Should older women have long hair .....

..... and at what point are you an older woman?

Debating whether keeping my longish hair is trying to hold on to my youth and whether I should go all sensible.

Any thoughts?

Well, I had my long locks shorn off at the age of 40......my daughter said that I would look better with shorter hair......I had a little bit of grey coming through too. I didn't regret having my hair cut, and people told me it made me look younger.

I think you have to go with your gut feeling.

I now wear mine in a sleek (on a good day) short bob.

im 35 and have long hair!!, and its not grey either:p
but i reckon women with long straightened hair trying to look 20 again i mean with a young haircut, when they are 40/50 looks silly, also if its grey that just horrid:( when i get grey and have to dye it every other week cuz the grey keeps coming through then i will chop it off! but at the moment theres nowt wrong with mine!;)

I've been going grey since i was 20 thats why its been dyed every 4-6 months since. I've never had long hair always had it cut short purdy cut when i was at junior school, high school a bob and now whatever the hairdresser does with it.

Why dont you ask your hairdresser they normally will tell you what to do mine does!! :D

It all depends on how you feel Gayle, although very long hair on older women 50's 60's sometimes looks odd I think if its cut well and maintained shoulder length or whatever is fine. I'm 36 and keep my hair shoulder length dont think I'd ever go shorter.

Sometimes it is a medical neccessity - like when the old age osteo arthritis in the neck means that the extra weight of hair increases pain - sigh :(

A good hairstyle will always look good regardless of age. Length shouldnt matter if its done properly.

Well Gayle, all the fashion advice is to go shorter as you get older .. at least never below the shoulder length, and for most women, this is sooooo true.

Think somewhere there are some Internet sites whereby you can put in your piccie and add different hairstyles ... or is this just a service certain hairdressers offer ?

Good thing is ... can give it a go, after all not terminal, will grow again.

Big question is ... what does the man in your life think ? Ok, probably loves you whatever hairstyle you sport (they lie) ... but answering to the world here, so probably best to ignore him ... think you will suit it actually.

It doesn't matter how old you are as long as the style suits your face and you like it. I have quite short, layered hair, not because I'm over 60 and not because my hair is grey (and has been since I was 30) but because the style suits me. A friend of mine has long hair, also grey, and wears it in a very elegant chignon. I suits her.

Over the years I've had many hairstyles, from shoulder length to half an inch all over, alternately dyed it and left it to Nature. About 25 years ago I had a very curly perm, fairly short, and I wear glasses - large frames were the fashion at the time. I was walking through the market one day when a trader looked at me and said, "Marjorie Proops"! I was furious (I'm better looking than she was - honestly - she wasn't a pretty woman) but I got rid of the perm.

If you're comfortable with your look, keep it. If you fancy a change, go ahead. After all, if you don't like it shorter it will grow again

When my hair was long.....which was all my life up to being 40...my hubby wanted me to have it cut short......now it is short, he keeps saying he would like me to grow it back long again.....but to be honest it doesn't suit me anymore. I'm happier with it as it is now.

Depends on your hair face shape etc best advice is to research before u jump into it, i had mine cut diana style as wanted an easier style for me while being a new mum at the time, hairdresser convinced me to go for it saying i'd suit it & with my hair being fine would be much easier - oh how wrong was she:( thank god hair grows, it didnt suit me my hair was not thick enough to take a short style - nitemare besides i looked like a boy too nahh yak, never again no matter how old i get!

I think its personal choice & you will never know till u try, but i dont think long hair is just for young people, like someone said as long as its cut well & looked after what does it matter, my family friend had hers cut shorter as shes suffering with MS & is struggling to look after long locks - but she definately suits it shorter:D Again think it come to face shape, i have a long face shape so short styles exagerate that more where as oval & heart shape heads suit shorter styles.

I had my hair quite short when it was thicker and it was possible to style it but during an illness about 13 years ago it lost a lot of thickness and just looks like nothing if it's short so I grew it again and I'm actually much happier with it if it's long enough to fasten up. I don't care what anyone thinks about age. It's my hair and I'll do what I like with it. Just do your own thing Gayle.

I think a mature lady should dress her hair in a manner that is most becoming to her facial features and stature. Hair is like curtains are to a window, it frames and embellishes a woman’s beauty and displays dignity. I love to see long well groomed hair; I don’t mind short hair at all but dislike seeing tatty or unclean hair.
