Where is this?
This photograph has been posted on the Transport Worldwide forum and the members have been trying to establish where it was taken.
They say it was taken in Feb 1967 and the train was taking Manchester United supporters to Burnley. A few members have suggested Accrington but being a newcomer I can't remember the old station and lines. If it is Accrington and it is coming off the viaduct then it must be going back to Manchester. Does anybody have a definite yes or no whether it is Accrington? I doubt it. Thanks in advance for looking. |
Re: Where is this?
The photo has been attacked by gremlins, Gremlin.

Ooops, sorry, trying to make my dinner and post at the same time.
Obviously I am not very good at multi tasking. At least my jacket potato was good, and the Aussie white plonk even better. I did find out that Burnley didn't play Manchester United in February 1957 but they did on the 22 April that year and lost 2-0. |
Re: Where is this?
Could well be Accy Gremlin, looking at the arches

Re: Where is this?
Gremlin, can you please clarify whether it's supposed to have been taken in 1967 or 1957?
Didn't there used to be a footbridge from the Blackburn platform to the Manchester platform? It doesn't appear in the photo, though. |
Re: Where is this?
It says on the caption it was taken in February 1967 taking Manchester United supporters to Burnley.
The two chimneys just behind the engine looked at though they are on Blackburn Road between the arches and Town Hall so I think it rules out that the photo is of Accrington. Sorry I put 1957 in my second post. |

Re: Where is this?
when did they lift the line out of Accrington to Manchester?
There is a photo on this forum taken by one of our members dated 1967 and the rails to Manchester have gone. |

There must have been some changes, the picture of the signal box ( presumably the same one in Gremlins picture ) shows a line bending off somewhere, presumably the Todmorden line

Re: Where is this?
It is still a mystery to me, the line to Todmorden branches off a long way from Burnley Central station, just after Rose Grove.

It does go on to discuss Burnley :) |

Re: Where is this?
No way Accrington, too much industry on left, no footbridge, no station canopies.
There was no platform on south to west line as shown. |
Re: Where is this?
I have just spent an hour trawling through the remainder of my railway books and come across the original article and photograph.
The photograph depicts a special train (one of three) on the 18 March 1967 entering Top Bank station Burnley. The train hauled by Class 5 No. 44809 was special No. 1T80 and had left Liverpool at 11.10 AM. carnying football fans to watch the Match at Burnley. It appears that the original poster on the Transport Worldwide Forum had got his facts wrong about the date and football team. |
Re: Where is this?

Re: Where is this?
The curved bit of track cannot be the Tod line
|
Re: Where is this?
Looking at the 1890 map Burnley Central (Bank Top) had dozens of lines, sheds etc

Re: Where is this?

Well done.Just to tie the ribbons----
|
Re: Where is this?
What intrigues me is the tightness of the curve, it looks much too tight to be either Burnley or Accrington compared to how the viaducts and final approaches to both stations are depicted on my old maps.

Anyway, job sorted now, I have put the same information on the Transport Worldwide forum which is where I saw the photo in the first place. One poster had even said it was Lostock Hall. |
Re: Where is this?
In the late 60's a group of us as early teenagers used to go down Accy station on a Friday night to help load the parcels service and generally muck about down there. The single track didn't go beyond the end of Platform 1. The parcels train came in from Burnley and used to reverse out before heading on to Blackburn. Can't remember when they knocked the old booking hall down and built the shed on the other side but I think that brought the parcels service to an end.
