A Tax On Your Dustbin?
According to stories in the Daily Mail and Daily Express, local authorities are secretly fitting bins with microchips. Bins will be weighed on collection and households charged according to the amount of waste generated. Apparently, there is an EU law mandating a reduction in landfill waste. If true, I can see the law of unintended consequences coming into play here, with people disposing of rubbish in other places.
Has Hyndburn chipped your bins yet? |
Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
Yep, ours 'had' a chip ;)
If they introduce weighing of rubbish then it will become a free for all with people dumping bags in other peoples bins at the last minute. |
Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
if the council start getting on my case about rubbish it will be bomfire night every 2 weeks , i would rather burn it than sort it out into different tubs etc
anyway theres always fly tipping which i can see becoming more of a problem if councils dont stop geting more and more petty about rubbish |

Roy started a thread about the chipped bins in Hyndburn. http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ews-24405.html |
Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
According to Peter Britcliffe on the radio the other day Hyndburn will not be charging for waste.
I asked him this question last Thursday while having a meeting with him regarding Rhyddings Park. He said that HBC was against charging for rubbish as they think it would only encourage fly tipping. He even mentioned a thread on here about it :D |
Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
so what happens then..?
cos nearly everytime I have put my bin out someone else dumps their rubbish in it... so that means I will be paying for someone elses rubbish ??..I would rather give my wheelie bin back and bag my rubbish and go to the tip in the car...and there is no law stating that every house hold must have a wheelie bin... |

Hyndburn will not be charging for rubbish as they think it will cause more fly tipping. Yes the bins are chipped but they will not be used for charging for waste. It would never work anyway. Like you said someone is putting there rubbish in your bin, that could never be stopped so charging will not work. Like I said to Peter Britcliffe, I could go round putting bricks in peoples bins I did not like so they would get charged more. Its a silly idea jumped on by the media that is totally unworkable. |
Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
It would be ok for the people who lived on their own or couples who didnt make that much rubbish but what about the ones who have kids and so from that a lot of rubbish. If they did start charging for rubbish then they would have to lower the council charge wouldnt they? Can you imagine if they tried to charge you for the rubbish and didnt lower the council tax - would be riots in hyndburn and anywhere else they brought it in. Makes sense not to charge - that way everyone is on a flat rate and pays the same.

Re: A Tax On Your Dustbin?
It is not really possible to charge for rubbish. I would just put my rubbish in your bin and you would get charged not me. How do you think they could prevent that? They can't really can they?

I wouldn't go pulling those chips out. They can charge you to replace it, and if you refuse you could get a fine. At the end of the day it's not your bin, it's there's and you have a responsibility while its in your care. Our councils moto is govern yet obey. ye right. |
