Just consulted with my (sorry, folks) Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary.

illegitimate, adj., 1: not recognized as lawful offspring: specif. born of parents not married to each other (emphasis added)

Even an dictionary of American English clearly shows that a child born out of wedlock is illegitimate. Blackburn Raver, you are free to disagree, but a few of us have provided authoritative documentation to support our position. Suggest that you may wish to do the same.

I'll happily forego the use of "bastard," as it carries a lot of additional pejorative connotations.

Happily for society as a whole and civilisation in general, you are in a fairly small minority there.

The fact remains that, like it or not, any child born to an unmarried mother is illegitimate in the eyes of the law and thus a bastard. There are some who have revelled in the apellation; William the Conqueror was commonly referred to as William the Bastard and later in the fifteenth century one of the illegitimate sons of the French king (I forget which one) rejoiced in the ludicrous title of The Grand Bastard of Burgundy.

Indeed, I have even been known to refer to myself as "Bastard, by name and by nature!"

It may be true to say that an infant has no influence over the marital status of its parents and thus cannot be blamed for the circumstances of its birth. On the other hand there are some schools of thought which would argue the opposite, insisting that the soul actively chooses the life that it is to be born into.

Generally speaking though the use of the terms "Bastard" and "Illegitimate" have been applied to such children for thousands of years without anyone thinking to change them for something nicer. If the words carry a negative or perjorative connotation then that is the result of such words being used to convey a meaning which is different to that which was originally the case. If you find offence in such words then may I respectfully suggest that the offence lies not in the word but in your own ear.

bastard dosnt mean fatherless it means born out of wedlock

my kids are bastards coz i wasnt married when hey were born

been born out of wedlock used to be a shamefull thing so calling somone a bastard was an insult

these days most people are born out of wedlock so theres no shame attatched to it any more

Apparently, you are not only foul-mouthed, but you fail to read and comprehend. I cited authorities, and I decidely did not call anyone a bastard. In fact, I cited reasons why I choose to refrain from using that term. Instead, you reply with a foul stream of coarse invective that says a whole lot about your own lack of character.

One can only hope that the administrators see fit to deal with you as you so richly deserve. :s_fmad:
