Smoking
Ok the time has come for me to bite the bullet, as it were, and give up the weed. For two reasons really, the main reason is the cost, at nearly five pounds a packet this is getting ridiculous. The second reason has to do with work, it would be easier if I didn't smoke.
So, does anyone have any favoured methods of giving up or easing the agony? Please bear in mind that I have done gum and patches and medication all to little or no effect. If I can get over the first three days without giving in it will be plain sailing, it is just getting over that first three days. The incompetant and idle GP has ruled out the possibility of general anaesthetic on the grounds of cost. Any suggestions? |
Re: Smoking
I was thinking of a recommended product but there's no saying it will be any more effective than any of the others you've tried. Have you considered hypnosis?
I wish you luck. At least we can offer you moral support. I don't know about that 3 day thing. I've known someone get past the three days and still give in. I'd probably be hopeless if I had the problem. |
Re: Smoking
my son is using (under doctor supervision) the tablets zyban, which is at the minuet very effective for him , keeping fingers crossed.
|
Re: Smoking
Thanks Mez, but I think I will steer clear of Zyban after what it did to me the last time I tried it.
I have considered Hypnosis but I honestly cannot see it working. |
Re: Smoking
I can't afford it either, the doc told me l can't stop because of the drugs l'm on. For the first time l really want too try'[ l never have.]
My Dad tried everything, literally but only managed it when he retired @ 50, & only with will power, he was miserable for ten months, then he cracked it & was himself again, and happy. Two months after that he died of lung cancer. This isn't a put you off story, l saw what smoking can do to you, but @ the back of my mind l thought stopping smoking killed him, stupid l know, & l still smoke. But what worked for him was going cold turkey, & he had literally tried every cure from hypnosis to pins in his ears. Best of luck, write a journal? Can l have your ashtrays? |
Re: Smoking
Hey a-b, if you do find a method and it works, please pass it on, I agree its time to give it up.
On the work thing, yes I found it very difficult, its ok in summer standing outside, but no good in winter |
Re: Smoking
Hi I know someone who had acupuncture and they managed to stay off the fags for about 3 years, but started again. I gave over with sheer will power, which at the end of the day, you need no matter what help you use......personally I sailed through the first three week, then it hit me real bad...but apart from the odd drag, at that time, I stuck it out ...now some 8 or so years on I seldom think about them.
|
Re: Smoking
Ignore the cost and concentrate on your well being. Easy to say I know. But I say it because that`s what I did years ago. I was determined not to pay good money to kill myself.
|
Re: Smoking
I've never smoked so I can't offer any real help except Good Luck!
|
Re: Smoking
Thanks for the advice Chaps, Looks like it's going to have to be Cold Turkey.
I am intrigued about the journal idea, maybe I could use my Accyweb Blog? Be prepared for strong language and violent moodswings. You can expect the first entry tomorrow (tuesday). |

Re: Smoking
Every time you fancy a fag go out and take a challenging photo for us to guess the whereabouts of.
That will have two benefits. It will give you something else to think about and it will give the rest of us something to think about when you've posted it.:D |
Re: Smoking
Just give me time to have a fag while I try to think of ways to help you A-B.
:joint: |
Re: Smoking
Now that the weather is starting to brighten up a bit and the days are actually getting longer, taking reasonable pics is once again a possibility. So thanks for that suggestion Willow. At the last look I had about 15 million Ackers in the bank to give away, so you can expect some exacting puzzle pics with BIG PRIZES!

All the best A-B, never easy to do and it’s that that make it all the more rewarding when you succeed. I wish you peace and every success in your endevour. Willow I have seen your suggestion and have taken note, my apologies for repeating the very same suggestion elsewhere. :)

Re: Smoking
My girlfriend used to smoke 20 a day, we were driving along in the car and the budget announcement came over the radio that fags were going to go up, she said "Right thats it, no more smoking", and she just stopped, that was in 1984, she hasn't smoked from that day to this, without the use of pills potions or patches, just good old will power! Good luck Bob!

Re: Smoking
I had it easy - after 10 years smoking I gave up due to pregnancy. Every time I even smelt a ciggie after I was two months pregnant I threw up, so I couldn't smoke even if I wanted to. I haven't smoked for two years now - except in my dreams!
I remember an advert with John Cleese in it (I think) who said to mix some cig ends with water in a jar and every time you feel like a fag open the jar and smell it. It really does knock you sick and might help you give up up. Other than that - best of luck A-B! |

You should stay on topic you know, :) then you wouldn't have idiots asking you very personal question like this, pray tell what makes you smoke in your dreams? :o |

What I meant was that I have dreams where I quite literally just dream that I am smoking again. They are so realistic that I wake up feeling guilty as though I have had a cigarette and have to check my partners pack to see if I have been sleep smoking. |

Re: Smoking
Best of luck AB. I loved the inhalator for giving up, it gives you a good nicotine hit at the back of your throat, a bit like inhaling a fag. Of course, I'm going to have to give up again sometime....:D
|
Re: Smoking
How's it going A-b? Are you under more pressure, because you told us today's the day? Good luck, l'm sure we're all behind you.

Re: Smoking
From t'other channel (last posting 2 weeks ago):http://www.hyndburnlife.co.uk/hyndbu...mages/read.gif Quit Smoking
March 9 is National No Smoking Day and here on Hyndburn Life we have enlisted the help of a specialist nurse who will be going live online on our forum to offer advice and practical information to help people who want to stop smoking. Nicola Parkes is the Team Leader of the Quest Specialist Smoking Cessation Advisors which is part of the Hyndburn, and Ribble Valley Primary Care Trust. Nicola will be on-line on a specially dedicated Quit Smoking Forum on National No Smoking Day between 9.30am and 11am and will be able to answer all your questions. Yep. Well, I'm sure that's going to be a big success.....unless, of course, A-B makes a contribution. What you up to with this no-smoking lark, anyway A-B? |
Re: Smoking
Wish you all the best A-B,hypnotism worked for my ex mum in law. 2 sessions at £60 each, money well spent when you consider the cost of fags.
|
Re: Smoking
use willpower

Re: Smoking
Thank you all for the messages of support and advice. I am at once, humbled and tremendously bouyed-up. I particularly liked Pixies john Cleese idea and Entwisi's change of thinking idea. Today has been one of the longest I have had for quite some time, but here I am, 22 hours on and still going.
|
Re: Smoking
Oh A-B,you can most certainly do this, you are obviously a very strong character and have the wherewithall to occupy your mind elsewhere!
Keep at it,and as stvky said, the will power is the most important thing, you have got to want to stop! We are all with you! |
Re: Smoking
Good on you A-B.......I hope that with the support of the gang on here you will make it. My hubby gave up some 15 years ago......everytime he wanted a fag he would go for a brisk walk. He also saved all the money he would have spent on fags and bought himself a set of alloy wheels for his car......that was something he really wanted and couldn't afford while he was smoking.......so save your money and buy yourself something you would not have had if you hadn't given up. doing it for yourself is the best motivator(rather than being told you have to give up).

Re: Smoking
the good bit's when you can breath again.
|
Re: Smoking
And when you start to taste your food properly again.
And then when you "smell" a smoker and think - Oh my goodness...did I really smell THAT bad? Hang in there AB! |
Re: Smoking
I used to live with two smokers (my parents) and was so used to the smell that I didn't understand what people meant when they said they could smell a smoker a mile off.
Then they both gave up and gradually the air cleared and the house became fresher, their clothes and hair no longer had the odour of dead ashtray and I realised the difference. After that even when I just passed a smoker in the street I could smell that awful stale tobacco smell which I had never even realised existed previously. It's amazing how the brain can eliminate a smell from being recognised when it is a constantly familiar one. If nothing else A-b your nose will thank you for it. |
Re: Smoking
I can remember my dear old Dad smoking Capstan Full strength and when it was announced in a budget that they were going up from 2 shillings and threepence to half a crown he vowed he would give up......he said that at every budget and never ever managed until about the last year of his life.......he was diagnosed with lung cancer and promptly went out and bought a pack of fags.
|
Re: Smoking
I thought it was a bl***y silly thing to do, but ah well.....he said he enjoyed it.....and as there was not much life left he might as well do what he wanted.

Re: Smoking
That happened to me when I was pregnant. I could'nt stand the taste or the smell and just gave up. I stopped smoking for 10 month's then 2 weeks after I had had him, the cravings just returned with force and I started again, the cravings came back like I had never even stopped.
