Malt Loaf, I love It.

I prefer it toasted, the problem is,

Whenever I try to slice it, it gels to itself and ends up a bit like bread pudding, very nice in it's own little way.

BUT, does anyone know a way of cutting it into toaster size lumps (can't call them slices) that would make decent toast.

I suspect the only way would be to take it out of it's wrapper, leave it to dry out for a fortnight then saw through the dehydrated remains with a hacksaw.

That's not how I want to eat it!

:o

I love malt loaf, used to eat them whole when I was a kid. As for cutting, a decent bread knife does the trick for us. Cut it like you are sawing a piece of wood.

Whoops, didn`t mean eat them whole as in one go, I`d eat just eat a full one, taking bites out of it rather than slicing.

You can buy it ready sliced

Ocado: Soreen Sliced Fruity Malt Loaf (Product Information)

It is larger than the old style malt loaf so fits in a toaster better.

Re: Malt Loaf, I love It.

Not as nice ready sliced, looses some of its moistness, Although not an issue I suppose if you`re toasting it.

Turn it on its side and cut it instead of from the top, it doesn't squish as much

I remember Virol malt extract from when I was a child - yummy stuff.

It is now being made again
Potter's Herbals Malt Extract

I think that is how us oldies got to love that malty taste - our dummies got dipped in it.

Perhaps you could supervise, or even do it for him. Maybe cut it into shapes.

At one time I had a malt loaf every weekend, but only occasionally these days, in fact I did have some only a fortnight ago, but I've never had it toasted

Now now Mr C you talk enough crap as it is, ther'd be no need to bulk up on some more. ;)

Malt loaf and BaraBrith are both good, but they are different...so a comparison is purely preferential.
I like them both equally.

Used to like it but gone off it. Never even thought ov toasting it. Sounds a bit wrong, sticking it in the toaster.

I am the only person in my faily who hates the stuff. My Texas-dwelling Aunt is over at the moment and first thing she asks us to stock when she's visiting is Malt Loaf lol :)

But yes I agree with the freezer method for slicing :)

Try it Anne, it adds to the flavour, mind you, I wouldn't suggest you try my other way of eating it.

Toasted with melted blue cheese on it, wow that is a mixture of flavours!

BUT SO GOOD.
:)

Well, here we go with my latest experiment, for a change my shopping trip went without incident.
Had a simplistic tea then decided I'd have some malt loaf (banana flavour).

Went to the fridge and discovered what I'd forgotten to get, No butter, not even a touch of I can't believe I was conned to buy this rather than butter!

Well, my gast was flabbered because I'd already sliced it into my usual squashed pieces, only one way to get some fat onto my slices yessss, I had fried malt loaf done in the fat from a couple of rashers of bacon, wow, as soon as the pieces hit the fat they expanded to normal size then, shrivelled to wonderfully crunchy mouthsize bites, but the taste??

Who cares what tomorrow brings, it really was something too delicious to describe.

:D

I hear that ones with worms in them are a better source of protein.

Making wire out of cheese is just silly and besides it's well off topic.

It's such a versatile food!

This evening I am using it to make bread and butter pudding.

Re: Malt Loaf, I love It.

You can try pushing it against a hard surface then slicing it with a serrated knife.

I do this to fresh uncut loaves (usually a tiger loaf) and put a wooden cutlery box against the microwave so its right where I want it then push the bread against it.

Stops the wobble back & forewards.

Well, have tried the toasted malt loaf today and surprisingly I found it tasted good. The crispiness when cooler definitely added to the taste. Will be having that again. :alright:
