Mongolian Restaurant
I see there's a Mongolian Restaurant opened up at West End Ossy, has anyone been?
Anyone been to a Mongoloian Restaurant? I have just looked on the net and found a few menu's and it seems interesting, a bit different! seems like everything is served like a BBQ (comes from the tribesmen cooking on upturned shields) I thing you go to the food counter, make your meal up and pass it to the chef and he cooks it for you. Check these out here (excuse the music!) and here |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
There's a place in Brighton called Genghis Khan's. We go there for meals when we can afford it. Basically it's how KSH described it - you choose your meat or fish, then the pasta/rice, then vegetables and spices and all sorts of other things, put in the stock then take it to the chefs who cook it for you.
If you don't like the concoction, you can bin it and start again. I would recommend the one in Brighton, but seeing as its about 300 miles from most of you, I would give the new one a go! |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
I've been looking at a few places on the net, I will have to give this place a try. I have eaten at most nationality's so no harm in giving this a try. Some say you pay a set price and are allowed 3 visits to the BBQ others tend to be itemised prices. The one in Edinburgh seems Ok with its zebra yak and kangaroo :-)

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
we have had a flyer posted on the car windscreen for the mongolian restaurant whilst we were down on whitebirk estate the other week and both me and the other half would give it a go as we thought it was interesting
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Popped in to have a look last week. Looks really nice and it is as Vorlon says, pick the food then chef cooks it. Not a bad price either £11.95 for two courses. Shall have to give it a try.

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
I have eaten Kangaroo and Emu in Oz......neither were to my taste.
The Kangaroo has to be really rare or it is tough as boots......the bit that I was served could have been started again with a good vet and an electric probe.......No, not for me. Hubby tried Crocodile and said it was just like chicken....well, it would be because that is all they get fed on. |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Where abouts is it?

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
The one in Brighton charges a set price and you can eat as much as you like.
Good if you have a healthy appetite!!! |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
It's where the Red Rose painters and decorators shop used to be on Blackburn Road, West End. Just up from the Hare and Hounds pub.

Good grief, when I was growing up in West End the most exotic food shop was the chippy. :p
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
If they are as good as the ones I have used abroad then give it a go, brill spices and lovely tender meat. If its a real Mongolian it will have a big cooking table in the center and the Chef keeps flipping and turning your meal then picks it up with a sweeping motion and puts it in your bowl. :)

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
I'd def be up for it, but someone better gag staggers so he can't pre-warn them about how well behaved we all are!!!
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
I will certainly be giving this a try. I went to a Mongolian restaurant a few years ago in the Covent Garden area of London. It was all you could eat for £10. The cooks are really skilled at getting your food from the shield to the bowl in one fluid motion with no spills. The price meant that you could try lots of different meats and fish and the choice was superb. Drinks were expensive but because the meal was so cheap they have to make their money somehow. I will be giving our local one a whirl...:D

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
One wanders if the phrase "going for a mongo" will enter into the Accy/Ossy lexicon.

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Go on Steph, Give it a plug! You never know all us Accywebbers may decide to use your shop instead of our normal one!

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Well I had a look there tonight.
We hadn't booked and the place was booked up but I managed to sweet talk the waitress into letting us in!! No Zebra or Kangaroo on the menu but plenty of Pork, Beef, Lamb or Chicken. Its £11.95 a head, £1.80 for a portion of boiled rice. You get a free starter in with the price. Its just like Chinese and Thai food really, all the same sauces and cooked in woks. here's what you do at the one at Ossy as there not too good at telling you Get to your table and they will bring your starter and any drink you ordered For the main meal you go to the counter, you get a divided dish, you place the meat in one side and all your veg in the other, you can have Mushrooms, brocolli, sweetcorn.button mushrooms, salad, cucumber, spring onion, carrot, beansprouts, peas there's probably a few more that I have missed. There is a list of sauces on the board 1 - 20 i think, you write your table number down on a peice of paper then select a clothes peg with the sauce number on. Hand all these to the chef to cook, you can watch him cook it if you like. It will then be brought to your table. You can go back as many times as you like, I went twice, had king po sauce 1st time then red thai chilli 2nd. Cost us £36 for 2 with drinks Beware though, it gets really hot in there, I couldn't get out the door quick enough as it was that warm Place is open Tue to Sun 12:00 - 14:00 and 18:00 - 11:30 You have to book, phone No's are 01254 396777 01254 38555 Text them on 07961 436179 |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
What is the restaurant called?
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
It sounds really good and a bargain for the price. I don't think they'll make money on the night me and my husband go as 'all you can eat' is his favourite type of food.
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Do they have a kids menu? One really fussy daughter to cater for.

I too went last night K.S.H must have gone later then you. We'd booked for 10pm. I was disapointed that you don't get a choice of starter, and also that the price of £11.95 per head doesn't include rice. Thought £1.80 per portion of rice was a bit steep. |

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
My new "acquaintance" [that's where I've been for the last week....] went to the Restaurant last week;he enjoyed it and said it was heavily Chinese influenced. He liked the fact that you could go back for more but was disappointed to see no Yak on the menu  .
|
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Do they serve a cup of very strong black tea with rancid butter stirred into it? I understand this is the true Mongolian beverage.
I think I will have to make a visit "home" to West End to try this. I've eaten a wide variety of cuisine, in various parts of the world. Fillipino, in Saudi Arabia, was interesting. I had a fish that was something like a kipper but far more delicious, and number 21 on the menu was - well, the waiter said "English don't like this", we assumed it was dog - but I've never had Mongolian. Mind you, I won't be happy unless the chef is wearing a furry hat and a sheepskin "weskit" and comes in riding a small shaggy horse. :p |
Re: Mongolian Restaurant
I finally had chance to go to this restaurant the other week. Can confirm it is very good. Went back to the counter three times. That's probably why I'm not 'stick thin'.

Re: Mongolian Restaurant
Went last night, I like chinese etc but always feel there is never enough meat :D anyway it was £12.95 but that included a starter which was a very tasty soup, then you just helped yourself to four meats chicken, lamb, beef, pork and a range of veg, mushrooms, bean sprouts, peppers etc and then just decided which sauce to put with it all out of a choice of 20 ! Give your bowl to the chef and sit down and wait a few minutes.
Excellent food and the lady Lucy was very friendly and helpful we even booked by txt !! Cost £40 with us both having two main meals, starter, rice, two drinks each and a couple of coffees. I'll see you there again soon. Happy New Year :) |
