Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

Anyone who went to St Christopher's leave a message on here we may know each other! And we can share some funny stories about what we did when we were there!

I actually left in 1999 so if you were in my year definatley drop a line! But even if you just went there and it was years before or after the time I left lets see how different it was!

Thinking about it if you are a teacher there drop a line that would be funny! I bet you would have more than one funny story!

Hope you will enjoy chatting about this as much as I will!

See ya!

I was at St Christopher's between 1977 and 1982 and Beilby used to teach Maths when I was there.
The headmaster was Mr Jollies when I was there. Do the heads still wear the black gowns?

i went to st christophers after failing my 11plus .But we had to wait a year for it to be built and so went straight into year two. my favorite teacher was Mr Day the maths teacher i also remember Mr Rushton a form teacher. Mr Jolly the head Master seemed to be obsessed with not wearing highly polished wellington boots in school. i was a prefect and my best friend Heather Loveluck was head girl we stayed on to do our G C E s and left in 1964 i think.this is a photo of when i was in the netball team... does anyone remember way back then?

You was in the year above me. My older brother Dave Stevenson was Head Boy for a while. He was in the same year as Geoff Taylor. His sister was in my year Carol Taylor. I do remember quite a few guys in your year but the names dont come easy. Allan Moon, Tony McVey. I do remember Heather. I remember these guys from my year. Ian Spencer. His sister would have been in your year. Allan Dodd, Marjory Mosbey, Eileen Stanton, Eileen Kenyon, Eileen Seymore, Martin Shepard. Allan Greenwood. One girl who I went through the whole school with was called Marjory Hindle. We used to dance for the school at various different functions and every dance class throughout our 4 years there. Last time I saw her was at the christmas party 1961 when we had our last dance together. Nice girl. Often wonderd what happened to her. Think Rod Hill was with us that night.

Re: Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

I started there in 1961. I was in 1alpha and my first form teacher was Mrs Livesey, needlework teacher. I remember Jack Green, called everyone 'blossom', Mr Day, maths, Mrs Richards, deputy head, Mrs Thornton, Mr Boothe with his size ten slipper he kept on his desk. One time in the fourth year, a few of us were fed up of standing outside at lunch time, so my friend, Chris Riley [sadly passed away], decided to climb through the science room window and open the door to let us in. We then crept under the stage until it was time for the next lesson. How we weren't caught I have no idea. Some names, Helen Threlfall, Eileen Blezzard, Trish O'Connor, Marge Towneley, Geraldine Heys, Barbara Blank, Trevor Coulthurst, Derek Rimmington, Billy Moore, Pauline Taylor. Lots more I could go on forever. Happpy days.

I left in 77 i think so long ago lol. I remember Miss Brown the music teacher she would grab the boys by the ears but she was so short herself she would stand on a chair. I remember as well she knew how to chuck a piece of chalk across the room and hit her target.

I too went to Chrissies between 1964 and 1969. Mr Jolley head teacher, Neddy Riding woodwork, Mr Pilkington metalwork, Mrs Blezard music and Mrs Ilic English and a Mr Day maths who also had a good aim with the chalk. Have some very good times and some not so good. I believe I was in Dunstan form.

Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

Hi,

I went to St Chris's but left in 72 which is before your time.

Just for a laugh . . . I nearly killed Mr Gibson ( PE teacher ) when I set what was to become the town javelin record . . Which stood for twenty to thirty years I was once told. Yep . . When Gibson stood at the other end of the school field and said "throw it . . try to hit me " . . I bloody chucked it aiming for his head ! It worked . . Got the record and Gibson was always nice to me after that.

It is quite amazing that so many old Accringtonians highly value their youth in Accy . . Nice to read so many good stories from so many down to earth people who to this day . . Display no airs and graces.

I suppose it's accurate to reflect and say that "we were one of the last generations who were allowed to enjoy our youth " happy about that I must say.

If anyone else from Chris's is out there . . Send me a message sometime. Cheers . .

And just out of interest, following Outback Ozzy's post on 28-11-12, can anyone tell me how mr Riding got the nickname "Neddy"? I'm told it was because he used to take give one of his daughters a piggy back when out on the youth hostelling trips and Duke of Edinburgh long walks. Any suggestions? Thanks.

He got the name Neddy because his name was Riding. We started calling him Riding on a Donkey. Then he became Neddy as in an old horse.

I went to St Christophers from 1970 - 75 and loved every minute of it! Mr Jolley`s was the headmaster, Mr Walker deputy, and Mrs Ormerod headmistress. These are the teachers I recall when I started there, room 1 Mr Otter, room 2 Mrs Ilic, Room 3 was the RE teacher Mr ? cant recall, room 4 Miss Kenyon/Miss Cunningham, Room 5 Miss Brown, Room 6 Mr Stanley, Room 7 Mrs Ginn, Room 8 think was Mr Winkley, Room 9 Mr Williams maths, room 10 Mr Green, room 11 Miss Barnes, room 12 Domestic science teacher Mrs P? cant recall, room 13 Mr Riding, Room 14 Mr Lowe room 15 Mrs Livesey 16 Mr Williams science, room 17 Mr Phillips, room 18 Mr Manning, room 19 Mr Bradshaw, room 20 Mr Day, room 21 the science teach with the pump with a name on so if he hit one of the lads the name was imprinted on his backside! ?? Room 23 Mrs Wilson, there was also Mr Gibson, Mrs Parkinson, another female games teacher with dark hair Miss ? The Cocker building was opened just in time for our last year, we had a prefects room with a radio gram in it as a privilege! Used to listen to Tony Blackburn during breaks! My best friend was Susan Whalley and she was head girl. I still keep in touch with friends from school and have great memories of my time there. Jed Heath was in the year above me and I remember he got expelled on his last day for hanging a pair of knickers on cross on the stage - as Mr Jollies walked down the aisle of the hall for assembly the curtains opened to display the offending underwear - he was furious and ordered the curtains closed! This was one of Jeds many claims to fame!

I was there from 72 to 77, think I can fill in the gaps of teacher's names - the DS teacher was Mrs.Pope, the science teacher with the pump I think was Mr.Booth & if I remember rightly the other PE teacher was Mrs. McLean

Re: Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

I went there from 1979 -1984. Mr Jollys was the headmaster when I joined and Mr Roberts when I left.

I remember getting a rollicking from Mrs Ormerod (dep head) for rolling over the waistband of my skirt to make it shorter. She used to make us kneel on the floor and if our skirt didn't touch the floor we were in trouble.

Mr Manning and Mr Graves taught art both were so patient.

Mr Bielby - maths. He was so feared by the kids he made the child catcher in chatty chatty bang bang look like Pudsey bear.

I remember he never turned up to any of the parents evenings because he'd get lynched by the angry parents he was a crack shot with a board duster and a piece of chalk and would slam the desk lid down on your hands if you were rummaging around inside it when he was talking.

Mr Leaver was my maths teacher. Awwww bless him!
He used to carry a sized 12 white plimsole around with him with a sad face drawn on the sole in yellow chalk. If you got in trouble he walloped you on the backside with it and you had to walk round with a sad face on your arse. He was a lovely patient bloke though. I think I only saw him lose it once in 5 years.

Mrs Pope the cookery teacher. One time she was off sick and we were supposed to be making fairy cakes. Miss Martin stood in for her and told us we had to read quietly. We moaned so much she eventually gave in and let us make the fairy cakes giving us free rein of the food colours and flavours from Mrs Popes stock cupboard. BIG MISTAKE!

I made green Orange flavoured cakes with purple mint icing. They were revolting. Miss Martin was such a good sport. She tasted everyone's bakes and scored us far too generously.

On our last day someone cling filmed all of the toilets.
Tied a rope to the handle of the music room and the banister locking Miss Brown into her classroom
Set off stink bombs in the corridors and nailed a matching knickers and bra set to the cross outside the main entrance to the school.

I've often wondered how many times that cross has been decorated over the years.

Re: Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

Hi, I attended St Christophers around 1964-69. I have many happy memories of the school. Mr Jolleys was headmaster and I think Mrs Richards was headmistress but she unfortunately died I think of cancer. She was very particular about the correct school uniform for the girls and did not allow us to wear white knee socks in case they got splashed on the way to school. I also remember Mr Day, Mr Green, Mr Otter, Mrs Ilic, Mrs Livesey, Miss Simpson (PE) and Mr May who married Miss Simpson. I can't remember the name of the RE teacher who we used to call the Rockin Vicar - maybe someone will remember him.

Some of the girls I remember from my year are Lynn Bentley, Shirley Stephenson, Hazel Long, Margaret Mackay, Sheila Birtwistle, Linda Bramley and Barbara Hornsey, My memory on the boys is not so good I can recall Trevor Lingard, Barry Noon, Brian Scholes. I left the area in the early 70's and then moved to Australia in the mid 80's, and just recently had a fit of nostalgia so looked up the school website - it seems to have kept up its excellent reputation and also grown considerably since the early days.

I was there from 1958 to Christmas 1962, the teachers I can think of is H/Master Mr Jolly, Mrs Whiteside R/I, Mr Forrest, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Thornton, Mrs Richardson, Mr Day(Daddyday) MR Booth ,Mrs Richard, and Belcher, as we called the Depty head, we had one yard for the Girls and one for the Lads with only a white line between us, and if you stepped over that line it was the slipper,(plimsole), as I found out after stepping over the line, I was in 1D,2D,3D,4C WOW

Wonder what happened to my class mates ?

Re: Anyone Go to St. Christopher's C of E High?

Just found this thread / site kind of by accident; thought I'd post. I was at Chrissys' from 79- 84. Arrived mid-term because we'd moved house into the area. I only got in because Jollys sat 'on the bench' with my Grandmother and they were good friends. I'd never been to church in my life. It's not what you know it's who you know ;)

I really enjoyed my time there. I was a skinny little kid back then. Had some great school trips too, went to Switzerland in the first and second year, I've still got the photos somewhere.

I remember most of my teachers, Mr Greene for English, Mr Day for Maths, Mrs Craig for Chemistry, Ms Kenyon for French. My Grandfather taught Day and wasn't that impressed by his academic performance. He was actually one of the better teachers but that's not saying much. I don't blame them, it's the syllabus that was at fault, I could have learned more on Google in a week than I did my entire time at secondary school (not that we had Google back then).

I used to knock about with Ste Bradshaw (and have done ever since, albeit in a more adult and sporadic manner of late) and the musically flamboyant David Battersby, also Karate superstar Jason Clark, Marcus Stephenson (lived over the road from Jollys in Great Harwood), Graham Dobson, Chris Wildman, Stephen Duxbury and that bunch. I remember quite a few classmates such as Peter Fisken, Gareth Davies, Julian Hunt, Aleister Craig, Nicholas Howarth, Paul Seddon, etc. I only recall half a dozen or so girls' names because girls were frightening back then. They still are.

I remember eileen blezard, she went to the same primary school as me, (new lane), and in same class at st christophers in our final year, mr Day was our form master.
My best pal at school was ken heap.
David johnson was head boy and a very good goalkeeper, he signed for Blackpool f.c. when he left school, but a bad knee injury ended is career.
I remember mr Blackburn in my early years there, felt his size 13 pump a few times.
