Grown-up offspring
 

A subject came up recently in my local paper ........what is the collective noun for grown-up children ? I'm in my 50's and my "offspring" are grown-up and in their 30's, it's easy to refer to them individually either by name or as my son or my daughter, but if I'm talking about them as a group ......calling them "the kids" no longer seems an appropriate way of referring to them and they haven't been Children for years. How do folks in their 70's and 80's refer collectivly to their offspring ?

I'm only in my early 60s but I have 2 children in their 40s and one aged 30. I refer to them as my family but I still find myself saying "When the children were young" etc. They will always be my children, even when they're wrinkly.

I asume the way things are it would be "future carers" or something close. :eek:

well i want all my 4 to adapt and prepare their homes for my old age,haha.....but i think i will always refer to them as my kids,

I can see the problem you have steeljack but as a father to 6 girls, it is simple to refer to them as "my girls." This overcomes ageism.

The eldest would have now been 30 had it not been for a fatal accident, but the other 5 have voiced no detrimental remarks over being called "my girls!:p "

Thats the secret, keep to one sex!:D

i find the phrase " pain in the arse " covers all ages and sex's of children :)

They are still my children, even though one is nearly 40 and the other nearly 30. Perhaps they should refer to me as "my future nursing home bill"?

The Oxford Dictionary does give the meaning as: one's sons or daughters (at any age) .. so good enough for that, good enough for me.

Do like the sound of the other description though : a descendant.

"Mmmmm, how many descendants do you have, Mrs Katex?" Sorta' got a ring to it, don't you agree ? :D

My children are all grown up and have children of my own but I still say " The Kids are coming."
If referring to them individually then It's my lad or Daughter and occasionally I sill re fare to MUMMIBOO has my baby Girl.
After all a Mothers roll is to embarrass her Children.
They will always be my Children even when they are old an wrinkly.

I hate the use of the word,"Kids". It soiunds like a herd of young goats.

Why not refer to them as my son(s) and daughter(s) ?
