sell by date ?

 how many of you stick religiously to the sell by date on food stuffs:
I just went to make a brew and noticed the milk was out of date by one day:
Even thought it smelt ok , and tasted ok: I did not enjoy my brew psychological I guess or is it?

Oh God no! If it smells ok and hasn't got green stuff growing on it, it goes in my belly :) mtheads always pulling me up for it

mthead: Don't eat that it's 3 week out of date
me: smells ok
mthead: It'll make you ill
me: Ah it'll be right! :)

...... and I'm still here :D

Re: sell by date ?

I have the opposite sometimes - a thing may not actually be past its sell by date but if it looks a bit dodgy then I won't eat it.

Some things if they have gone over by a day and look fine then I will. After all how far into the 24 hours does it become inedible? Does it change on the stroke of midnight?

Re: sell by date ?

Depends on what it is and how much out of date it is!!!

Re: sell by date ?

I thought the sell by date was only a guideline for the shops so they take it off the shelf ..... or knock it out cheap, as is the case with one of our local shops

Re: sell by date ?

I'm terribly fussy and throw things away, I have used milk that smells ok too and not enjoyed my brew, I know things dont expire on the stroke of midnight, definatelt psychological.

I always dive to the back of the goods in the supermarket, for the latest sell by date, but i am well known by my family for using things out of date...I have loads of things i bought for xmas yet,,,mince pies etc,,,i certainly wont throw them away...Also i buy things that have been reduced ,you can get some real bargains...

Re: sell by date ?

I'm with tinks on this one. If it smells/tastes alright i'll slog into it. Heck even bread with mold on it will I consume. If it's really bad, I just go ahead and toast it.

The rest of the family is quite particular in this regard.

Re: sell by date ?

I always ignore the sell by dates, and just use the sniff and poke test, and I'm the picture of good health.;)

Re: sell by date ?

Mick doesn't care how out of date something is so long has it smells and tastes ok.
Me I'm funny about these things, same has Grego if i know somethings out of date then if I do eat/drink it then I don't enjoy it.
But then again when it comes to food I'm a funny so and so.

Sell by dates don't much matter to yours truly, I sniff at myself every morning an hope i'm not passed my 'use by' date.

Re: sell by date ?

I won't even eat stilton till its a week out of date, it just gets better and better.

I am fussy with some things but completely the opposite with others.
