Towneley Hall

erm when did they start charging an entry fee??

my dad went today with his mrs and they tried to charge them £3.50 each to get in.....unless he lived in Burnley, and if you live in Burnley its free entry

WTF??

Re: Towneley Hall

yep thats right flashy, went last year and found that out, i refused to pay , just cuz im not living in burnley, not the right sort of way to bring tourists is it?:(

flashy 07-05-2007 19:26

Re: Towneley Hall

thats exactly what my dad said to the woman who tried to charge him.....its pathetic, it was free when i went last year, cant even get on the website....this is all i can see

Towneley Hall is open from 12-5pm Saturday to Thursday, closed Fridays and is free to Burnley residents. The park is open until dusk everyday.

flashy 07-05-2007 19:33

they ask you for your postcode (well they did with my dad) so everyone be warned if your thinking about going

K.S.H 07-05-2007 19:35

Re: Towneley Hall

Seriously now, is this right, is it not discrimination? or have they just worded it right by saying "live", what if they said you must have been born in Burnley - that would start an all new ball game wouldn't it

It doesn't matter if they are free or not, but either way it should be the same for all in my opinion.
Whats the difference from that and me opening a shop in town and saying you must have been born in England to shop here - I'd be in court in a flash

From what I gather the residents of Burnley actually decided on it through a council questionnaire. They started charging in April 2006.

Should be all pay or no-one pays. People cant be treated according to where to something that others also visit. Would the cost being charged also included a percentage to cover those that live in Burnley so they can visit free? I would not entertain paying to enter a place if the locals had a privilidge over others. It seems like a milking of people. It has been mentioned that it isnt expensive but a family on a limited budget might not see it that way and they loose out.

Although it's not common I don't think it's unusual to have residents priveledge schemes. I think when I'm 65 I can go crown green bowling for free because I live in Hynburn but if I want to invite my Dad he would have to pay because he doesn't live here.

Families wouldn't lose out that much because admission is still free for children and students.

right dave, now tell me the truth....seen as you used to live in burnley, if you where visiting towneley hall would you give them your old address and postcode so you could get in for free?

I would imagine so, but I haven't been in Towneley Hall for at least 25 years and have no plans to go. :)

flashy 07-05-2007 21:38

lancsdave 07-05-2007 21:38

Actually I haven't lived in Burnley since I was 9 so I wouldn't have got in for free, even though I am from Burnley I lived in Pendle.

Re: Towneley Hall

My son went on Tuesday last week .he gave our old post code but told them in no uncertain terms what he thought about it,,, also he says half the stuff has gone ,
It seems that the hall was left by the Townleys to the people of Burnley to enjoy free of charge and the powers that be cant get out of that clause... So they are exploting visitors from out of town....Well it serves them right if it all back fires on them.....

flashy 07-05-2007 21:47

Re: Towneley Hall

i agree granny, its mad, when did the hall get left to the people of burnley anyway?

lancsdave 07-05-2007 21:51

Re: Towneley Hall

I believe in Blackburn there is a Beez card which is only available to residents but gives you discount on various activities.

Any resident of Blackpool can get a discount on admittance to The Grand Theater and Sandcastle.

They are not free admissions but they are benefits available to residents only.

And it probably will, last I heard they were 8,000 visitors down over the last year.

Re: Towneley Hall

like you say dave...a DISCOUNT

lancsdave 07-05-2007 22:00

Re: Towneley Hall

The hall was bought by Burnley council in 1901.

flashy 07-05-2007 22:05

Re: Towneley Hall

so did they get it left to them? and they only changed it recently why?

lancsdave 07-05-2007 22:12

Re: Towneley Hall

Apparently they bought it because the Towneley's failed to breed and the fringes of the family didn't want to keep it on.

Wasn't there a thing a couple of years ago where the government subsidised all musuems etc so they could be free admittance, and then they have since stopped the subsidy. I only vagueley recall it but I'm sure somebody with a better memory will tell us the full story.

Even so there has to be a way to be fair to all. I could understand if it was to maintain exhibits but if they have gone do they have an excuse?

Eric 07-05-2007 23:12

Re: Towneley Hall

Seems quite common to give residents a break. In Ontario residents pay next to nothing for fishing licences, but people from out of the Province pay quite a bit ... and from outside of Canada, they pay an arm and a leg. Same for hunting licences ... except for skunk, but you have to wrestle them into submission. I can vaguely remember Townley Hall, and $8 does seem a lot to pay. But I suppose there has to be some compensation for living in Burnley.

jedimaster 07-05-2007 23:15

Re: Towneley Hall

i hope i haven't joined this too late
but they brought in the charge last year to assist in paying for the upkeep of the building and to introduce new exhibits
this charge was introduced by the council who owns the hall and gardens and as such it was decided that burnley residents should get free admission as we already pay for this through our council tax

also many other councils around the country do the same for example in bath residents are entitled to free admission to the roman baths where visitors have to pay etc... so is not discriminatory but common sense

Why not engage your brain before putting your mouth into gear. Gawthorpe Hall belongs to the National Trust, not the borough of Burnley. If you join the National Trust you can gain free entry.
