When Is Next Friday?
I had to make an appointment today (Monday), the receptionist told me 10.30 next Friday, So I said O.K. Friday the 30th July, No replied the receptionist NEXT Friday, August The 6th, Right said I, a week on Friday no she insisted next Friday is August the 6th, I was looking at a calendar and could see that in between now and Friday August the 6th was another Friday July the 30th however rather than rattle my brain any further I agreed to an appointment on AUG the 6th.
But which of us is correct? Is the next Friday next Friday (as I thought) or the Friday after as she insists. Am I getting older and easily confused or was this young lady mistaken? https://st2.depositphotos.com/383462...lding-head.jpg |
Re: When Is Next Friday?
I'm sorry to tell you but you are getting older - we all are. This does not need to be a problem but you do start to notice changes in the both the meaning of particular words and also their usage, but, I do not think this is the case here. I have always noticed some confusion in phrases like 'Friday week' with two conficting meanings being in use. I have however never noticed any regional or other correlation to explain this. Best to always use actual dates!

Re: When Is Next Friday?
Less...Next Friday in the next Friday that comes along.(which in this instance would have been July 30th.) So the young lady was wrong(and it is nothing to do with age..it is to do with logic...she has none)
The appointment you were being offered is a week on Friday. Next Friday means the next Friday that comes along...if you had been making this appointment this Friday.....then the receptionist would have been right....but she was wrong. |
Re: When Is Next Friday?
Sorry, I agree with the receptionist - I'd describe Friday 30th as 'this Friday' , Friday 6th to me would be next Friday or a week on Friday.

Re: When Is Next Friday?
I think the term ‘this Friday’ and ‘next Friday’ are interchangeable.
If the coming Friday is the ‘next’.....then it can also be termed ‘this’. You would not get mixed up if you said Friday, this week....or Friday next week...just best (as Hill Walker said) to clarify it with a date. It just shows how personal interpretation can lead to misunderstandings. |
When Is Next Friday?
Nothing to do with which is next, it’s whether it’s in the current week even if that day has passed. So the appointment was made for next Friday (Friday of next week) and it was made this Monday (yesterday).

I don’t think you want to go there Less.
It wasn’t an offer. |
Re: When Is Next Friday?
For me it has always been the following:
Next Friday is the next Friday in the same week. Friday week is the Friday of the next week. But I must say, that when I get an appointment, it is always by date, then there is no confusion. Cheers |

How the devil do you get the "doctors" appointment in the first place, unless it's a telephone appointment ? |
