Pompeii

Just watched a programme (why does everybody spell this in tech talk program now ?). Why am I so fascinated by this terrible tragedy ?? I will, myself, be there in 6 weeks time and really excited about the visit.
I don't think I am particularly a sadistic voyeur, felt I could lie beside the casts of the dead and put my arms around them for comfort. My justification is that it is a blast from the past seeing how our people lived 2,000 years ago.

Problem is they ended by saying, that this eruption is known to happen every 2,000 years and is now due !! Not sure if I should do the Vesuvius trip.:fire:

Another BBC Panic Programme and another repeat! Anyone remember the Yellowstone Park Super Volcano and the one about the Canary Islands sliding into the Atlantic and engulfing the US in a massive tidal wave?

While it is probably reasonable to assume that Vesuvius will erupt again in the near future, it is by no means reasonable to assume that it is just around the corner, nor that it would be as catastrophic as the eruption which buried Pompei and Herculaneum. In any case, the volcano is so closely monitored that there would be weeks, if not months, of warning signs should it stir into life again. I wouldn't worry, enjoy your holiday and take lots of pics to share with those of us who have to stay behind in dear old blighty.

Go and have a fabulous time. It's an amazing place - I went once and it did spook me a bit but it's quite an experience.

Thanks A-B .. feel lot better now .. couldn't have backed out anyway .. paid for ya' see :) Yes, do remember the other programmes, scares you for it little while as always a possibility ... look at the world disasters we have had recently. We had the technology to monitor these recent ones, but due to lack of funds, was never installed. Tsunami in particular. Find that sad. How can we ever get the world to work together as a team.

i hope you have a lovely time in pompeii kate, i love to visit places were you can feel our historical past, oddly enough, i know what you mean about feeling the comfort of the casts, its like it will take you back in time. i felt the same when i visited the coluseum in rome i felt terrible anxiety for the lost souls there, but iwouldn't have missed it for anything..:)
