5 Albion Yard
 

Hello,

I am new on here just today.

I spent many a good Christmas during my childhood at Willows Lane and Royd Street.

My Mother was born at Albion Yard, Clayton-le-Moors July 1920, whilst the family home was Argyle Street. This makes me think that Albion Yard was either a maternity unit or the home of a relative but, I can't find anything in the family history pointing towards it being a relative.

Anyone got any ideas?

For those of a certain age, my uncle, Tony Marsden ran a fish stall on Accrington Market most of his adult life. Does anyone remember him?

The Albion yard is at the back of the Albion pub Whalley road Clayton,as children we used to store bonfire wood in a tunnel under the pub which is quite a large building at the back.I can't be sure but I think there was a doorway under the tunnel which may have led to a house which was part of the pub. If you live local you could always have a look down. Look on Google Map it shows the yard but not in enough detail.

Also I think there was some house's in the yard with the backs to the main road.

Hello Steve and welcome. Can't help you with Albion Yard but I do recognise the name Tony Marsden. My grandad Bert Creasey ran the family fish business, I Creasey, on the fish market all his life until the end of the fifties. I remember seeing Tony's name but can't put a face to him sadly. You might find the attached pic of the fish market in the fifties interesting. Our stall was at the far end near the Town Hall and I remember going down on Good Friday with my grandad's dinner in a basket as he had to work on that day of course being fish.

I recall a large pet supplies store being there.
What you see in the photo is the side of it.

I think that may well be what it was called.
I do remember going in that store once but don't recall what I bought.

Haha beat me to it yet again Margaret. Your google finger must be faster than mine!

But does that poster mean the really old fish market as in the picture or the one built in the sixties which might be the old fish market in comparison to the most recent incarnation of the outside market - if you see what I mean?

Surely, Animal Magic was the store built as part of the "new" old fish market - ie the one built circa 1962. The one shown in the picture is the "old" old fish market from the 1950's.
