According to an article on the Internet it's an ancient form of martial art originating from Lancaster using fierce-looking black puddings, and beginning in 1611 it was for people to defend themselves against the Pendle witches. Well I guess that's one (very funny) explanation.

I thought "hecky thump" was a local phrase used in response to being surprised (usually used by the older generations).

You're quite right, AccyX. It is a phrase we old 'uns might use when we're surprised about summat, though since The Goodies made it 'famous' my kids use it on occasions. It's a North England expression, by heck it is.
