Old sayings

When I was a child I lived with my Grand-parents,f I asked my grandma a question that she didn't want to answer,she would say "It's Hetty Kitesring from Bash"(Baxenden) I have tried over the years to find out where the saying came from,I can't really imagine grandma making it up,can anybody throw any light on it?

Perhaps it means 'I don't know and I don't care, stop bothering me you infernally precocious child'?

Can't help you on that one!
You've reminded me though-when I was young my Grandmother used to say something that I've never heard before or since.. Say if you had a gadget or toy that she thought wasn't any good she'd say ;
'Ah you don't want that-It's neither nowt nor sommat!'

What that meant I've no clue-but I carry on her legacy by still saying it. :)

If we had some cream we could have strawberries and cream, if we had some strawberries.

Re: Old sayings

If the grown ups were talking, and we asked who they were talking about it was always 'Icky, the fire bobby' or 'Lady Lace-Holes'....and if we asked what something was we were told it was 'lay o'ers fer meddlers, and crutches fer lame ducks'....if we asked how old a grown up was we were told 'as old as his tongue and younger than his teeth'.
I'm sure if I dredge my memory, I will think of more, but that's enough to be going on with.
