Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I don't recognise anybody, but took great pleasure in looking at it - lads in weskits, braces, Fair Isle jumpers, - such a variety of dress reflecting their parents' choices & their purses. I would have felt at home on this photo which could even be late 40s.

My mother had the shop on Washington St, just before Plantation St, until we moved to Lonsdale St and I went to Spring Hill. |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
When did your mum have that shop Barrie? We lived across the back to the shop around 1958-66. The lady was called Essie and got most of my spending money.

Do you remember a lad further down your street called Keith (?) Entwhistle, and further down Washington St there was Christopher Firth and his sister Barbara? |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I remember Ian Entwhistle from down Percy St and a lad we called "sugar" but not any Firths. Tommy and Franny Franks lived on Cedar St and both went to St Annes.

I went to this school '57/61.I lived in Oswald st and remember essies and Healeys on the corner of Cedar st.Used to knock around with Terry Butterworth,Kevin Proctor, Phil Rose and a lad called Ian who lived on Spencer st.Assembly at school always started with classical music as the kids came from their classrooms.Mrs Barker I think took the younger children for lessons-she was nice, but Pilkington was a right b-stard.I was in the football team.I remember playing football on Bold st,between the old mill and Whitewell dairies, about 20 of us.If the ball went over the wall it would land in a pit full of broken bottles.....what a death trap.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I attended Benjamin Hargreaves around the same time. I don't recognise anyone but they do look familiar. I remember Andrew Evans, Phillip Mitchell, Margaret East, Brian Gunton, Linda Wilson.
|
I also attended Benjamin Hargreaves in the 50s I remember Margaret East,Linda Gorton Judith Glasson,Alan Smith David Smith ( who was no relation ) I also think Stephen Brown was in my class too.I remember Mrs Palk also the headmaster Mr Pilkington who wasn't very nice to me just because I was left handed. :( .
|
Andrew Evans was killed in the Falkland conflict so sad he was a lovely lad he used to play out with my friends and I after school have some great memories of those far off days.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Firstly, I have to say that I was really shocked to open this thread and see my mothers name before my eyes. I went to Benjis until 1988 and just caught the name, and was intrigued. Let me explain, I am Margaret Easts` son, and I certainly didn`t expect to see her name on the internet. When she went to Benjis she lived at New House cottage, right at the top of Sandy Lane, past Leemings pad.
Is think she is on this photograph, but I`m not too sure not having seen many early photos of my mum. Can anyone confirm which one she is? I`d hate to be wrong. Sadly, my mother died just over 2 years ago and the one thing I miss the most is talking about old Accrington. |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Your mum isn't on the photo she was too young I was in same class as your mum she was a playmate of mine...So sorry to hear she has passed away, she was a lovely lass.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I am in touch with a couple of lads called Glasson, likely the brother of a girl mentioned earlier
I want to trace a lad called John Wild, who went to Benji's, then the Grammar Schol and became a teacher. Now 71yrs old |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Bob - John Wild was a master at Merchant Taylors on the Wirral. He will now have retired, but they might be a starting point.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Was hoping to see my Dad Harry Jackson on the pic but after working it out he had left a couple of years before it was taken ;(
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I want to trace a lad called John Wild, who left Benjies in 1952 for the Grammar School. He became a teacher
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I seem to recall a lad called John Wild lived on Burnley Road, almost end of terrace before the Cemetery Pub?
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Thanks Bill. I don't know if it is him I have a way of checking - his address was in the Observer when he passed the scholarship
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Birth records indicate John E Wild
Probably left the area after Grammar, like many did at that time? |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
The John Wild you'rs looking for, Bob, is John David Wild. He lived in the Barnfield area. After AGS he went to Manchester University (French and Spanish). Merchant Taylors at Crosby may be your best bet. I think he retired from there.
I doubt he could translate the above! |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Thanks This is him I had no response from Merchant Taylors

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Sorry Ive been a bit slow on picking up on this. I was a friend of Margaret East. I lived at West Farm which is a long way up Sandy Lane. We passed Margaret's house on the way home and I have fond memories of her mum's(I presume your grandmother's) fruit cake. We later moved to the newsagents shop in plantation st. The last time I saw her was at an outing from the Ewbank factory where I worked as a student.
Sorry to hear that she had passed away. |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
hi, myself and two younger brothers went to Benjamin Hargreaves school, from about 1943/48, jenny lang was head mistress, gladys Arnett was mayoress of Accrington, and if I remember correctly mrs ratcliffe was a dinner lady, happy days
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Just over in England from where I live in France. I remember Margaret East well and used to play at New House - her mum used be be a dressmaker and made all my school dresses when I went to the High School. From New House they moved to Barnfield Street over the road from me. After Benjamin Hargreaves I went to the High School in form 1M - I think Margaret was in 3W - but only for a year when we moved to Bolton. Lost touch with her then but really saddened to here she had died.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I believe the seventh in from the left on the middle row is Frank Seery
|
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
Quote:
Frank Seery died many years ago. It could be said that he was not suited to Grammar School -or any school where discipline was imposed on the unruly. He was a rebellious lad. I liked him On leaving school I think he became a builder's labourer. (Harry Pilling and I were born in Rough Lee Maternity Home a day apart and our lives were in parallel for many years. We met up again at the house of a have a mutual friend one New Year's Eve at a party I didn't want to go to, but thoroughly enjoyed because we talked Accrington all night. . We met at a funeral yesterday.) |
Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I have this photo at home. I was Carol Frankland and am 2nd from left on front row. I married John Glasson who was at BH at the same time.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I remember Mrs Barkers class. We all had little beds to have a lie down after lunch. Then we would gather round her sat on the floor for a story before it was time for home. Lunch was taken in a big shed type building which we were walked to in pairs. I used to love school dinners, a proper hot dinner everyday followed by a pudding. I did'nt like frogspawn(sago) though. I also remember being taken out on nature walks where we would gather tadpoles from the pond behind the church.

Re: School Photo - Benjamin Hargreaves
I used to live on Plantation St next door to the old Coblers and then was Eddelstons grocers. As a child about 4 or 5 they would let me put tins on the shelves and paid me 1 shilling for my work. I must have been a right pain but they were always nice to me. I used to buy liqorice sticks in the herbalist (like wooden sticks) to chew on and would sometimes be sent there for senna pods for my dad. It had a bell on the door and sometimes you had to wait for ages for the shopkeeper to come through.
