All Saints

Anyone ... I was at All Saints from about 1951 to 1957 ... as one gets older the memories fade a little. Anyone out there help a Canadian fill in some holes in his past?

Eric Slater.

Hi I was at All saints, but i left a little after you (1981)

But what kind of holes did you want filling, i might know some bits of the place.. plus it`d be interesting to know what the place was like then compared to now.

Hope you get all your holes filled.

Names are holes. Faces, they are there, animated most of the time. Smells, sounds, textures, even the tastes of school dinners with the ubiqitous boiled cabbage. But the names, they escape; they probably live in some inefficient part of the memory.......And what was the place like: inkwells, blotting paper, papier mache, a gramaphone playing 78 rpm records for the obligatory dance class ..... a differnt world, eh. "Eh" is Canadian, eh.

Actually no ... just asked a couple of days ago ... and I remeber them all ... I know that John Stanley Collier went by Stan ... and damn there's the door bell, with my luck it's the JWs

Eric 28-03-2007 19:54

Re: All Saints

Sorry Kate .... it was the JWs, I managed to convince them I was a sunni muslim ... Thnks for the info. It's amazing how the names bring back the faces and even the voices. All four of them ... the only one I'm not 100% about is Judith ... were in my class from Kindergarten on. Or is it infant? Ah well, a rose etc. So you're ex would have been two years ahead of me. Who was he; I might have known him too. Eric Slater.

Are we talking about All Saint Primary in Clayton? I left there in 1972, Mr. Bradshaw was the headmaster then - lovely man. Also remember Mrs Booth, the sewing teacher, I was useless but she was very patient, so much so that is was a shock when I went to secondary school and was told repeatedly that I was useless :)

Bradshaw was a good guy. He started as head in '56 I believe.

Yes, he was Eric, was there during my children's days, but retired possibly around '91 ? Very approachable not like the one who took over from him .. always felt up his own kudos somehow, however, think he has done good things for the school, so may be a little unfair.

Wow, all those years ... is the school in the same old building? Do they still get those half days off for all kinds of church "stuff," do people still call it "All Sinners," and is ther honey still for tea?

Oh yes. And I think it was Miss Pilkington. She was nice, her sister who taught the top form was spawned in hell. Well almost. One thing that stands out, and I've no idea why, and my shrink is too stoned to elucidate, is that in the stormy season, the morning hymn was always for "those in peril on the sea." That and the chalk dust. Maybe senility is setting in.:) Hope so.

Re: All Saints

Mrs Scambler was still there when I started in 1965, she was one of my favourites. I also liked Mrs Bracewell, although she could be a bit scary, she always found time last thing on a Friday to tell us a story & pretended she shouldn't be doing it. She'd shut the classroom door, put her finger to her lips and whisper 'not a word to the vicar' :)

I was there late 50's early 60's and remember Mrs Scambler and Miss Pilkington. I think there were two Pilkington sisters, also used to teach in the Sunday School. Also remember Mrs Bracewell and Miss Burgoyne and Mr Vernon who taught the junior classes.

Does anyone remember the lady who often walked past the school fence singing The Beatles She Loves You, and Susan Maughan's I want to be Bobby's Girl.

Re: All Saints

Just found this thread. I left in 1968 and remember most of the teachers mentioned. Also Mrs Mason. She and her husband had the newsagents on Pickup Street. Mrs Bracewell made me join the school choir even though my dad said I couldn't sing. Always been grateful to her for that because from then on I've always enjoyed singing and been in a number of choirs.
