Woodnook Secondary

Hi Everybody
I'm big into genealogy and have tons of info on my family tree's but the other day I was thinking about my time at Woodnook Secondary school 1961-1965 and I could hardly remember any of my classmates so help me out here as my memory is fading fast where you at school in those years. I live in Ireland now so I see nothing to jog my memory. Barry Talbot is my name hope someone can remember.

Going back even further I lived at the back of you in the 50's up Huncoat, I lived in Sudal ave.....we used to knock around with each other. Other names to remember, Peter Ollet..Barry Oliver..Gillian Coulson...Julie Harris...Trevor Waring

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I went to Woodnook from 1958 to 1963,remember Barry Oliver and Peter Ollet well but not from school,I have lived in Huncoat since 1954 and remember Barry lived on Burnley Lane next door to his cousins Les, Derek and Wendy Oldham. Peter lived on what was known as "The Coop Row", on Station Road.
When I first attended Huncoat school at the age of seven, the teacher supposedly said "this is a new starter called Michael Hadfield, he is a tad shy so I want you all to look after him; I have been known as Taddy ever since, to those who are left from my own age group. (sadly diminishing).:(:(:(

Hello Stuart, Yes I remember Jack, You are right he lived, as we used to say, "over the lines" on Sudell Avenue. It used to be an estate of council houses until they were sold off by Hynburn council, I'm afraid I don't have any more information on him, lost track many years ago. Yours Taddy

I lived in Huncoat till '57....I remember Benny's sweet shop and getting the telegraph pink from newsagents for footie results. Other names I remember, Martin Whittaker, Bridget Swales, Jimmy Bowker, Sheila Goulding, Ray Bicombe. I used to play alot in Bluebell woods and up towards the canal. It sounds like when I started at Woodnook in '61 you were almost in your final year. I too played in the football team

I remember them all, except for Sheila Golding, (unless she was Bill Goldings daughter who lived on Within Grove estate) I worked with Bill at the Redac Brickyard.
I knew Ray Biscomes older brothers Billy and Peter very well, Bridget became a State Registered Nurse, Jimmy Bowker I believe joined the Guards regiment and was killed by a kick from one of their horses. Good to hear from you. Yours Taddy:):):)

Young lads can be cruel in giving nicknames. One Huncoat lad I remember was called
'Juggy', as his name was Titterington.

Sorry Steve, the lad who was killed by a horse in the guards was Brian Bowker not Jimmy Bowker. Brian was a mate of mine as schoolboys, he lived O,er lines as we used to say, on Enfield Road, Yours Taddy

Re: Woodnook Secondary

Brian and Jimmy Bowker lived opposite to us in Sudall ave Huncoat. My older sister Maureen (Brown) also went to Woodnook around the same time as Brian. I seem to recall Jimmy being a councillor or summat.
Getting back to Woodnook, the best teachers for me were Mrs Ashcroft (music)Mr Wade and Mr Gale (science)

Re: Woodnook Secondary

Hi Taddy.....Sheila Goulding lived on Sudall ave, and had an older sister who used to knock around with my older sister. Bridget Swales lived at the top of Fish lane, opposite the school.I vaguely remember one year '56/'57 the school did The Student Prince and me and Bridget had to kiss on stage.......got ribbed for weeks, and the rumour was we were going steady. We would have been about 6/7yrs old. I also remember Peter Ollet had a chicken coop (probable his fathers) at the side of Fish lane. Used to give me eggs now and then

Rosalyn she was called was a friend of mine, twas the day she drew her first weeks wage from Ewbank. Still call round her grave occasionally. She lived up in the village, Her mum n dad used to have the chippy just above Melbourne St in Accy, when she was a baby.It was mid 60s actually, as i left school 63 n Ros was a few years younger than me, Was also Friday 13th, so have always had a thing about that date since.

Great to see all those familiar names, lets have a school reunion.

taddy 07-04-2014 20:29

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I don't know about her mum and dad having a chippy but I can remember the dad Tommy, son Russel and daughters Janet and Rosalyn living on Townley Avenue for many years, Tommy was a wagon driver, (for Tarmac I think).

As for Rosalyn, I was one of the first people on the scene when she was shot, the image has stayed in my mind to this day.

Russel served as a drummer in the army and married a Maltese lass, after his army service they settled in Malta, still live there I believe.

I also knew the lads involved at least 2 of em are gone now.

The chippy that Cashy refers to was called Joe's when I was a lad in the early 50s. Further up above Washington St was Eglin's, which is still a chippy. A girl in my class at St John's called Ann Byrom came to that chippy after Eglin's. I haven't seen her1952. Maybe she is avoiding me.

Hi, I found a google search item under the name of Jason Swindlehurst, he was the son of Russell and nephew of Janet who I mentioned on an earlier post.

He and a mate of his whom I think was called Martin Cresswell were kidnapped and executed in Iraq, the post also shows his dad Russel in Malta.

The poor chap has not only lost his son but also his younger sister in tragic circumstances, I can but offer my deepest condolences.

Hi Barry,

Good to hear from you. Long-long-time-ago.

I recall we were in the the same class at Woodnook (or at least the same year). You may remember me.... Ken Nash.

I remember most of the other people in our class as listed by others in an earlier replies: Peter Ollet, Barry Oliver, Gillian Coulson, Trevor Wearing Martin Whittaker, Briget Swales and Ray Biscombe. Few other names: Phil Rose, John Beswick, Linda Peters, Ann Jackson. John Jackson, Madelina Quipp, Sheila Parkinson Ronald Bury.

This is my first time on this website and not sure who will see this. Hope that you are well and hope to get a response.

Ken

Although a couple of years younger than me, I too remember a lot of those names, seven of them were from Huncoat. Ronnie Bury and I used to go ratting at Childers Green Farm 45/50 years ago.

I remember you Ken Nash. Didn't you live up Spencer st.....seem to remember we were in the football team along with Pip Rose and Geoff Redmand. I also remember all those names plus Shirley Costley, Julie Harris, Trevor Wright.
p.s. I seem to recall we used to have a kick about up Arden Hall playing fields

Steve: Bang on with Spencer Street, Phil and Geoff, the football team and Arden Hall. Remeber Shirley as my partner in country dancing when when the football/netball afternoons was rained out. Trevor rings a bell.
Did you live close by Spencer Street?

Taddy: You may well have the best memory. Maybe Clive was boss of the prefects. I think I remember him as one of the lads that stood at the door and stopped us going into the school before the bell.

Hi Kenn, I lived in Oswald st (bottom end). Other names who lived round there....David and Andrew Trotter (Spencer st or Hodder st )...David Smith (lived a few doors down from Gillian Coulson and Sheila Parkinson on Bold st)....Kevin Procter and Terry Butterworth (Cedar st). Your ex dance partner Shirley Costley now lives in Arizona.
Nice to make contact with you after nearly 50years!!!!!! the old brain cells are going into overdrive

Hi Taddy, I too am struggling to remember head boy/girl. If there was I would think Madeline Quinn would have been a candidate, I seem to remember she was very posh and snooty. I remember all of the names from Kenn post, I was in the same class as most of them......Mr Wade was the form teacher

taddy 03-05-2014 18:31

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I remember Mr Wade very well, he used to have a piece of vee belting that he used for corporal punishment; known to all the lads as his Percy Wader. :):):)

Clive Smith was a prefect, but we did not,(to my recollection anyway)at that time have a head boy or a head girl.

My wife took a photograph of the 1961/62 Woodnook football team into the Accy Observer over three weeks ago, still waiting for it to be shown in the paper, yet they are always asking the readers to send in their old pictures; If they don't print it in the next couple of weeks I might give them a bell and chase them up a bit.

Steve: Got it almost 100%. I recall us walking home from school and you being on the school football team . I turned up a photo of the team taken in the school yard dated 1962-1963 (as written on the ball): Back row teacher Gale (heavy set man) and teacher Bell. Second row a couple of lads I can't name then Rose, Parker (big lad), Duffy (goals), Beswick; front row Mills, Jackson, Biscombe, me, Redman, Southern? Kirkham. You must have been away that day

kenn 03-05-2014 19:09

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I remember Mr Wade was teaching the boys about the birds and bees and that 1961 was the only year we would ever see that was the same if turned up-side down.

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I had a look around the museum the other day and saw the football team photo.....didn't recognize anyone, that was my first year at Woodnook. There was another photo witch had Mr Carrol (headmaster) Roland ?...Barry Oliver...Philip Rose...Bridget Swales, along with others who's names or faces I don't remember. I'm presuming they were all prize winners or some kind of merit, as they seem to have been hand picked from different classes

steve50brown 03-05-2014 19:28

Re: Woodnook Secondary

Hi Kenn....would love to see that photo, if youv'e still got it. Mr Bell (ding dong)was the gym teacher and Mr Gale took science.....he had the classroom with the long desks with bunson burners on them......always smelt of gas and rubber. He moved to a school down Birmingham way and in my last year there the football teams got invited to play against his school. after the match we all went to watch W.B.A. play some other team, for free

Re: Woodnook Secondary

Mr Allen was headmaster when I was there....his nickname was 'holy Joe'.I remember Mrs Thompson.....she taught RE. Mrs Ashcroft taught music, Mr Gale was my form teacher in the second year.Mrs Rawnsley taught geography. Mrs Whittaker was PE (she was married to Jim Bowen).
Miss France taught Art. Mrs Shaw taught needlework.....and that is my memory exhausted.

kenn 04-05-2014 01:08

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I remember most of the teachers mentioned. Also Judith Catlow (single at the time) Souther (red beard). Headmasters: Allen then Carroll then Hindle (older bloke and former math teacher).

Margaret Pilkington 04-05-2014 10:00

Re: Woodnook Secondary

I remember Miss Catlow, but not what she taught. Milton Suthers was responsible for teaching me Maths....except he scared the bejesus out of me.....so I learned very little.
He played Cricket in the Ribblesdale league......I am not a bit interested in Cricket so why I remembered that is a mystery to me!

Your memory serves you very well Margaret, the only ones I remember on that list Are Mr Allen and Mr Gale, although others were Milton Suthers, (maths), and Norman Booth,(woodwork), thinking back they must both have been good teachers, I can still bring to mind what they managed to instill into the brain of a miners son who was not really interested. Maybe if I had taken a little more notice I could have had an Ology.

Hi Kenn, thanks for posting the football team photo. No idea where I was that day. I'm afraid the old grey matter has let me down in naming the other two in the photo. I remember we played our home games on King George's playing fields at the top of Royds st.Mr Gale looked an imposing figure, but I think his bark was worse than his bite. I was at the school between 1954 and 1958. Looking at some of the remarks, made me think at who was who when I was there!
-Frank Garnet was the head (an awful person very brutal, once caned all the boys of our class because one of us whistled when a certain girl came into the classroom).
-Mr. Allen replaced Garnet during my last year. We helped Mr. Allan decorate his new house at Harwood bar.
-Mr Gale came (I think) as replacement for Milton Suthers, this during my 3rd year.
-Our woodwork teacher was Mr. Rydings.

Cheers

Makes good reading all this stuff about Woodnook...No, I did not remember your times in and around Woodnook, since I was born in 1939, so my school years started in 1943 and in Leyland...But however, at the age of about 10 / 11 in 1950, a school holiday trip to Plympton (Plymouth) involved meeting a school trip from, you guessed it Woodnook...Accrington.... Pity I do not remember any names from this delightful time...Take Care .......Tony

I am looking to trace Clive Smith.
Clive went to Woodnook School between the years of 1958-1962.
From my memory(which is getting a bit fuzzy for that era) he was a sporty boy.
When he left school I did not have contact with him at all....but I heard that he went into the Royal Marines.
If you know of him, or can supply any information at all.....I would be very grateful.
This information would help someone who is not in the best of health and would like to get in touch with Clive.

This request is also posted in the 'lost friends and family section'.....thanks to the mod who moved it.....much appreciated.

Hi Barry, I was there too during those years, but I can not remember an awful lot. My name was Kathleen Nuttall I had very red hair. I would love it if any one could promt my memory of those times.
