interested in another shopping destination... yes this is a woman saying this, pick yourself up off the floor! I've been to too many already - Trafford centre, Bull Ring Birmingham, Touchwood Solihull, Merry Hill Dudley, Meadowhall Sheffield... And it's taken trade away from other parts of the city centre. Glad someone agrees with me about the accent! I was rather sad when we visited in 2008 the year of City of Culture that the museum was only half finished and the pier head area was a building site. Bad timing, I thought. They were only just finishing off Liverpool One then too. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
If I went on a visit, I would take just enough money to buy a drink and a butty(or I might even take my own) and just my camera.......that way the shops don't draw me in.
|
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Quote:
It's not really that I'm tempted by the shops - it's the idea of shops as a destination that I don't like. Most of them in the big shopping centres are selling things people don't really need - and those folk will be back next week to buy even more non-essentials, then complain about their debts... it seems to be a way of life these days - must-have! By the way Margaret have you been to Liverpool and if so what are your thoughts on the city? |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I do, but I don't take it when I go out on my photographic expeditions.......I have an emergency 20 pound note in my camera bag, spare batteries and that's it.
I focus on what I have set out to do with my day...take pictures....Ihave been known to forego food in favour of taking pics when time is short(like on the coach trips). I haven't been to the city to look around...only to a study day at one of the hospitals there. I'm sure I would enjoy the architecture, and I could put up with accent to do that. |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Liverpool has always been one of me favourite citys in this country, Have been going since mid 60s, n before that wi parents, Love the scouse sense of humour n friendliness can't beat it, Compare that side of it to Manchester were i lived fer 18 months or so about 11 yrs back n its no contest.

We should have bought a load, when we were there as students in the early eighties. They were going for a pittance back then, and mainly used as student digs. Go for a bomb now Queen. (He said in his best scouse accent. Which he loves almost as much as the city itself, and it's people.) :D |

I had the best student digs in the whole city, wth breathtaking views of the Anglican catherdral. Though it was very expensive at £17.50 per week, when most of my friends were paying a tenner, to live in shared Georgian houses round the corner. I always had a taste for luxury. :D |

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Speaking as one said Scouser :D the L'Pool 1 complex now finished (admittedly it's mainly shops) but there's also Coffee places & cafes too. It also helps link the regenerated (Liverpool South) Docklands, Echo arena-Maritime Museum-Beatles Museum-Museum of Liverpool life etc into a more accessible unit whereas before you'd visit the Dock area then have to hike up over Paradise St/Hanover St & the rest of it to get to St.Johns (Liverpool Centre & North).
Plus as others have mentioned, the City Architecture is really quite special. Plus our 2 Cathedrals ;) our 2 Footy Stadia (3 if you count Tranmere Rovers :)), the cleaned up waterfront & historic buildings, the 3 graces spring to mind, one of the most iconic & recognised panoramas the world over, by the way ! Not just to us Scallies, but thousands of Immigrants & Migrants, American service men & Matelots from the World over. Can't you just tell I'm still fiercely loyal & proud of my heritage. :) |
Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I must make a bigger effort to get there with my camera.
It sounds like my kind of place. |

My day was long before yours and things change. We didn't have to go far to get a good education. Hence the green, goofy face thing, at the end of the post. Everyone knows 'my day', wasn't your day. Besides, might not have been true in the dim and distant past, or even today. But's it's a fact that 'in my day', all those who didn't get the offers they hoped for, ended up at Preston. I'm glad you had a nice time studying in Preston. I didn't even know Lucie Clayton had a charm school up there. :D (^ smiley.) ;) |
